A funny thing happened at rehearsal this morning...
SpondonBassed replied to fretmeister's topic in General Discussion
Just don't do a "jazz hands" opener and you might get away with it. On the other hand if you actually do want to embarrass your offspring... -
Bit more progress made. Totally changed my mind on the controls. Went stack knob after a lot of too'ing and fro'ing. Don't really know why either, other than I just think it will be the most adaptable setup for live work...
I've heard it said in this forum that stacked controls are more susceptible to hum than separate ones. I have no experience to confirm or deny this however. Is the cavity shielded?

Good to see you back up on this project Honza. Have you tried wetting it? -
From memory, this was the 3rd instrument I had as a kid ~ after a recorder and violin. I chose to do music GCSE as an option at school in the mid 1980's, and my parents got me this; A Yamaha Portasound PSS 270. FM synth with a fixed arpeggiator - "auto accompaniment" on the lower two octaves, and some use able patches (Bass, strings and brass). No midi. In the 90's, I traded it for a DX7 MK2 ~ frankly, the PSS 270 might actually have been better?!
I still have my Yamaha PSR21s. Two because Dad had one as well. Referencing the OP, there's nothing makeshift about them. Because they were released when MIDI was in the transition between advanced wizardry and industry standard, a lot of people by-passed them for fully digital keyboards with samplers and modules. The PSRs were very much a beginner's tool. I still jammed with mine on occasion. My other guilty pleasure is ownership of a Roland TR606. How I wish I'd sprung for the 808. Thanks for the memory jogger.

I heard yesterday on BBC 6music that the Beatles' Christmas messages to their fan club members is to be included in another package. I think there were six in total. The word "holiday" was used instead of Christmas on the recordings themselves. I think that shows how open-minded they or their marketing people were were for their time. I think the way they looked after their fans was good. Was that unique for the time? I mean, they used to post out flexi-discs. Were many bands doing that then?

Once again, a BC member goes the extra mile for the love of music. Good one NJ -
Oh wow! I did the same!! Mine was a kit from one of the electronics magazines. Not sure which, Elektor, Practical Electronics or Maplin. I tweaked an ‘FM Bug’ schematic to take the level of my bass and demonstrated it in my 4th year CDT classes.. Year 10 in new money. It’s was great, if you didn’t stray from the room!
I was a regular subscriber to Practical Wireless magazine as a teenager. I never built any of the projects though. Rural Ireland wasn't the best of places to source new components. Luckily, my aunt and uncle had a television and radio shop that did repairs. Their resident technician let me sit in the workshop and soak up whatever knowledge he cared to impart. At the back of the place was a mountain of discarded televisions and radios. I started collecting 10 inch speakers and making my own enclosures for them at home. Even then I was seeking that fullness in the bass range that was so lacking in domestic systems.

Hello from a Converted Guitarist... Please Be Gentle!
SpondonBassed replied to iain_psb's topic in Introductions
I suspect there's quite a few converted guitarists on here, I'm one for a start, no evidence for this but we usually give the game away by playing with a pick, could be a poll in there somewhere
Of course playing with a pole is best done from a distance... -
He's fine. The way he talks you'd have to take everything he says with a pinch of salt. That or you'd need to declare yourself incurably gullible. If he spoke with received pronunciation then he'd be dangerous. Heeheehee, like Valerie Singleton with a blunderbuss. I do agree though that it is worrying if people take what they see on YT seriously, your good self excepted.
...Those soaring octave runs are mighty impressive even all these years later. I had an acoustic guitar bought for £4 in the seventies because Dad insisted that I start on acoustic. He had already refused to buy the Woolworths electric guitar that I had coveted for ages that cost £20. I had almost convinced him to open his wallet in Woolies' but when I mentioned that an amplifier was required the wallet disappeared instantly. It wasn't the fact that the amp would be extra, it was the notion of listening to a complete noob practising but amplified. Wise decision Dad, I forgive you. The acoustic was painful to play. It was built for nylon strings but was sold to us with a set of steel cheesewires, or so they felt. I also had a Bert Weedon Play in a Day book. The book was a buzz-kill from the off. The tunes used for practice were alien and old and fusty. Because I had no way of knowing what the tunes were meant to sound like, it got ignored. I jammed with it in company but I didn't like it for its flat fretboard. I defretted it, sanded a curve onto the fretboard and refretted it. Naturally it never played well after. I passed it on to the younger brother of a friend when I left home. I later got pressed into playing a left-handed bass right-handed for a mate who lent me his brother's bass. I hacked along until I reckoned I might stick with this bass lark and bought a right-handed one for myself. Then I had to relearn all of the songs we'd worked on... I have no regrets. I think I got more enjoyment out of making do than I get from the instant gratification that is expected these days.

I received my copy on disc a couple of weeks ago. Like Hiram, the lyric I've got the keys to your horse is lodged in my mind. I liked it overall. It's not as exciting as I thought it might have been but these aren't young guns any more. It is age appropriate. Instead of explosive delivery it has a slow consistent burn that sits well with my fifty-something constitution. It has stamina. I will happily listen to this during supper and during the washing-up after.

Is there any really bad new gear out there?
SpondonBassed replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
Hard? Call that hard? We used to rehearse in t'paper bag in middle of road.....................
...AND... that bag would be one of Ringo's hand-me-downs after he had farted in it. -
I enjoyed the first post... thanks for that at least.

Sorry, I can't answer your question. I just found the topic title intriguing and wandered in by mistake.
Cheers chaps. When I play a hormonic, the left hand comes off on a quick controlled kinda way. Surely replacing a finger kills off riiiiiiiiiiiiiiing? Fairly dead?
No. As long as you put your finger tip precisely on the sweet spot for that harmonic, the note will continue to ring. You are damping the other frequencies by touching the string thereby isolating the harmonic note for that position. This will also give you an indication of how well the intonation of your bass has been set. If you are killing the harmonic at the fret I'd look at a saddle position adjustment to pull it into line.
Agree with Yorks in principle. In practice, you have no idea how effing boring, rather than purely offensive, menstruation jokes/puns are to women, no matter who they are told by (and that includes other women).
In fairness S, they're quite boring for a lot of men too. Schoolboys however regard them as sophisticated humour. I want to know why the shop known as PMT seems to be popular. What's the draw?
