Yup. I had a quote for seven hundred and fifty shopping trolley tokens from a 'friendly' accountant to sort out my mum's and my tax returns after they went pear shaped with the online service. As I was facing fines of more than a K from HMRC, it was almost an attractive proposition. I thought it was a lot of money for very little really as all he was going to do was make me fill out more forms than HMRC do! He had the barefaced cheek to tell me that he would use software to generate my return. My affairs are nowhere near complicated enough to need software to sort them out. I resented the notion of paying for his software licence fees so I told him I'd get back to him. I was not going to do all the filing then watch him sit back, hit 'Enter', then charge me hundreds of pounds for less than an hour's work on his part. When it came to, HMRC were very helpful and surprisingly understanding. I was able to have a face to face interview during which all the late returns were sorted and the fines refunded. I don't like their website though. Complicated and full of Beta pages every time I used it. I no longer do online returns. That bloke who used to claim on telly that 'Tax needn't be taxing' was a proper berk for saying so. I haven't earned enough to owe tax for over ten years now and it taxes the stuffing out of me just to tell HMRC that!

"20 Iconic Bass Guitars" - somefing wot I did...
SpondonBassed replied to Grassie's topic in General Discussion
That's grand! I agree with not labelling them individually but I reckon you could put a panel somewhere out of the way that identifies each bass for educational purposes. I'd consider buying one then. Maybe a panel with a flip up fly-sheet so that you can do a bass quiz with your mates to see who's the geekiest? It's great as it is though. Thanks for sharing. -

I have no idea what a gimp looks like. I've never felt the urge to pull his gas mask and rubber hoody off to have a look! -

'Tod' is the local (Derbyshire) pronunciation for t u r d. The word 'bird', similarly, comes out as 'bod'. This leave you looking like a true native of Derbyshire. It is also tending towards tautism to use 'shyte' and 'tod' together. Pleased to make your acquaintance duck. -

But that makes it sound like you are trying to impersonate Big Ben at one o'clock. -

There was already a thread for that. I think it is fine. I liked the 'pink torpedo' substitution for the phallus because it reminded me of Spinal Tap's ode to the girlfriend's big botty bits. It's fun to play with the filter whilst removing the vulgarity of swearing from the public parts of the forum. -

How Many Notes Does it Take to Make a Chord?
SpondonBassed replied to SpondonBassed's topic in General Discussion
That's where I was puzzled before I asked the question. I do a fair number of play-alongs where by making note choices I can modify the overall chord that is made between my bass and the accompanying track. Sometimes the results are subtle but there are instances when a semitone here or there can change the mood and direction of a piece dramatically. For an example; when doing repetitive endings to verses, I notice many good players vary their lines slightly and it helps identify which verse is ending It is especially effective if the mood variation suits the lyric, if you get me. In any case it makes a song more interesting to play. While I could adopt the term power chord for some of my double stops, I wouldn't call them chords because until they are played with accompaniment, the overall chord is not complete. I might be talking out of my botty but that's how it looks to me for the most part. -
Good idea. No sooner said than done...

How Many Notes Does it Take to Make a Chord?
SpondonBassed replied to SpondonBassed's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Jack. This is what it actually says; 'A chord, in music, is any harmonic set of pitches consisting of two or more (usually three or more) notes ' I am unusual enough so I'll go with the three note minimum. I'd feel I was bragging if I called my clumsy double stops chords. -
I bought a used bass the other day from a fellow member who had been interested in chordal work. He had the bass strung for E to C tuning. I revisited the idea of having a go at it again myself before I put a new set of B to G half rounds on it. I haven't changed my mind. I still think chords are the guitarist's job where there is one and keys if there is a keyboardist. The most I need is a double stop every now and again or maybe a triple stop at Christmas. My question is; Can you legitimately call a double stop a chord? My assumption is that three notes are the minimum you need to make it a true chord. I don't know where I got that idea from though.

I got kicked in the building once. I thought it was the unkindest kick of all! Sorry I missed it. It'll come 'round again though so I'll keep an eye out, cheers! Love the Stranglers.

Finished Pics! Piccolo turns nasty - Dark Side build Number Two

I am wanting to play with pole reversals and series/parallel combos to get my ear in on what it's all about. The HBs that came from Australia are unbranded but they put out a substantial output compared to others I know. They are ideal for this sort of hack. Now that I have the actual Ibanez that my kit was loosely based upon the Pit Bull is a test bed for me to play about with. It is interesting to hear your reasoning from a guitarist's point of view too. -
If it's going to be a cut and paste from someone else's website I'm out.

I'm quite interested in splitting the humbuckers on my Pit Bull. I'll enjoy the benefit of seeing how you get on first with a bit of luck. -

I'd have preferred LEDs myself if mother of pearl wasn't available and I don't normally like front facing LEDs. I think you made the better choice. -

I've been meaning to ask about the camphor laurel; does it have a particular odour on sanding? My mate had something called amazeeky (phonetic spelling) on one of his uke kits' tops which stank summat rotten. The smell of sanding dust was a bit like vomit! It was worth the unpleasantness because the red and green streaks that were a feature of the grain came out really well under a yacht varnish gloss coat. I'm hoping camphor laurel is a bit sweeter smelling. May I ask what material you do your swift inlays with please? My latest bass purchase has something called abalone for the fret markers. I've always liked a well presented inlay. It's something I might have a lickle go at for myself. -
Have you set a deadline for entries to the poll yet? I actually agree with you on the gasoline pump idea but I have one obvious reservation. We need more ideas folks.

I purchased a used Ibanez SR605 from Hector this week. I am happy to recommend anyone who is considering making a purchase from him to go ahead. He was helpful and forward thinking throughout. He dealt with my questions concisely. The bass arrived securely double bubble wrapped with a robustly taped up cardboard shell that was two layers thick! I've had the first play on it and am now looking forward to a proper practice now that I have my own choice of strings on. It's in very good condition throughout. Cheers H

@BigRedX That would not surprise me at all. -
I want to have the sort of wealth that makes it possible to buy a new bass every time I want a change of strings. They used to joke about the boy racers who changed their wagons every time the ash tray got full.
