It might be wisest not to remove any wood in this area. The clearance hole and access point for the truss rod already weakens the neck. As far as I know you can't reinforce it with a volute after either.

No apologies necessary. I was pulling your leg to some extent. You will find that pickguards can be more controversial than you'd ever imagined all the same.

That crinkle finish actually looks good. It's a shame it's a defect.

One thing to be cautious about... Your block of wood is presenting an end grain towards the pickguard screw. I advise you drill a pilot hole for the screw that is the diameter of the screw core before attempting to fit it. In addition, make sure the screw is waxed and even then be cautious when you tighten the screw. If you do all of these things you might avoid the grain splitting. Good luck.
