  1. There is something for everyone out there
  2. Here are some pics of it. It is PROPER lush. Like, PROPER! Just as well it is not a 5er etc etc etc.
  3. Those look yummy as well but look like they are not available until he can find a new manufacturer. Not that I will be buying in the near future! But I like to plan ahead
  4. The corner of the room. I just could not trust a DB, or a cello for that matter (I used to play) to a stand. It is asking for gravity adventures.
  5. These look lovely. http://www.mjbl.co.uk/double-bass-tuning-machines What other options are there out there?
  6. I shall not be transitioning from 5 string to 4 string if that is what you mean.
  7. I blagged it once. I was working with a Jazz monster pianist (and a drummer who would call out the changes to me when I got lost) who called a tune called Oleo. He counted it off at INSANE bpm in the rehearsal. I said that I could not think at that speed, let alone follow a chart. He told me to just play anything and he would cover me. I laughed. He said no, do it. On the gig he played the whole thing "outside" but with clearly discernible melody and solos while I played absolutely abstract walking lines which did not follow any discernible pattern at breakneck speed. I had NO idea what was going on but looked like a Don. Obviously I have blagged it many other times, but that was the best of them all. I still cannot work out what he did.
  8. I no longer trust myself to comment on bass tone in public. My ears are not what they were. Wear earplugs everyone.
  9. It is true, absolutely everything does come through BC if you wait long enough! I do not need another bass but I cannot stop myself monitoring here for the interesting stuff, and this IS the interesting stuff.
  10. Get on twitter and facebook for PF and ask public questions. Find the email address of their CEO and email him direct with the whole story.
  11. There was a blue LP thing of his floating around years ago. On here or what was here before here. It was kind of undulating and pneumatic. It was sublime.
  12. There is a lot to like about this bass. This is a classic rambling about an instrument but not buying it post. But the aesthetics are very classy indeed - yes it is boutique-y but in 10 years time it will still be classy and understated. Some boutique stuff does not age well. This will. It looks beautifully made and I tried a bass with one of those Delanos in it once and it was just superb. I like the double strap buttons for "putting down" stability. Such an obvious thing but so few people do it. And a jack socket which means that you can put it down while plugged in. Weird how unusual that is as well. I shall stop rambling now, but this is lush.
  13. I have played two of them. They deliver on all their promise.
  14. I have often wondered why Yew was not used more in Lutherie as is intersting to look at. Now I know. The guy who works on my Double Bass made fireplace surrounds out of Yew and very attractive the were.
  15. I had to call on Interparcel insurance recently. Because the bass was packed in a proper transit case (Pelican type) it was fine. But they took 3 months to pay.
  16. The whole book is TOTALLY worth reading. Buy it. Where else would you read (paraphrase) "I was asked if I had seen Hendrix play - I answered 'no, but he saw me'"? Written in the way that makes you read all the way through without putting it down if at all possible.
  17. Comment notifications on this thread are my favourite thing.
  18. Haterz gonna hate, but Manilow has some seriously good material. You do not achieve that level of success without hitting the right spot.
  19. I was just thinking that I might have time to start messing with this. Then I realised that I left my spokeshaves at work and that is now locked. Ho hum.
  20. https://vimeo.com/399832399?fbclid=IwAR01714zkVUh2O3btHBqZrYoogER2brFwwtMulknEztvl4xFkoZikVZGRzg Rambling Boy - Charlie Haden Doc - I think there for another week. I stole this from the Discovering Double Bass FB feed.
  21. 7th generation super displacement drivers with their hyper efficiency etc etc etc. There is no substitute for surface area shifting air.
  22. One of the interesting things about dealing with people who are experienced players but not theory friendly is that they actually do know a lot but do not know the correct labels.
