Favourite Bassline YOU have written and recorded
Owen replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I bought an Adrenalinn specifically to do that and then............. ummm........... didn't. I am now not doing it with Mainstage and a Macbook
Thanks! It's not actually delay but a MIDI controlled filter opening and closing as the last note of the phrase sustains. And yes it's completely impossible to do without using MIDI synchronisation and a click for the drummer. That recording was actually done with just a couple of loops and some extra programmed drum hits, but we did play it live with one of the loops separated out into it's individual drum sounds and triggered from an electronic kit.
Here's one of mine. "Love Junkie" by SugarBox This is a fairly accurate picture of the sort of music and basslines I was composing back in the late 90s. It starts a bit dubby and ends up as a manic filtered "synth" sound. It was all done with my Overwater bass going through multiple MIDI controlled effects. It's even a mix of finger style and pick playing.
I have always wanted to use a delay on bass live to create that pulsing effect but never trusted a drummer to hold it together unless there was a click involved. I love the way it drops off at the end of the phrases at the beginning - it really opens things up. Really nice use of texture. -
I am loving the colour scheme and would happily have a Jazz painted just like that. Dangeroulsy I am having a J5 built at the moment!

Some nice stuff on here. I do not hugely enjoy listening to myself because I annoy myself when I hear my personal cliches etc but sometimes it comes together https://soundcloud.c...s/12-nos-da-mam The first was recorded in a local studio where my DB sounds better than anywhere due to the lovely ATC monster monitors they have and the fine Neumann they put on the bass. One day I will own a pair of ATCs for my house. What was gratifying was that I managed to control my urge to play more than I needed to and just rumbled along at the bottom. It is self-control which is sadly lacking in much of what I do What usually happens is that I get comfortable playing what I had intended and look for ways to spice it up. Sadly I do not have the Pino "taste gene" so inveriably have to apologise 30 seconds into playback, turn on my heel and go in to do it again https://soundcloud.com/owen-lloyd-evans/sunshine This was done at home and the structure of the bass line ebbs and flows nicely. Nothing is more important than structure of a line for me, if I had the chops to play fast weaving complex chromaticisms around a vocal I would use them at all times obv, but if the line did not breath with the song I would just get angry with myself. This was one of those lines which you chuck down, feel that it is going well but get more and more nervous as the song progresses incase you mess up. You get to the end with the feeling of "phew, I might actually get away with that!" -
The top cab is the CxL112EV and is vinyl covered with corner protectors - the EA logo is red but the light makes it look white. I am guessing that this has an EV driver in it. The other one is the other one Both sound much of a muchness. Really nice cabs for not much money. If I was not cabbed up already I could be more than happy with these.

Thanks. What I am doing is putting single J pickups into MM cases. While I am at it I will also put half a P pickup into each case. I will have two MM cases each with a J and half a P in them. These will then be wired so both halves of the P pickup think they are in one case.

I have a bass which had a MM humbucker in it. I do not get on with the MM thing. I have taken it out. I like J pickups and P pickups. My intention is to rout another MM pickup hole in it and get two J pickups in MM covers into it. While I was thinking I thought about putting half a P pickup in each case as well so that I could have either option open. My one problem is that if I have a 1/2 a P in each case then it will push both J pickups out wider - closer to the bridge and neck. I know that some people love the 70's bridge position etc etc etc, but with both J pickups on, how much difference is it really going to make? I never use the bridge pickup soloed.

I have doubled on lots of different amps. I use an fdeck preamp in front of whatever amp for the DB and that makes everything easy. I would love to try a dubster with my DB. That would be lush beyond!
Aberdeen, Scotland Yo Owen, i know dont need to drop alot to get Plonkin, but id rather spend what i can to get the best possible setup. though after the last Gear4Music incident i wouldnt touch them with a 20ft cattle prod.
Far be it from me to douse your GAS

Gear4music bass. Will you need new strings? Yes. They come up here 2nd hand fairly regularly. Will it need the bridge filing down? Yes. A set of files will cost you about £6. Will it need the fingerboard planed true? Possibly - between £50-£100. Can you sell the case on ebay? Yes. I sold one for £120. Will it respond like one of the great Italian masters? No. Will it be fine and dandy for going "thud" or "Bdum-dum-dum-dum? Yes It would be cool to drop £2K (+++++++) on a bass, and there is every chance that you would love it, but you do not have to. If you feel later on that you want to upgrade then by all means do so and enjoy the process, but you do not have to spend 4 figures to get going.

I used to do this with series 1 Mackie SRM450. I ran out of headroom too quickly. It was a different story when I added the Mackie actve sub, but the portability was lost then
Woah, that JC is gorgeous ... but unfortunately though heart says yes, head is saying 'don't be a silly b****r you'll never play it live'. Head is winning right now unfortunately.
The force is weak with this one. This is not the BC way.
After the recent experiment with felt picks, my cyber-wanderings led me to http://www.ukulele-plectrums.co.uk/
I bought 10 for just under £12. They are lush!

I picked up some leather picks from http://www.ukulele-plectrums.co.uk/leather-plectrum-bass-guitar-large-stiff-lilac-designer-x-10-p-162.html?zenid=e8lqt8cuu1ku3mid93i45ohc53 and they are everything I hoped the felt ones would be - lush! Pretty thick, as in 3 or 4mm, but all the directness of pick without the clank. Sometimes clank is good, sometimes it is nice to not have it.
