    I think cocobolo is lush. I see it on basses around here. It seems to be used as a facing a lot. I really like solid wood and being able to follow grain around a shape. That is one of my "things". Is it silly heavy or could a body be made of a soild piece of it? If it is heavy the body could be really thin. Which would also be nice

    Hey Mark! I have a Bolin NS5 which has seperate controls for mag and piezo. Mag is EMG vol/ bass+treble/mid+sweep. Piezo is Fishman vol + roll off. the Fishman pre has a user adjustable bass boost on the board but not accesable in the heat of the moment. It is superb. Fishman will not sell me one unless I am a luthier and want a bulk amount. I love the sound of the piezo but do not much care for the bass - just a taste thing. The problem is, I cannot find anything which will make the same noise.

    What marks out a great bass player FOR ME (YMMV etc etc) is someone who makes the whole band sound good. It is feel rather than technique. Technique cannot ever hurt, but it is only a tool. Many guitarists can shred like food processors, but they will only ever be guitarists and not musicians. The difference is painfully obvious when you have two guitarists in the same band, one being a guitarist and the other being a musician who plays guitar. A decent technique is not rocket science and should be achievable fairly quickly, but sympathy and empathy to the song and the band takes real-time gigging and band rehearsal. It's like playing with a good drummer - you do not notice it until a bad drummer comes in. Why do Jazzers fill the ranks of the session pros? Partly because they have learnt to listen to what goes on around them and making it work. Just some musings
