I have one. Useless for acoustic playing. But everything else is unless it is a DB. It needs a decent buffer preamp. But it sounds superb. It has the the low mid air shifting DB thud. Tuning issues higher up? Yes. Low tension strings? Yes, but I really like that. The world is broad and full of different opinions and that is what makes it great, but I do not consider it to be a toy in any shape or form.
It's a slightly different mode Owen but it i do like your Hofner. Stop tempting me.
Mr Router and I could whip it into shape pretty quickly if you give me the nod!
Very nice.
You could have an original for less http://basschat.co.uk/topic/211980-hofner-5003-1963/ However, I would go for a Kala Ubass.

That glorious tobacco sunburst finish is a true picture, it really is that rich. The bass is all original, and has picked up a couple of marks along the way. There's a none-too-obvious blemish on the front and a repaired hole on the back. The neck was re-set in 2007 by the top Hofner man in London (Andy Gibson, who does all of Music Ground's and Macari's Hofners). She's strung with period-correct flats and high-ish action. Sound? Woody. No, very woody. No really, I mean seriously woody. Can easily deliver a truly superb, dark dub sound but switch in an instant to a classic Beatles tone. This case has more mojo than Muddy Waters. This case looks like it stepped out to the corner shop in 1969 for a packet of Rothmans and came back 30 years later after touring the States and Japan. This cased is relic'd, OK.

The market is slow. I guess my next stop is Ebay where I will start at £450. By the time I have payed all the fees + stuff it will cost me close to £50 anyway so here it is for £400 (Paypal gift of bank transfer). Ta, like. Mid 60s thumpy goodness. Single pickup. Flats mid scale. Big bodied semi - not Beatles stuff.. The tone control needs fixing but I live in a place where no one can do that stuff. I will knock £20 off for that. Pics up later but doing this while I remember. £ only. No trades.
must sound awesome! I saw you were selling it a year or so back (serching Berg IP in sales section) but you changed your mind?
I keep thinking of selling but then realise that I am not going to get anything else close to it without schlepping an awful lot more kit around. I'm sure that I could be happy with one the newer uber 2x12 cabs, but for now I am staying put. -
Didn't Bergantino do powered cabs for a while with DSP? Their website doesn't have them listed anymore, I suppose the product line wasn't supportable in the market place.
I have a 3x 10" + Compression driver Berg powered cab (IP310). 1Kw powersoft amp module with full DSP. It is a thing of beauty. However it is proper old school thick wood and ceramic magnets to the max so weighs the same as a small house. All is forgiven when I plug it in though -
A bunch of stuff. Open to trades.
Me too.
Not all PA cabs are equal. I used a Mackie SRM450 for a few months. It ran out of headroom pretty quickly. It was great with the Mackie sub, but that is so heavy. Not to say the more recent generation of stuff is the same as things have moved on and properly set up DSP is superb. I will never enjoy my Double Bass live as much as I did when I was going through a d&b Audiotechnik rig. It was just sublime. -
Thanks Clarky, I figured there was a way but thought it would be good to know before rather than after the event.

I have a piece of kit I want to send back to the manufacturer in the US for repair. Am I going to get smacked for taxes when it comes back in? TIA
