I must admit I struggle with Custom Shop stuff when Bravewood is out there.

I am in love with this bass tone. Will our favourite box give me something similar?

I would say an amp is essential. Playing too hard so as to be heard acoustically sets up all sorts of wrong precedents. A very small mixer so you can put two basses + music through said amp makes everything tidy. When I used to teach, certainly with beginners, I would ask them what song they wanted to play. Obv, sometimes there was a bit of direction needed. But if it is their song then there is a huge amount of determination to make it right. Tricky passages can be simplified so that they get the full experience. I also did one octave 24/124/134 scales with alternate fingers on the right hand so that they begin to develop dexterity right from the start. Obviously, 1 finger was enough for Jamerson should be enough for us, but.......

I used to run a Chevin Audio A3000 power amp bridged into an Eden 410XLT. It was never about the volume. It was about the headroom. Absolutely glorious. There is no substitute for lots of power. Obviously, knowing what to do with it is key (looking at you Liz).

I have been thinking about this and if it was the government it would be the only joined up bit of thinking they would have managed recently.

I had EMGs which whined like a tired, small child when it got close to an induction loop. Shielding is big and clever.

Don't get me wrong, I feel your pain! It was the sound I had been wanting to get down onto "tape" for a long time.

I left it because he did frankly astonishing things with the vocal. I had been working with her for perhaps 40 years and NEVER heard her as good. Nor since, sadly.

I have never liked it. Or in reality never managed to make it work for me. But then I bought a Spectracomp where someone else had done all that pesky programming. So I am fine with it. I also recorded some stuff and my bass and preamp sounded fabulous in the rough mix. Just like I dreamed it would. Then I was handed the final mix and it sounded like a bass. Not in a bad way, but not in the way I was hearing it in my head. This could have been EQ, but there was a healthy dose of control going on. I do not love compression, but I guess it has to be there.

I would still venture the opinion that any amp is fine with an fdeck preamp in front of it (as long as you would be happy to gig it with a plank). This has been my personal experience.
