Having stopped playing five string in practice for a few weeks recently I understand this better than I would have before. Having swapped a couple of times between the two I feel comfortable about both four and five strings, I really only need it to save from drop tuning or from modifying a four to take a drop tuner. I just like the extra string but I easily can do without. There is something almost organic about an instrument with an odd number of strings. I was the same with my 'bikes, favouring triples over twins or fours. As a relatively unaccomplished player I'd say swapping back and forth has made me feel less compelled to stick with just one instrument. I find I can swap basses with no inconvenience other than a short period of adjustment. It's helping me to learn what works across instruments and I like that because I can weed out little bad habits that I sometimes develop. Where one bass might forgive me that habit, the next one wont. I think it means I carry less baggage as a player so I am more about the music. One thing I would say is that a five isn't great for double thumbing because there is less space between strings generally.

Welcome Corto. An acronym that you should become familiar with is GAS. It's all very well claiming to be a one bass kinda chap but as new player I should warn you that GAS is a common affliction among bassists who have built a bit of a repertoire. Apart from that, your knowledge and use of our language is more than adequate.

I've had it for a short while with some sets of new strings. Are your strings played in yet?

MMs look big anyway. I can't see it as unbalanced because the scratchplate puts it in its place.

How do you satisfy PRS rules doing this?

It makes a lot more sense than letting the house jukebox fill the intervals. I like the idea.

It turned me on at age sixteen. I'm sorry I don't have the LP any more. It was purely because of the cover art that I made the purchase. It took me a while to realise that it was not an image of a spacecraft! I wore out my cassette copy too so the link above was a fortunate find. Even at that quality, it is better than my worn out copy. Toefunk is my favourite track out of the album but the whole thing is a trip. Have fun unscrambling the reverse speech bit.

Yeah, the books aren't always right. I have a publication from a respected house saying that the bassline for Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was overdubbed when clearly it's just a nice little run of double stops during two breaks. I suppose it's aimed at novices.

Good point. I think a five gives you a little more scope for transposition. After all, keys are usually chosen to suit the vocalist(s) and sometimes the horn section.
