Bad to buy a 7 year old bass? Please advise.
SpondonBassed replied to noc's topic in General Discussion
Hi Guys, Found a bass i want to buy. I wont be able to try it before paying for it and it is a long way away to return. I will have a friend who happens to be visiting the sellers country (who knows nothing about bass or an instruments in fact) pick it up for me and fly it home. Its pretty expensive but i cant fly over and try it myself. Its also made by a Luther known for real good quality work. Visually, it looks totally perfect. Not a single scratch/mark/ anything. Now my question is this, what is the likelihood that a well made high quality instrument will be in bad shape after 7 years if it looks perfect on the outside? Im guessing the only thing that could be an issue are the electronics. Its got villex electronics. Yes, i know, never buy unless you can try but if you cant try... The seller assures me its perfect. Help me out here guys? What do you think?
"I wont be able to try it before paying for it" Buyer beware. No soothing words can mitigate this principle. -
That's exactly why I thought it had been missed.
Well. If no-one else will say it I will. Well done for spotting it Tim. [sup]10[/sup]/[sub]10[/sub] -
Thanks Andy. You can never see stuff of your own through fresh eyes. Yes, freehand. I printed a reduced image of the logo to copy from and pencilled it in, using leader lines, directly onto the brass. I followed up with the engraver using a tungsten carbide tip. I am capable of better but it's been a long time since I was able to do that sort of close work. I have vari-focals now and a bench lamp with a massive magnifier built in. Much easier. If I do any great amount of engraving down the line I must modify the engraver or get one that's comfortable to use. That knurled collar is cruelty itself when you're trying to keep a steady grip.
I bought Rosie Vela's Zazu, I think it was produced by Walter Becker IIRC. Haven't played it for years, better dig it out...
I'm having a bit of a Finbarr Saunders' moment with this statement. http://viz.co.uk/category/cartoons/strip-cartoons/finbarr-saunders/
With the right preperation I could be in the market for a barney.
Hey there. Have put up a bass for sale (Warwick Thumb) so figured Id say hey on the forum. Names Aidan. I play double and electric bass. Run my own band called duski (www.duskimusic.co.uk) as well as other touring bands including a jazz Indian fusion group called Khamira and A Neo soul band called Slowly Rolling Camera. I also play in an ELO tribute band. What happens next?
You have to wait until the prancing horses have had their nosebags I'm afraid. Until then, welcome to the forum. Respect to you for playing tribute to ELO.

Got mine now. Just over a week since my mate ordered it me from Amazon.

I wanted to put my mark on this and the supplied Pit Bull Guitars transfer was too big to go between the machine heads on the headstock. I decided to replace the truss adjustment cover with one of my own. I must practice more with my engraving. Still, this will be behind the strings so I'm happy enough. I had originally wanted to make the cover from a piece of "copper" sheet that was handy. When it came to, the sheet was actually brass flashed with copper and finished with lacquer. I was annealing the piece I had cut out with a blowtorch when I noticed. Seeing how it looked finished it was for the best. Copper would have been a bit gaudy in comparison to the polished brass. The brass compliments the frets already but I reckon it will look subtle yet blingy nuff when it's all strung.

I'm happy to enjoy music at my own level. I never wanted to do arrangements or write. The most I want out of it is to play bass and sing. My enjoyment stops as soon as I start looking at dots.

Welcome to the forum. You deserve instant credit for the nick name Basssters. I haven't seen that one before. Puts me in mind of making turkeys moist somehow. Not what I've usually got in mind whilst playing but why not I ask myself. It's all for a laugh anyway.

Fender precision bass noir 2017 bridge
SpondonBassed replied to eddie1984's topic in General Discussion
I hear about this modification and see some builders are incorporating string-through as a feature but I don't understand it fully not having first hand experience with any instrument strung that way. What do you notice most after you change to string-through anchorage? Is it meant to give you better sustain or is it more than that? -
Back on topic: fans of Donald Fagan might also be fans of Rosie Vela, whose 1986 album 'Zazu' sounds like 'The Nightfly' but with a female singer.
It would indeed. To each their own, but there are tried and trusted ways for us to learn. As with "ambient's" earlier comparison of learning music to reading a book. In order to learn how to do the latter we generally take a certain path. We start off with our ABC's, we get familiar with the sound the letters make. Most people remember at infant school, constantly saying out loud..."D-O-G" = dog....C-A-T= cat etc. We move on then to bigger words and then on to constructing sentences. We then start reading child's books, maybe with pictures to help us get the gist of what the written word says. Finally we move on to adult novels and literature etc. Do you see a certain path being followed here ? I certainly do. It is THE ..(there's that word again ).. learning path to reading and writing. One that I'm sure the vast majority of us have taken. Like the content of the book, music is also a language and has it's own learning path. So in this context I think the word "the" is valid. Granted, some people choose to join the musical path somewhere in the middle. They then often find themselves having to backtrack.....mostly this brings them back to ground zero...which is the most beneficial place to start.
Forgive me for saying but that sounds ever so condescending.

Welcome to the forum Steve. I think we might actually have an "It's all in the fingers" thread. Enjoy.

It's about time I got the wiring sorted. Now, what was all that fuss about lead-free soldering? I had no problems at all. Wired as per diagram except that I used wire colours differently from the diagram. The jack and pups will be soldered in situ when the body is fully finished. The humbucker pups have been supplied thus: an earth screen twisted with a green wire, a red wire twisted with a white one and a single black wire. The wiring diagram shows only an earth and a single signal wire from each pick up. I can understand that a humbucker, having two coils, might have four signal wires but these have four plus the braided strand. I don't know enough about this so I will go and read a few things before I decide. It might be that I could introduce a switch to separate the outputs of the humbuckers and allow individual or summed output in series or parallel. Not knowing if these pups are any good I'll probably play it safe and leave it at the four pot control configuration. Update: I have looked at lots and lots of humbucker diagrams and I can see how they are mostly supplied with the option of taking a coil tap from between the opposing coils. These pups are an unknown and I will install them as single units rather than muck about on my first build. Splitting the coils is a modification that could be done later if so desired.
...If a person wants to make progress along the learning path...
That would be THE learning path would it? Like there is only one. Sorry, I can't see it from your point of view.
