1. Hello Bottomofthebarrel and welcome again.
 2.
I mean, is being nice THAT much of a challenge for some people on here?
Point taken, quite agree!
 3.
Look forward to joining in.
You already have. Welcome Glenn. There are plenty of folk like yourself and myself here as well as a wealth of talent and experience, oh... and wit.
 4.
Be aware there are some people reading Basschat who like nothing better than to drop those named players a heads up.
Thank you for your your advice. I'd edit my comment but that would make me a hypocrite. Anyone wishing to "dob me in" can go right ahead. I spent part of my formative years living and working in Dublin when U2 were breaking. I'd love to meet Bono, he was something of an inspiration to us in the day and I am quite sure he has seen much worse than my little jab and taken it in good humour. Sorry for any offence caused, none was not intended.
 5.
I saw some of this this on iplayer not long ago. To me it was utterly flat and lifeless. Never heard Laura Mvula before and won't be checking her out any time soon. Not impressed with this bloke Paul Buchnanan, half mumbling half sleeping
Please don't judge the participants of a tribute on their performance of another artist's work. Healthy good natured criticism in this discussion apart, ALL of the people at the Prom are well respected in their own field of endeavour. Oh, and Laura Mvula is usually a LOT more interesting to listen to.
 6.
Hobbyist. I enjoy playing music (mostly bass and drums) all by myself. The wife likes it too! She is still here, so I really think she does
Welcome Bottomofthebarrel. Looking forward to seeing you in the Introductions section.
 7.
Well it's the 21st century, a hole's a goal and all that
SPLUTTER! Do you mind? I was eating my breakfast when I read that! It's put me right off my jam doughnut.
 8.
I have made a huge amount of friends in the music business, who have helped make me enjoy and laugh my way through 43 years in the business of show. Would I do it all again ? Absolutely, although I suspect the working opportunities are not in an abundance for a Bassist as was in my hey days. Things have changed a lot. I guess you had to be there.
Hahahahahaha. Thanks for that. I found it inspirational even though I am closer to your age. I passed on the music challenge as a youth when my band mates wanted me to commit full time. I already had an excellent apprenticeship and felt I wanted a guaranteed living rather than going for it like you did. No regrets you understand but it is nice to dream about where I might have ended up with my mates all those years ago.
 9.
I'm not sure what a "Pro" is.
Pro=professional. Professional being the currently accepted term for someone who earns most of their income from what they do. In ye olden times, use of the word "professional" would be reserved for Doctors, Lawyers and those who put many years of formal study towards their life career. From what you say Blue, you are a professional musician in that music is now your full time job. PS, can you post landscape photos of your gigs next time please? We'd see more of what it's like for you there than we do in portrait mode.
 10.
...U2's unreleased 'acoustic' album...
U2 can't do an "unplugged" album. The sudden release of pressure when the cork is pulled from Bono's ego would flatten small children and animals for quite a distance! The safety elf wont have it, sorry.
 11.
Rolf Harris plating a stylophone? I'd pay money to see that.
BWHARHARHARHARHARHAR! Sorry about that folks. When I looked up the slang definition behind "plating" (cheers Skankdelvar) I realised my understanding of the word fellatio was flawed. I always thought it was an antiquated term used in classical notation for the pink oboist.
 12. Heeheehee. Careful now we might have to get Rolf Harris on tour with U2 plating the Stylophone! You'd see some haters then man.
 13.
I do pro gigs and hobbyist gigs, and I've got a 'proper' job. It's just gigging, innit.
Maybe so but that appearance in the BBC battle of the bands thingy was class.
 14.
so who are the pros and who are hobbyists?
Born again hobbyist aiming at OM nights locally. I like to play and try to improve as a musician but only for the sake of enjoyment. Not embarking on a career, a formal education or owt else.
 15. Welcome Chris, Lots of 'bikers and ex-'bikers here. You'll likely enjoy it. Watcha riding at the moment?
 16.
Quite so. The very nature of Mr Edge's innovative approach practically demands a solid and sober foundation. When one considers in turn Mr Bono's deliberately loose vocalisations one begins to understand why the rhythm section more or less 'sits on it' while the guitarist and singer wander off all over the place. One of those great 'What If's' is what if U2 had been a five-piece with a rhythm guitarist? Let us call him Flann O'Brien. Would Flann have gone the Rick Parfitt route and simply whacked out block chords on the four, thereby permitting Mr Clayton to drift around in a Phil Lesh stylee? Or would Flann have espoused a looser, more exotic, even funky approach and drawn black looks from Mr Edge? We shall never know. All we may conclude is that U2 are a fairly unique sounding band and that the bass player is (probably) doing exactly what is necessary in that context. This is the problem when we try to evaluate bass players in isolation or stack them up against others. Comparison is not only odious but fruitless. .
If there HAS to be a fifth member, I'd like him/her to play the washboard.
 17.
I must be (almost) alone in not hating any bass player really.
Nope. Some I don't "get" but I can learn from anyone. I'm quite sure that there is a large silent part of the membership that agree with you. The title of this thread uses the word "hate" but like a lot of words its meaning had been devalued by overuse in teen chatter.
 18.
It's Bonio I hate, just cos he's such a sanctimonious little knob.
I've not seen his little knob but the qualities you describe make him an ideal front man for a band of U2s stature. I think I'm right in saying that U2 isn't his band anyway, one of the other members started it. I'd larf if it turns out to be Adam.
 19.
I share your culinary tastes, but never tire of the 9th, personally. S'all good, really.
I listened to the 9th symphony this morning. I can't knock it but I think I preferred the Trout quintet mainly because of the size of the ensemble. More like a decent band with each instrument distinct in a way that only soloists can achieve in an orchestra. I learned something about my taste in music today. Cheers.
 20.
I think the second team are slightly disadvantaged. Could I suggest Mark King, Adam Clayton, and Chris Wolstenholme for that team, and Jaco Pastorius, Bernie Edwards, and John Entwistle for the dead team?
What I took from that was that MAJ is disadvantaged in that two of its bassists are ALIVE! Good one, heeheehee
 21. Welcome Josie. Sounds like you've had an interesting couple of years of self discovery.
 22.
U2 were formed in the 70s.
I lived in Ireland at the time and found myself working in Dublin after I finished school in 1980. I think it was the first Live Aid in 1985 when U2 started to go big internationally. We had watched the lead up to that for a few years. As fresh liberated young men we had to admire Bono's barefaced cheek at stealing the "Doo - Doodoo" hook from Lou Reed's Take a Walk on the Wild Side while he played the crowd like a true pro. Don't condemn me, as a young Dub, it was that or become a fan of The Boomtown Rats.
 23. First to three makes this the winning score for MAJ. There need be no further argument. For my next trick I will convince you ALL that black is white and then try not to get killed on the next zebra crossing.
