1.
I must confess, I don't know any of these players. I stumbled across it by finding the Joe Fink videos. Obviously these are videos to sell the instruments that are being played - and what instruments! But the quality of playing is breath taking. This cover of All Blues is simply stunning:
That's proper honest playing, right there.
2. I changed the valve in this a couple of days ago. It is now more immediate than it was. In a nice way. More importantly I messed with the internal gain trim pot thing. I turned it all the way down, just to see. I then screwed it all back together and mounted it in my rack and went to bed. I turned it on last night to give someone a lesson and lo and behold, no output. That gave me 10 minutes of head scratching until I remembered the trim pot. Once turned up again everything was fine. I am only really cataloguing this here because there seems to be no info out there on the WWW about the internal gain pot.

I don't half fancy this! http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f126/fs-lakl...l-flake-744511/
4. Getting there slowly. Pete is going with side LEDs and is looking forward to those more than anything else Thanks to Mr Letts for his link to kingblossomguitars on youtube. Pete looked at the vid and said "well, that is a no brainer".
5. It has the latest upgrade and just does bonkers things. I am going to do it a different way. £270 to your door. Want it you know you do.
6. OK valve people. All this valve talk reminded me that I had a spare valve that I bought because ...... ummm........ It is a Tung Sol Russian 12AX7, I put it in my Demeter HBP-1 this evening, replacing a EH one that was in there. Do I need to burn it in? How do I do that? On firing up it seemed less spongy than the EH. The EH was almost compressing the initial transinent in any note. Compressing is too strong a word but I hope you get the drift. It's a whole new world!
7. I am being sucked into a valve vortex. I am fancying a Jule Amps Monique. We need a valve bash so that those of us who are young in the ways of valves can plug in diferent valves and see what all the different ones do.
8. If you are paying tax on your music income, insurance is a deductable business expense.
9.
Depends on the insurer.
If you are taking a fee for the gig I would be......... pleasantly surprised if they paid up. Cover from theft from vehicles is usually an extra premium on recognised musical instrument insurance. I would again be pleasantly surprised if household insurance would want to cover a Dingwall Super J which had been taken while you wheeled your amp in to the venue. I am not saying that I am right and you are wrong, but we are dealing with insurance companies here. They are not cuddly and friendly and if it is not specifically stated in the policy document, they just will not pay out. You can huff and puff as much as you like after the event. They will not care. They are not your friends. Bitter, moi?
10. I am not technically sure what I use, I'm guessing the Rabbath is closest to it but I have never looked at it so am not sure. My teacher studied with Garry Karr and I use 1 finger per semitone. There is a very slight pivot going on, but if I want to I can do F to G sharp on the E string (one of the Enigma variations - I cannot remember which one, it has been a long time!) without pivoting. I got some very odd looks from other bass tutors when I went to youth orchestras outside my county, but my intonation has always been rock solid. I must admit I feel that it is more about knowing the fingerboard than a set finger pattern. When I am feeling lazy or my chops are down I will do octaves and 5ths using fingers 1- 4, but if I am doing stuff that is fast and tricky then it is 1234 all the way. The lack of shifting always struck me as being a more stable way of playing. Having said that, Simandl is used very widely and everyone seems to be very happy with what they are doing. For me it is more about knowing where the note is and which finger is closest.
11. If you go with house insurance and it gets stolen on a paying gig the insurance company will not pay up. For real.
12. We live in the golden age of bass lutherie. These basses are just superb and dirt cheap.
13. I think foam and felt give a very different vibe. Here is some vid of felt ones. Very nice indeed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwYoi9G67DU...feature=related
14. If you have a Macbook then there will be a bunch of stuff in Garageband. For live stuff I'm sure they will be fine and dandy

17. Can anyone who has a Stingray 4 measure the scratchplate for me? Length ways and width ways? Also a measurement on the control plate? TIA

19.
Where do you get hold of the strings for these? Are they in regular music shops?
Purple Turtle music for the 4 string set. I am nit sure if they stock the B. Roadtoad from the US for the B

Apple Mainstage

I have been messing with it for chunks of the day and it is pretty intuative and really quick. Sounds good and really easy to balance levels etc etc. I think it could be the future.

Apple Mainstage

Anyone using it for the filterage/distortion in their lives? It seems like an obvious thing to do if you already have the hardware.
22. 1st Pretenders album. One of the truly great albums.
23. I bought this from whynot last week because I have to try everything that is out there - gotta catch em all - you know how it is. It is a great unit, you can programme it using free software from Markbass via USB, no other interfaces or stuff like that. The Super Synth has been an eye opener in terms of programability. Why am I selling if it is all that? I have a Korg G5 and an Octavius Squeezer which are scratching all my synth itches . The set up I have covers what I need, but if I did not have them I would keep a hold of the MB. I can do pics if you want, but it is as new. This is now sold Thanks for all the interest.
24. I bet the Universal Audio sounds lovely with a bass. Sadly I cannot justify having it
