1. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/243237-double-bass-bash-sun-5-oct-1100-500-risley-park-hotel-derby-road-risley-de72-3ss/ Discussion about activities on the event thread.
2. So, this is really happening. We could just hang out all day and talk about gut strings (and I am all for that) but perhaps people could note any topics that they would like some leading on and then if anyone else who is coming has any expertise in that area they could do a 20 minute slot maybe midway through the afternoon. I would love a 5 minute primer on slapping (not that any gig I have ever done has called for it, but ..... you know...... it looks kinda cool). I am sure there is stuff I could lead on and if anyone comes up with a request which matches my diminishing skill set I would be happy to step forward. I am not talking about 1.5 hour session with hand outs, just a more practical hands on kind of thing. It would be useful if people could print out a little crib sheet about what set up they have so that we can get a quick handle on bits we want to try and also how different bits interact with each other. Bass->strings->pickup->preamp->amp->speaker Bow -> rosin Any other ideas? Exciting times!
3. Tell us about the egg chair. What type and how much?
4. Most stuff comes up on here if you wait long enough. I did the same and picked all of it apart from the woodwork up on here. It is just a waiting game. I have Fralin J5 pickups I picked up (just in case I did not like the Nord pickups I also picked up ) up for sale now. It will all slowly add up, but it is a lot of fun
5. I am very serious about it! I am awaiting delivery of a set of roundwound strings for my NS EUB to be tuned an octave beneath standard 4 string tuning. Excited does not even begin to describe it. I am dangerously close to fretting an EUB for the ultimate scale length.
6.
I've one for sale but Dingwall scale length ....?
Ugh! I wish! If I were to go for it properly I guess I would go fanned fret, but my £220 35" scale neck through Harley Benton will have to do for now. We do actually live in a wonderful age of lutherie - there is not a great deal wrong with it apart from being a bit heavy.
7.
I have a rough question kinda in the same vein... I want to use my 4 string lakland at drop A (AEAD) - what kinda gauge would be needed for this? Best to get a 5 string set and ditch the high string? Will I need to likely need to file the nut? It's 34" scale.
That should work fine. I strung my Jazz that way for a long time. It just depends on the nut really. Only one way to find out
8. I picked up a Warwick .175 one which is OK but is tonally out of whack with the rest of the strings on the bass. I have ordered a set from Newtone and then I will mess with it for a bit to see if I can even get my head round an extra string. I can play a 5 without thinking. I can play a 4 without thinking. I have a feeling I will have to think while playing a 6. I am not keen on thinking while I play. I might even have to practice.
9. What's the neck wood?
10. Mmmmmmm......... a solid body made of one piece of London Plane.
11. I am 97% certain that they do. If you are thinking of using then as a replacement if you could measure the Fender ones I will check measurements for you.
12. Bump
13. Thanks for the full story Alex. My amplification needs are covered at the moment, but I do know that there are a few people who would love a small as possible form factor power amp. If it was convection cooled as well, all the better. Not that I am telling you how to run you business, but there might be a gap in the market there.
14.
They love a lower tone Owen !!! See what I did there
Ba-da-tsh!
15. I read a bit of that then got a bit light headed! This stuff is way beyond me, but I would happily pay someone to programme a design for me. Hint hint.
16.
I'll be bringing a Tricky Audio Fearless F112 (wedge) .
Uh oh! Now I am in trouble. In a good way. Sorry, I will have to bring a plank with me as well to try it out. I am aware that this will lower the tone.
17. No. Really. I would LOVE to try one of the Greenboy wedges.
18.
After speaking to Guy from Tricky Audio last night - it may be possible for me to bring another greenboy cab as well, if anyone wants a nosy?
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!! please. I would LOVE to see one of the wedges. 12" or 15". That would be superb.
19. I had a bass wheel. I got very edgy about making the bass feel every bump and thud that my local pavements had to offer. I stopped using it. Having said that, I had a home made carrying strap that I used for years until it snapped and caused a £2.5 rebuild, so what do I know?
20. There will be no bass solos. And even if there are, everyone will just talk across them anyway. It's traditional.
21. There is a bit of me that would love to try it, but, sadly, I do not NEED a new cab.
