I am another fan of cloth bound cable. It's got nothing to do with the sound though. I got some with my Sony headphones. The fabric seems to stiffen the cable against torsional loads and prevents kinking and small loops while allowing it to bend freely in larger radii. As it is a long cable this is useful. The output jack socket and a few screws were replaced with better components. I felt I got decent value for money. I would not expect any kit to go smoothly without some fitting work to bring it all together. The word [i]fitting[/i] in this instance implies minor woodwork and metalwork. After I had bought mine I discovered that there also is a UK supplier with what looks like a similar Ibby look-alike. I'd try that one next and save on the £60 odd import duty.

I wouldn't say you need to be extreme with it at the hot end of the cycle as the freezer gives you good temperature differential without risk of heat damage. The hair drier is perhaps not the best tool especially as it is makes a hot spot where it strikes. What may help is if you make a warm box to contain the body with insulation and an incandescent light bulb in it for the heat source. Give it lots of time, say 24 hours at each exposure to ensure full expansion of the body and the coating. Take sensible precautions as there will be a fire risk if you get it wrong. Similarly, make sure that the core of the body gets chilled fully when you freeze it. Avoid sudden transference from one extreme to the other else you will risk splitting the wood. Looking forward to the photos somewhere down the line.

By the way. I am also a radiogram hacker. I hated changing records on it because of the low cabinet and hinged door. I removed the turntable and made a plinth for it to sit on top of the unit. It was a simple thing to extend the wiring from the turntable and send it back into the cabinet through the grill at the back. I also made up external speaker cabinets for it and filled them with discarded 10 inch drivers from my aunt and uncle's scrap heap. I was 14 when I did that. I got my first half-decent turntable, a Pioneer PL12D, in my early twenties. That Alba radiogram smelt wonderful when it warmed up. That and the valve glow through the grill with the lights out are the [i]only[/i] things I miss about it.
