  1. Well said. Seldom have I seen such meticulously finished edges. I mean, anyone can sand a surface but how many can do so without spoiling their edges?
  2. If I have to have a headstock I like it not to be too long. I also like it angled back and with a volute. I only discovered this recently.
  3. I sometimes pick up my housemate's 3/4 sized spanish guitar and try to remember my chords. I don't like his steel strung acoustic but the spanish guitar is nylon strung and comfortable. You're right, it's not a bad thing to do at all. It always helps with the main instrument in some way like you say. The ukes are okay too as long as I don't go far from first position. But, bass is so much more suited to my fat fingers. It's like slipping back into a comfy jock strap after a couple of days of wearing a thong. (Probably should've just thought that too.)
  4. Thank you. Just remember that it was inspired by Andyjr1515's story of the durability and overall versatility of objects made from thin wood and of the occupational hazards encountered during live performance in Wolverhampton.
  5. One day, students of history will wonder how the great knob wars of the 21st century started...
  6. Going by that photo you should get enough of Frank's DNA out of sweaty deposits in the switch cover screw holes to make a new Zappa. Unless they are yellow sweaty deposits in which case you'd be barking up the Husky tree.
  7. It looks like Andy's got inserts that will work on split, splined or flattened spindles.
  8. Knob on! (As they say locally) With an oil finish they are going to be like little jewels against the Amboyna top. Would you accept a post as Basschat's full-time knob consultant?
  9. Ah. That's a shame because the proportions were interesting looking taken in isolation. You'd have to bear in mind that I own two paddle basses though.
  10. Hahahahaha! I think it's all because of that thickened upper-horn where most others taper off. You won't thank me for saying that I got the same vibe from your plans for the modified SR205.
  11. What was the issue with shape and size for your ex-Ibby? Neck dive, low mass, belly-rash? I regard my kit build as a test bed for ideas. Glad to meet someone of a similar mind.
  12. The example shown reminds me of a Ricky.
  13. You'll get no argument from me on that. I'm all for it if it prevents me from hocking up a gold watch inside my visor whilst singing my practice set onboard a CX500 that is cranked over at 45 degrees to the horizontal going 'round Wembley roundabout!
  14. Lots of players are finding the benefit of new materials and manufacturing techniques. Lots of players like myself benefit from the abundance of quality second (third, forth or even fifth) hands goods that go on the market when someone goes light. I have bought mostly second hand but my excuse is that I need the exercise. Try bench pressing a TE1818 for five reps and it'll give you an idea of what I expect it'd be like to gig with my rig. I am going to steal that idea of yours and put it into practice if I ever get busy on the circuit. I'm one of those who keeps coming back to flat eq settings after a bit of a play around. With my latest bass, the Ibby SR605, this happens more than ever. It's funny because I've got more control on board with the three band eq and its adjustable mid than on any other guitar I've had yet I want to use tone control less often.
  15. I didn't have any one in mind. I think it's good to cherry pick. Not all of them are qualified. It is likely that your age has a lot to do with your vocal stamina. You might be able to improve your situation with attention to diet and exercise. Get a routine medical check-up and ask the question while you're there. Even if it is just the inevitable march of time that is causing the 'build up' on your vocal chords the practitioner should have some tips on how to cope better with phlegm. From this: 'Excessive phlegm creation There are multiple factors that can contribute to an excess of phlegm in the throat or larynx. Vocal abuse: Vocal abuse is the misuse or overuse of the voice in an unhealthy fashion such as clearing the throat, yelling, screaming, talking loudly, or singing incorrectly. Clearing the throat: Clearing the throat removes or loosens phlegm but the vocal cords hit together causing inflammation and therefore more phlegm.[2] Yelling/screaming: Yelling and screaming both cause the vocal cords to hit against each other causing inflammation and phlegm.[3][4][5][6][7] Nodules: Excessive yelling, screaming, and incorrect singing as well as other vocal abusive habits can cause vocal nodules. See vocal fold nodule for more information on nodules.'
  16. Welcome Blaque. Full Range Flat Response eh? Nice.
  17. I could lose myself in that grain.
  18. You don't actually pay attention to YT commercials do you? I'd have thought the video clip itself would have calmed any anguish caused by marketing muppetry. I mean kittens, ducklings, ducklings-suckling-on-cat-nipples - none of these images could possibly cause offence. In fact I'm sure that North Koreans and Americans especially can see the benefits of sharing the love just from watching this video.
  19. Obvious question, I know but do you smoke or do you live with someone who smokes? What about vaping? I am not sure about the latter but I suspect it affects the voice in much the same way. Do you warm up or wind down your voice before and after performance? If not, try a few warm up and wind down exercises. There are lots of YT voice coaches to show you how. If it's none of those and it is a recurring thing with your voice I'd suspect an allergy may be at the back of it. I have allergic rhinitis and even though it's a problem with my nose, my throat can get a bit gluey sometimes too.
  20. It's not as easy as it looks but like you say, it's fascinating to learn what your own voice is capable of when guided by knowledgeable folk. The MD of Royce's male voice choir assessed me as being bass/baritone. She said that with practice I would tend more towards one or the other as I developed my lungs, breathing and delivery. You've got to be fitter than I realised too. I even took up swimming again to help. I am more baritone now. Years of smoking in the past has the effect of making my voice drop in air conditioned spaces so I can still get right down there on occasion. I don't attempt it for anything other than self amusement though. A word of warning however: If you are giving birth to any more tumble driers try not to deliver a Hotpoint. You'd run the risk of igniting one of your own cow farts and the resulting containment failure would take ages to clean up. Think of the environment, please. Hope the throat infection clears up soon.
  21. Sorry for being facetious about ferrules. They are underappreciated as it is. Have a complimentary link to a soothing image.
  22. When you put it like that, it assures me that you've got it sussed, as it were. I am thinking back to when I recessed the knobs on my kit so that the nuts holding the pots were concealed beneath the base of each knob. I felt this was necessary because of the curved body. There was an untidy look to the exposed nuts. I had thinned down the floor of the control chamber already and I then had to do little passes with a Dremel grindstone mounted from the inside so that the back of the grindstone did the work on the outside while the spindle was guided by the hole for the pot from the inside. Although I got away with it, the sound of thin timber just from running a finger tip across the front of the control chamber made me feel uneasy about exposure to knocks and bumps. I've been told that I worry too much before so thanks for sharing your experience. Ah Wolverhampton. Highly regarded as a cultural oasis of the Midlands with it's pubs and clubs. So that's how you discovered the lost chord... by t w a t t i n g a disillusioned yoof across the back of the nut wiv a dreadnought. Inventive.
  23. Do you consider reinforcing the thin timber behind the pups with a stiff adhesive foil or even a thin gauge piece of stainless steel in case an impact on the back might split it? Similarly with the control chamber?
  24. I like your decal. From what the other Andy (jr1515) says, your gloss finish will become more of a sheen over time. I think it looks great as it is. Is that because it has been cut back with the 0000 wire wool? I prefer less of a gloss finish myself. That's why I didn't do Tru Oil. The finishes I got using Danish (neck) and Teak (body) oils were a nice satin even after I buffed them with beeswax furniture polish a couple of weeks after the build was complete.
