1.
Got asked for this for the first time after playing for over fifty years. Is this a new thing? Anybody else experience this? I declare all my band income on my tax return, but I don't want to get involved in other band members' tax affairs.
Who asked you for that? I'd be wary.
 2.
I see what you did there... Alas, flat-arse syndrome is very common in my family... a bit like having a "two pack" on the wrong side of your body.
...and now we're doing Buttchat! TMI. Heeheehee
 3. I recently did an Open Mic at Derby's Horse and Groom with a few friendly people to dip my toe in the water, so to speak. I'd now like to take a little swim. I am offering to learn tunes for people based in or very close to Spondon or Derby city who need a bassist for minor events such as Open Mic with a view to gaining experience. You might have a specific date to aim for or perhaps you just want to jam and see where it goes from there. I am willing to share costs for rehearsal room fees. I am available during week days too. Ultimately I would like to find myself in a modest little band that can practice within range of my wallet since I have to use taxis when I can't get my mate to drive me. The aim would be to play local venues and eventually break even on costs. Ta
 4. Ahh butt is it the fault of the trousers for having no arse or the wearer?
 5.
I bypassed the issue by going solo. Then basically got head hunted for my vurrent gig.
As a singing bassist? That is something I may have to work on for myself.
 6.
Synth bass? Aaaaaaargh! Picture me grabbing a pair of ornate Church candlesticks and using them to make a cross ...
Sorry. I thought I was doing everyone a favour by saying synth instead of keys. Self help groups are available. Oh, Regards to you both!
 7.
It doesn't turn completely face-down but tilts away from me. Is your neck strap button in the standard place? Mind you, it was an awfully long time ago when I had a B2 but I don't remember that having the same issue as the B2V/B2AV.
Yes. I haven't modified anything. Perhaps my massive gut helps. I hang the axe so's my fret hand is about shoulder level in first position and the paddle shaped body rests on my belly button to stop it catching fluff.
 8.
I think it's funny that some many of us have got so used to the idea that the neck of a bass (or guitar) will be finished natural rather than matching the rest of the instrument that a matching headstock (and only the front) is something unusual!
Isn't it written somewhere in The Big Book of British Tradition that rock bands will have a Fender of some description underpinning the rhythm whilst providing a frame for the melody? I think the addendum says that you can not be serious unless there is a Fender on stage. I could name other brands so don't think Fender are the only brand that bores me. Other opinions are available.
 9. Yes. There was a link posted to a similar article recently. I can't seem to find it now. We all knew that we're fundamental to any decent band anyway didn't we? When I say "we" I mean to include double and synth bass too.
 10.
If I tried a new bass in a shop that went head down on a strap I'd put it back without plugging it in, that said I dont think I've ever tried a bass on a strap in a shop, luckily all the Thunderbirds and Rickenbackers I tried were dogged with other faults so I never got that far, they look nice though
I doubt that many of us do. It isn't often that I go out with the intention of looking at instruments in a shop but when I'm out and about, I make time for it if I see one. I thought of asking for a strap once or twice but I know from experience that new straps need breaking in and just trying to fit one can cause problems resulting in accidental damage to the instrument so I don't. Given that I don't play sat down at all, I can't really assess what I'm trying out very well. Just well enough to give me an idea if whether I'd pick it out of a line up again. If I was shelling out for an instrument I'd make an exception and have a proper old go with a strap of my own before committing.
 11.
Fair enough - was only making the suggestion that ths was something that may need looking into - obviously it has. Then again, some people love the thwacky, clanky sound of the plastic board on the Squier VMJ, so it may well come down to taste.
You made a fair point. Having never played a metal fingerboard I don't know but I suspect it would be okay with nylon flats.
 12.
Must I? I'm not. It's because the centre of gravity is well forward of the neck strap pin location.
You said - "...to stop it turning face-down." Strange, mine hangs with no issues apart from the slight neck dive.
 13.
Hah. That brings to mind our singer's flute performance. Oh - where do I get a remote bubble blower?
A good old drink of Fairy Liquid to chase down some of Dr Windbreaker's Magic Salts should do the trick... just give it a good half hour before you're due to perform. Oh and have a large bucket on standby.
 14.
YEEEEESSSSSSSS! Don't get me wrong, the other stuff is all well and good but metalflake is proper lush. Tell me it will have a matching headstock! Please!
Yup headstock and all. When I say metalflake I mean the deep translucent lacquer finish that allows for large gold flake to be used for maximum scatter. None of your flat tat finishes, oh no. Glad you like the idea. Regards
I've been looking at Basslab instruments for a while now. http://basslab.de They build using their own recipe "tuneable composite" materials layered over a form which is later removed, leaving a hollow body (and neck!). They use automotive paint and lacquers even on fretless basses, where the fretboard is also often painted.
That's very interesting. Thanks. You can't say it leans on conventional thinking from first glance anyway.
 15.
The Cinema Show by Genesis. Start with solo acoustic 12-string guitar, tuned dDgGaDeGbbee (ie non-unison pairs on the middle two pairs, E and E pairs down a full step). Add bass pedals after a couple of minutes. Frantic triplet picking in the middle bit. Fade out, unplug, switch to double-neck Shergold. Instrumental in 7/8, switch to bass (finally) for the last few seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDLrpG0DCqI
 16.
I tend to put a demo of any of my songs onto soundcloud in case of any copyright issues then register it with the PRS, not sure if this covers all the basses (see what I did there ) or not
Until you pointed it out - no. Heeheehee. Regards
 17.
Stay with it. I started a band in March 2016 - all was going well until in our first proper gig last September we discovered that our singer was snorting coke, . That; coupled with a couple of heated, throwing his toys out of the pram incidents and I had no choice but to tell him where to go and find a replacement. I was gutted to have the project set back to almost square one, but it had to happen as I didn't want the band to be tarnished with any drug-related activities; or a raving diva in our midst. Found our replacement singer 3 weeks later and we played our first gig with the new line-up last night - the band is sounding better than ever; everyone is fired-up and the future is looking good. By the way; the vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist all joined through Joinmyband.
Good man! It shows backbone on your part and I think your decision will serve you well. Performers can be on the arrogant side to start with. Bolivian marching powder makes them intolerable to be around. I sometimes hear what I think of as a cokey nasal quality in a singer's voice and I wonder how long it'll be before they end up with just one massive nostril to go with the massive ego trip.
 18.
My advice? Try and jump into bed with an already established singer / guitarist / drummer and start something that way. A local 'character'. I'm fairly local to to Nantwich and the scene is incredibly incestuous around that area. I see the same players in different variations of the same band and if you aren't in 'the clique' you don't get a chance. Maybe it is like that everywhere.
This is sometimes referred to as the Fleetwood Mac shuffle. Not sure why... I will assume that you aren't really citing incest. I do agree that things can be very cliquey. I am on the edge of a local clique right now but it is one that I do not care to be a part of unless on a professional basis. It is enough to rub shoulders at open mic nights without being too matey with certain characters.
 19. You deserve a knighthood for that. Thanks. I hereby dub thee - Sir Lurksalot (Just pulling your plonker)
 20.
That's because it's bodyless too. I keep meaning to move the strap peg on my Hohner B2AV round to where it is on a Status Streamline, not to stop neck dive but to stop it turning face-down. My Thumbs are a bit neck-divey. I think a suede strap, or something with similar frictional qualities, would solve the problem.
I have a B2A that is perfectly balanced for the way I hang it from the strap. The pull out leg thingy is of no use when I'm sat down but then I can't play a conventional body shape from the seated position without comfort issues either. I would say that the additional weight of the five string neck (yes I know it's neck-through) is more to blame. If you compare the four string with the five string you will find a slightly larger body on the five which offsets the heavier neck up to a point. I am glad they didn't make it even heavier though to get the same fine balance as is found on the four stringers. You must be using the lower of the two bridge end strap buttons to get the problem that you describe. Is there a reason? It seems counter-intuitive otherwise.
 21.

Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder: getting my hands around the run took ages. Much like the folks talking about Hysteria by Muse (A song I have not yet tried properly) I probably took eight to ten weeks to learn this one, starting really slow and gradually increasing speed. I'm still not to a point where I would be comfortable gigging it but it's getting there.

Yeah, Sir Duke. I had the tab from this; I might be reading it wrong but one part of it didn't make sense to me. I made up my own bit by ear from the version I know best in a YT clip of that with "I Wish" following immediately after. I have exactly the same difficulty as with rhythm stick, the faithful execution, in this case, of the little giddyup in the middle eight (or is it called the bridge?). I now tend to go to the much easier groove of I Wish and skip Sir Duke. I'm not helping myself by doing myself out of that part of my practice but I really love I Wish. At my age I think I can indulge myself a bit.
 22.
Thank you Comrade ✊ ☺
Welcomski
 23.
Yeah those goddamned Commies using non Mercan instruments.....
Is this what you meant to say? I fixed it for you because it had become part of a quote attributed to me...
 24. Slight modification to OP specification. Will continue to refine specification until I am happy enough with it to get costs.
 25.
As I visualise the instrument I'm imagining something very Ritter like!
In some respects yes. I can't give you the image that is in my mind but ideally it wouldn't be too far from the Cora in appearance if you transpose the gold with the white. Oh and I think I'd like the pups in blue as well.
