BassChat Podcast Q+A (Question Submissions)
SpondonBassed replied to Akio Dāku's topic in General Discussion
You're in good company then. Even the pros have their moments of doubt. -
That should have read - massive malfunction.
-
Dunno mate but can you do any Quo?
-
With black hardware? Ebony.
-
I wondered about noise from that sort of kit. I larfed at the FB comment.
-
Wow. Thanks Dan. Nice neck. Not too intense. What's Instagram? Heeheehee. I suspect that instagram users will have some sort of root kit installed on their machines to allow access to their image store. I believe you can buy instruments that do that but they'd be associated with things like Rock School which is a games console application. I don't think it is available on "proper" instruments. I'd be happy to be corrected if that's wrong what with advances in tech and all.

I only get a large grey rectangle Dan, no image. Have you got another image source please?
-
My knowledge of clipping lights is limited but I'd have thought they were set up to warn you that you are about to reach the amp's limitations before they are audible. If you go on that principle then, as with VU metering, you'd aim to hit the light briefly but only at the loudest points in your performance. That said, you'd be okay with a touch of a glimmer on The One in each bar.

I think that's a great idea and not unlike one I have been mulling over for a while. PMd. I'm glad that you confirmed that was the case. I suspected that I might have problems with the intensity of neck mounted LEDs due to a couple of problems that are affecting my sight. I want to set some time aside to play with fibre optics to see if I can get that space cadet glow.

I haven't got a band, I don't know any guitarists and I'm not Welsh. Call me by my given name please.

'sup chap? Have you hit a snag? Perhaps we can discuss it on your build topic... -
The burning question is whether his hearing loss is on the same side as was The Ox 's back line... I wouldn't like to hear clipping at a gig. If your guitarist is as loud as you say, I'd probably leave.
-
I'm glad you cleared that up. You've arrived at the same conclusion that I did. When I asked a similar question here a while back, there was a strong suggestion that you could legitimately call two notes played together a chord. I was not alone in thinking that double stop was a more appropriate term. There were convincing arguments for both terms. The song was Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now. The middle eight in my copy of the tab (with score) was annotated with the word "overdub" where there were two notes played together throughout the section but I found it easy to play in one pass. I don't believe it was recorded with a single note line and an overdub to put the other notes in on top despite the book's assertion. I decided to go with double stop. I'd get a big head if folk managed to convince me that I was actually playing chords then I might be tempted to become a guitarist. (NOOOOOOOOOOOO!)

Yes. Me too. I don't see much value in having them facing the audience. I'd want the side markers for a sense of security should the lights go down.
-
It's nice enough. Did you mention finishes yet? It should look more deeply grained with a bit of oil or lacquer.
-
How thick is that binding and what wood? I suppose it conceals the end grain view of the laminations. Nice touch.

Then congratulations! Sunday and with this weather, you picked a good day for it. I looked on t'net and found this. I didn't realise you were such an old codger. -
Short Scale 'Thing' (23" scale Headless 4 string)

Crikey Jez. Your workmanship is blindingly good so far. If that's what you can do with just an MDF table, your next project is going to be magnificent! -

Is that regarded as being more or less PC than dwarf tossing? -

The forecast for tomorrow is that it's going to get seriously curvy with breakouts for pick-ups and controls. Be prepared for drifts of shavings accumulating in sheltered areas of the workspace. -

What I really like is the way that you don't leave the witness marks made by the forstner bit. Is it really Len's b'day or were you referring to the long awaited pick-ups arriving? -
Fireman - this could be the start of something.. umm..
SpondonBassed replied to Woodinblack's topic in Build Diaries
12 clamps? Amateur. As has been said before... you can never have too many clamps. Heeheehee. In seriousness though, 12 is a good place to start because you won't know if they are suitable for the purpose until you start using them in anger, as it were. Once the job is underway you might decide that more are needed but of different sizes to the dozen you already have. Never, ever, buy a whole toolkit brand new unless you want it as an ornament. Start with what you know you need right now and as you do more jobs add the right tools incrementally. That way you won't be troubled by lots of clutter with stuff you aren't going to use. -

I think you've answered the question already by saying they won't be the last. In my humble opinion; you have merely started building up a natural patina. Much better than making it look like a relic. If you like playing it, it will eventually become one anyway. Great photos. In daylight I can see how well the striking colour and the neck ornamentation work together. Don't leave us hanging though. It ain't done 'till it makes your trousers flap. -
3 Bolt Necks vs. The Rest of The World
SpondonBassed replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
I found that interesting too. Back in the day there might have been fewer DIY enthusiasts willing to risk damaging an expensive instrument though. If the work is done by a craftsman, it's not really a problem. Drilling out worn thread and plugging with dowel wood and adhesive appropriate to the neck will restore the parent wood so that a new and correctly sized hole can be bored and re-cut for the screw thread. As an aside; the question of whether screw or bolt is the appropriate term is an unnecessary distraction since you can have machine screws that have bolt like characteristics and bolts that have screw characteristics (such as a tapered thread). As long as it is the correct fastener for the application at hand, you can call it a doofer for all I care. As an engineer, it pleases me to see thread inserts used on modern builds. It might leave a sense of distaste in woodworkers who see woodwork and metalwork as being mutually exclusive but it is a solid engineering principle. I wouldn't criticise anyone for retrofitting thread inserts to a vintage neck and bolting it down if they aren't bothered about originality but they still want to be able to do frequent truss rod adjustments. -
Black. (I don't like Chrome plate) I was sorry to see the volute disappear. On reflection, it might have been a bit ambitious for your first neck through so I forgive you. Heeheehee.
