OMG ! This is so cool (midi without the mpup)
Owen replied to Bobo_Grimmer's topic in General Discussion
I tried it with 5 different basses (my wife has already told me I have too many). It was fine with them all really. I had to be careful with muting, but not to any excessive degree. If I was expecting full MIDI implementation down to low B then yes it was a duffer. However, I knew that would not be on so I was pleasantly surprised that it did what I expected it to do without overly having to modify my technique. Again, no use really beneath the 7th fret, but then we all knew that was was going to be the case. -

OMG ! This is so cool (midi without the mpup)

So, I paid my money and it came. The good news is that up above the 7th fret - for me - it works. The latency is certainly there, but I could happily play it without that being an issue as I adapted to it. I put a capo on 7th fret and noodled away for an hour this evening. A lot depends on the synth patch being used. I dusted off my old Alesis Nanobass module which I had been keeping for just the right occasion and with the right patch I was good to go. Not sure what else to say really - it is fun and useable. It will track down to just above an open D (depending on the patch) but is not really interested in anything beneath that as far as useable triggering goes. I know have sound module GAS. There is no sustain pedal input on the Alesis. Any questions? -
£80? I might well take a hit for the team on this one.
I have taken a hit for the team and will report back when it arrives. I fully expect it to be useless beneath the 12th fret, but I'm sure I will have fun as long as I can get the transpose button sorted on my sound module. -
Any of you FX visionaries been messing with a Sonuus G2M? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=48195 Any real world experience? I fully expect it to not be at all usefull beneath the 12th fret, and I will have to learn the dusty end of my fingerboard, but it looks like it could be fun.
Episode III - More wood butchery T All in all, another successful day in the workshop. In addition to the above, I also bookmatched the maple cap ready to glue it on. Next step will be to complete the routing for the control cavity, the battery box and then glue on the cap on.
Why would anyone cover that lovely bit of wood?

My bass is emitting the sound of distant thunder. Not in a good way. There seems to be a crackling that sounds like crackly pots. But this is when the volume is completely down. There is a VERY tiny bit of bleed through when the vols are off. The bass has 1 x EMG pick up and an EMG preamp but it also has a Piezo bridge with a Fishman preamp. Both these have independant vol controls. The noise is there in different rigs and with different leads. The noise is there with both volumes off and with either or both volumes on. I have changed the batteries. It has been dead quiet in all circumstances up till now. Any ideas?
If you can get your supplier to fraudulently date the invoice such that it falls within the financial year just finished, then that sorts it. The key word here is "fraudulently"!
I guessd as much. That will be a no then. Thanks everyone
Doubt it.
So do I, but I am on a roll! I have heard of friends doing it, but was not sure if it was kosher. Guessing not.
Hello Basschaters, I am thinking about a P type pick up for a on going 5 string project and there seem to be plenty of choices for these. I would like to get as close to that big fat p thumping sound and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations. So what is the collective basschat wisdom on the subject. At the moment I favor the EMG versions but that is largely down to the sound of their 4 string P pups. Many thanks Peter
I had a similar search recently and came across 2 manufacturers who did a P shaped P pick-up for a 5 string http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=45599&hl=

When I started a long time ago I had an accountant. After 3 years I muttered to him that I felt I was paying too much tax. He said that he would look into it and I got a £2K rebate. I have done my own books since then. I think I need to ask around my local muso community and find a new accountant. Is it possible to put purchases made lets say on this coming Wednesday back into the tax year that has just finished? I realise that this is a stupid question, but I cannot stop myself from asking it.

BEST THREAD EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apart from the fact that I did not start it a month ago when I could have had a splurge before the end of the tax year

I've been doing some research around the WWW as well and it turns out that in the recent past - but not now - you could claim for 100% of the cost of a computer against your tax bill. I would be new computered to the max if that was still applicable!
I'm also self employed and if I were to buy them they would not be capital with a WDA (writing down allowance or percentage claim) I would claim the full amount as an expense. Also FWIW instruments are not tax deductable in the sense in which I think you mean (correct me if I'm wrong), tax deductable as expenditure is what you spend in operating the business (i.e strings fuel costs office etc etc). Your instruments are capital investements and you are allowed 40% of their value in the year of purchase and 25% on the diminishing value in subsequent years. Thats how I understand it, the two things are in separate places on the tax return although it's arguable that it's all tax deductable
I figured that they would be an expense. Obv, I will clarify this with an accountant, but it is good to get a feel of things. Obv this is the wrong side of the tax year The instruments as capital invesments is what I should have said - that is how I do that. Thanks.

If I were to spend more than I think reasonable on a pair of custom moulded in-ear headphones are they tax deductable like an instrument is, or can I get a larger percentage of the outlay back? Just for clarification, I have self employed status.

Just remember, you are being paid to travel and you play for nothing. It should be OK then.
Very nice top that
Just for the uninitiated (not you NGH) - it is not nice top, it is a nice all the way through It's a solid piece of flame maple and is lush to the max. I owned this bass for a bit when I traded it as part of my "on/off" afair with my Bolin 5 ("on" at the moment for those of you following that particular saga). I then traded it back when I realised that only the Bolin sounds like the Bolin. The Spector is very fine indeed and if you are fancying it then dive in with confidence.
