1.
Some of you may recall me putting the feelers out for a beat up old bass body, and I managed to get my hands on one. It's not quite a P-bass, I was told it was a Squier Bullet bass (thankfully not the short scale version), but in any case it'll do the job. I'm going to pair it with a Mighty Mite ebonal fretless Precision neck, probably stick a Badass II on it and use Schaller BMFLs again. Dunno about pups yet. So, to sanding! That's 1 hour's work. This is going to take a while. Anyway, the whole point of this otherwise completely unremarkable and somewhat straightforward project is that my sister is going to decorate the bass. A graduate of Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, she jumped at the chance to collaborate on this project. Some examples of her work: I wonder what she'll come up with. Whatever it is, I fancy a repeat of the design on the headstock as well for good measure As ever, will keep you up to date on developments.
Did the same as many years ago. A long job isn't it! I ended up just sanding down. The bright yellow sandpaper found selling in rolled lengths about 4" wide is rough but effective. 3M paper lasts pretty good. A friend gave me some Canadian made sandpaper once which lasted ages. Maybe a light wood veneer on the front might finish it off nicely.
  2.
I have a black 5 string ABM bridge unit if you're interested - the finish is a little worn but it works fine. You could get a Steinberger headpiece off Ebay which allows you to anchor the strings either using an allen key and nut, or using DB end strings.
Thanks for the reply Crazykiwi. I need a 4 string setup for this next bass. Must look at ABM's site to see what style they do. I take it your bridge is a single unit 5 string?
  3.
Hi Mybass, You could try ordering thru Enrico at www.woodandtronics.com in italy, other wise maybe check out ABM or Status. My last order with ETS took a while to get to me. Cheers, Robbie.
Thanks Robbie, I may look into the Italian connection though the Status link is looking easier. Cheers, Pete
  4.
You will have difficulty getting ETS hardware at the moment as production seems to be a bit erratic. I have read of few threads that say they have went under but others that say he is still in business.
Thanks Skelf, I'll keep my ear to the ground on that one. Seems though that Status may be the answer.
  5.
No idea for ETS. Status hardware can use normal strings (status-graphite.com), as can ABM (from Allparts.co.uk) though.
Thanks Alpha, I thought Status only used the double ball end system. I'll make enquiries there as it could be much better to use "local" supplies. cheers
  6. Would anyone know where I could get ETS (German) hardware from in the UK. Specifically for a headless design. I'm looking for headless bass hardware that will use normal single ball end strings. I got the idea from a previous post on a previous bassworld site but cannot find that builders post any more. Cheers all.
  7.
Hey Cail thanks for your kind words glad to see someone else is digging the single cut vibe UPDATE: i got a bit more done today on the control cavity and back plate as well as some work smoothing out the heal and lower horn there still not where i want them ut better than they were (u can click these thumbs for larger images) Thats a fine piece of dedicated work. I was looking at the backplate. Matching piece but how? Did you cut a veneer off that half body section before routing the control cavity on the body and then use the veneered piece to make the matching backplate? 8. Top man, good communications, nice to do business with.
  9.
I'm thinking of installing some noiseless pickups in my Jazz, and am looking at these: Fender Samarium Cobalt Noiseless (SCN), Fender Vintage Noiseless, and Nordstrand NJ4SVs. Have BCers tried any of these?
I have a near new pair of Bill Lawrence jazz pickups for sale at £40 +post. Have a look at Bill's site www.billlawrence.com ( 3 letter l's in there!) where he goes in depth about his pickups. Bill designed the pickups for Fender that I have on my Roscoe Beck bass's. These that I have for sale are noiseless, have multiple magnets in them and the camber of the fingerboard/strings is followed by the centre magnets curving up towards the centre strings. I have a for sale post on this site for them with photo so contact me if you want further info. cheers, Pete
  10. I think the guy at Watford valves is a "tube head" bassist himself.
  11. Wow, sorry to see that damage, looks like it has been caught out by a forklift or something. Jeez, I cannot look at that photo too much! As a part time luthier, I can envisage how much pressure is needed to snap a neck with truss rod in it. Perhaps you can get a pro luthier to write a "report" on how difficult it must have been for a parcel force worker to snap the neck with their bare hands. In other words, this was done by mechanical means and then a blind eye turned on it. The worry is now sending basses off myself. Probably best to buy a cheap hard case and encase it in toughened steel and titanium! I know when sending stuff thru the PO I can insure over the "usual" amounts by paying extra. As I have yet to try parcel "Force" (!!!) to send stuff, I will surely check out all the print.
