I assume you've got the sound coming through a more decent source than the TV's built in speakers?
Always a problem with TV broadcast missing the bass guitarist out......I always listen to TV music through headphones and the little I heard of Duran and Jools show the bass was okay. If you listen on TV to drums you don't always hear the full kit and backing vocals are often way to low. Actually, a lot of large live indoor and outdoor music I've heard through big PA systems often misses decent bass sound, except the bass drum !

Booming from rear ports - suggestions? Problem now solved!
mybass replied to Painy's topic in Amps and Cabs
Getting front ported speakers would help so you can 'temper' the bass end more, ( I have MarkBass 2x10 front ported) Rear ported speakers away from the wall/ corner of stage may help or maybe as far away from the wall as possible. (Like my MarkBass 2x10 Traveller but actually, that cabinet doesn't boom too much at all) You know what, I've never had band members say my rear ported cabs where affecting them, hope they aren't being picky with you! Maybe some deep foam plugs ( like some hi if speakers come supplied with) would help, your speaker cones would probably still want to move some air. (I am not so sure on cabinet designs but I think speakers used in ported to those used in non ported cabinets have different design specs as a speaker generally moves air to operate efficiently). Hopefully some very knowledgable Basschatter will carry on this topic for you! -
Cleaning ebony fretboard... recomendations?
mybass replied to CamdenRob's topic in Repairs and Technical
My double bass repairman used and advised to use (Yamaha) Bore Oil on my ebony fingerboard. It is usually used by woodwind players. Oil on a rag drawn through the instrument to keep the wood in good order considering all the 'moisture' that gets blown into it. As per usual, dab some on a piece of rag and apply, not onto the wood straight from the bottle. A 40ml bottle recently cost be around £7 online. -
I have 2 I disagree. The choice of gig bags that actually fit in it is limited. Two times the latches have come undone in transit, despite them being padlocked. The new version with the strap is useless. The strap 'lock' comes open of its own accord.
I like using the SKB case ( with my bass in a padded gig bag inside)......Yes the latches are the 'weak' point so I always gaffa tape over the recessed lock area/ padlock as well. The holes for the padlocks are too big for smaller padlocks which in turn allow a little movement of the latches that can result in them becoming unlatched. I discovered this the first ever time I used the SKB. I would have thought this was a bit obvious to the designers!
Hi y'all, Looking to replace the machine heads on my Japanese 62 reissue Precision. I've had it since 1995 and one the machine heads has failed. What would people recommend that would drop right in? Cheers!
I would look at the Hipshot range I guess, unless you wanted to search Ebay (international) for original parts. I think the bass shop 'Bass Direct' could recommend the exact fit.
Spare parts and repair man's time can quickly get expensive! An experienced repair may be able to repair to component level rather than replace whole boards depending upon what's gone wrong. I've just been mending a Yamaha EMX5000 - yes they do have a complex earthing arrangement but that can be got round for testing - an experienced repairer should be able to sort that out. You do have to be very careful with them as they have switched mode power supplies which carry high voltages. I'd ask another repairer for an opinion.
thanks thinman...I found a yamaha spares supplier, the power board is £85. I have another repair man/amp builder who I may also see about it.
I Don't know about that particular mixer but I regularly contact yamaha for spares and they are very helpful and their parts and shipping prices are reasonable. I have done this as trade and none trade so unless something has changed in their policies it sounds like your repair man doesn't want the work. You can reach them on the phone at 08448111116 I think you should ask them a. About other repair places, b. If they will repair and c. Cost of new board.
I called Yamaha...they won't deal directly with 'callers' so I wondered how where you able to deal direct with them? They have provided me with a contact number to a company called Sontec who sell Yamaha parts, however,I've now called and requested twice for parts pricing but they haven't sent the promised information.

Yes, all to do with arm/wrist/hand position. You need someone to watch (you playing). I'm cautious to comment without knowing how you hold the bass. My double bass tutor of many years ago got me to raise my (fingerboard playing ) elbow a little as I was getting lazy and dropping it towards the bass body which was cramping the wrist, causing some pain. The smallest change of your hand position will probably help. Maybe try dropping the elbow a little and relaxing the hand overall anyway.

Bad news on my Yamaha EMX 312 PA powered mixer amp. It suddenly switched off at sound check though had tested fine the day before, (luckily the band had a spare amp). The cost of repair for the internal power board/supply is far higher than buying the same new Yamaha amplifier off the high street at £320! Repair man says he isn't able to buy direct off Yamaha, ( it s a Yamaha thing!). I guess most of this type of powered mixer amp are built along the same lines, Yamaha's apparently have a weird internal earthing that allows power through only when the unit is completely assembled (sounds safe) as my repairman found on a previous Yamaha job. Anyone had this particular amp problem and resolved it?
You have to have it set at 'Past 24 hrs' or 'Past week' etc. If you have it set at 'new since my last visit' you may see nothing at all.
gjones....yes I've tried all of those settings, thanks.
Absolutely fine on old iPad2, sorry to hear you're having issues. Are you using the full or mobile version? I use full on the tablet and mobile on the phone, no problems with either platform.
icastle....I was on my ipad for a few days, now trying on the home iMac but still no result. I signed out for 15 minutes then signed back in but its the same so I'll go through the other helping comments below.

Replacing Fender Aerodyne Fender Japan Tuners with...?
mybass replied to mybass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Surely one of the Gotoh ranges would be good. Are you going lightweight? If so something in Gotohs Resolites range would be good,
Not really. I believe it has Gotoh tuners factory fitted and they are okay but not the best. There are better ratio tuners about and its the screw hole placement that I'm trying to get exact as I didn't want to drill new holes while leaving existing holes showing. -
