I did a function gig once where they had hired in a rig because we said we could not bring our own. We arrived to find a Midas desk and a d&b rig. We had to set it ourselves. Never have I enjoyed such genuine, across the spectrum headroom and clarity for the whole band. When I played louder (5 string DB so I had plenty of dynamic range to play with) it just got louder, but the rest of the mix was not compromised in any way. It was like taking cotton wool out of my ears which I had not realised was there all those years before. And this was with a couple of 12" cabs. I really could not believe what I was hearing. They use their own amps and spk controllers obv. Heinously expensive mind you!

I have been thinking about the piezo thing a lot recently. I have a bass with a full Fishman setup on it (individual saddles/elements, on board preamp with individual volume pots and a bit of bass EQ) and was thinking about replicating it on something else and then I realised that the main instrument I use a Piezo on (Double Bass) has one element and manages to produce the whole range nicely. I have since bought a £4.99 element with a jack socket on it and intend to mount this in a rough and ready stylee under a bridge and put it into a decent pre-amp to buffer it properly. The Piezo is sitting on my desk and will not happen for at least 4 weeks, but I see no reason why it should not give a decent sound.

I am not sure what is hot and what is not, but the REAL trick with a piezo pick up is to get a really good pre-amp to control what the pick up chucks out. I am not talking about super duper EQ, just good control by decent input impedance.

Thanks Pete. I think I might save up for a SYB 5. Standing on it for 3 seconds seems to defeat the object of the excercise!

Whatever anyone says, the answer is no as soon as a loud drummer walks into the room. If the drummer thing is not an issue then I'm sure it will be very lovely.

Does this do the sustain thing like the Boss SYB 3 or 5 do? TIA as always.
