  1. I am fully aware that this would be better with pictures but I had to go shopping. I will do some when I get home. This is brought to you from the M+S carpark.
  2. Because I am a Time Lord and can bend the laws of physics, I knew I could take a 21" solid body Uke Bass, put metal strings on it and turn it into a fully functioning 5 string bass. Cos, y'know, how hard can it be? And I am a visionary and can see things no one else can see. It turns out that I am not. Another crushing dissapoointment in my life. So, I am left with a £200 ebay import from China with a new bridge routed into the body and a Delano 5 string P pickup both done by Jabba the Wood Whisperer. I also put new machine heads on it. And new strings by Newtone. I tried different windings for the B and physics laughed at my Time Lord aspirations. So it is good to go now as a 5 string E to C bass. Or you could go all Marleax Consat Soprano and string it B to G but an octave up. The low B is not great AT ALL on it but fine as a really long and spongy thumb rest. It has the original pre-amp in it which functions really well and is Treble/Mid/Bass an a Vol control. And the Vol control has a center detent in it. Crazy madness. If you wanted to keep it as an at pitch E to C then you would need to order a new top C from Mr Newtone. If you wanted to get all Marleaux Consat Soprano on it then you would need to order a new set of strings fron Mr Newtone. Is it as good as a Marleaux Consat Soprano? Let's face it, no. But in reality it is a remarkably nice instrument which has been fettled by the Wood Whisperer. It is about 18% of the price (I made that up) and good to go.
  3. GAS rears it's ugly head!
  4. I have just proved that a B does not work on a 21" scale bass. Just in case you fancied going extreme.
  5. Thanks, I am figuring that is how it is. But I have made so many stupid mistakes in the past that I have learnt to check things first by now.
  6. Ta. This is what I am thinking but need grown ups to confirm my suspicions.
  7. I have been through WAY too many basses. I have changed pickups way too many times. The bass I keep coming back to has a set of Fralin J pickups in it. It has suffered in my personal bass shoot outs because they have a lower output than other ones so do not deliver that instant gratification hit of volume. But when I equalised volume the Fralins are just sweeter and more open (subjective terms) than other basses. Do "overwound" pickups sacrifice tone for volume? Please do not ask me to define tone. I am useless at it. It is just that the Fralins sound more natural and less forced. Is this due to windings etc? I am thinking of getting new pickups for another bass. They will have to be made due to an odd configuration. Is less actually more for pickup construction/overwinding?
  8. If the trough was filled it could be reliced, but that still leaves needing to find a new scratchplate.
  9. We know who that is Sadly not a block but a trough.
  10. Tragic, becuase otherwise it looks peachy.
  11. I was introduced as "this is my bass player' once. Just the once though.
  12. That is very special. But not in a good way.
  13. Due to my incompetence, I have one spare ticket for this evening. Anyone fancy it? Early show, doors open at 6.30. I am going to this. I want to sit down, and enjoy a meal while watching it. I wanted to book a table for 2. They are already gone. I can get a table for 4. Cost will be £53.25 per person (£30 for ticket and £20 deposit for meal which will be refunded from cost of meal). Does anyone want to take 2 seats at my table. Don't worry, we do not have to be best friends for ever. It is a straight commercial deal.
  14. I got excited, but trawled through what is in it and realised that I already have any of it that I would use.
  15. 1st picture is fret 1 on 36". 2nd picture is fret 1 on 34" 3rd picture is fret one on 33". The extra dissapears pretty quickly.
  16. Not helping my resolve here! That is a big and chunky bridge plate to replace.
  17. Thanks all. Rats - I think 16mm is too tight for me. I was thinking of picking one up and whacking a G&L pickup in there and making a 5 string L1000. It was fun while it lasted!
