MarkBass UK maintenance - help needed please!!
mybass replied to kolossusuk's topic in Amps and Cabs
https://www.realelectronics.co.uk I’ve usually got through on phone okay but I seem to remember the lady who answered asked me to send an email with the info/details of work. I’ve come across a few companies that are currently putting out this ‘difficult to address business is not as usual’ attitude so we have to hang in there best as possible……..good luck but check what they may require to do and the cost. -
Visit the shop again, face to face can work.
-
Terrible shop, they used to use super glue to repair acoustic guitars!
-
Did they say why they were replacing the pots if there was no apparent fault, without informing you first?
-
If not already stated…….PLi is a good cover but the person(s) contracting you/us should also have it in place methinks. A bit like a recent gig when our band was asked to have Pat test certificates on our gear, my response was ‘as long as the client has everything Pat tested too’.

Try using as much treble as possible off the bass and a bit more than usual on the amp, then ‘scrape’ with you nails along a string nearer the bridge area and use the cab control to see if there is any difference … if not then I’d check the connection to the tweeter/horn hasn’t fallen off inside the cab, taking off one of the carry handles if possible because they do drop off sometimes!

There are at least a couple of 'speakon' plugs that lock different to each other...Your speakon picture on here may help.

Yes Val and Richard and for a while now with me and various drummers.

Anyone catch Jess Hayes with her band in the Kashmir stage? I recorded her EP last year, Jess is a mighty fine singer/songwriter in the rock stream of music following her mum and dad's footsteps... who have a band 'Bad Influence' that I work in.

JJ pups - positioning on a bass and in relation to each other?
mybass replied to warwickhunt's topic in Repairs and Technical
I'm not fully aware why the original Fender pups were placed in that original position, whether 'scientific' exploration or simply experimenting with different sounds from different placement along the body. On my self build I generally unless requested, prefer a closer positioning of jazz pickups than Fender and slightly closer to the foot of the bridge. I also bring the P pickup closer to the bridge. Look at Dingwall model with 3 pickups, looks a little overkill but it likely gets all of the Fender type pickup areas covered. The further forward/towards the neck the pickup is, the less 'attack/tightness' string sound is detected whereas nearer the bridge more attack but less 'body', hence two pickups (or 3!) better than one. I also sometimes angle my jazz pups so theres another different look to consider eh? -

Any shim will change the angle and Fender bass owners used to stick a piece of 'lollipop' stick in the neck pocket to raise the neck a little and help with the string height/action/playability. Shims of various thickness can be bought online (Ebay or Stewmac USA). Or....if the look doesn't bother you, route or drill out a channel in the body (and pickguard) to facilitate access to the truss rod. Heaps better than unscrewing the neck all the time.

Is it *wrong* to swap between French and German bows?
mybass replied to Jakester's topic in EUB and Double Bass
What reason? Play which is easiest. In the classical world it may be deemed ‘inappropriate’ to play both bows due to possible ingrained old ‘rules of the orchestra’. I’ve not played my DB for many years. I suffered the frustration of (trying) to use the French style smaller frog bow. I bought a cheapo German one recently but haven’t attempted it yet. It’s interesting how you found reverting to the German one made that piece of music easier to play. However, there is also the question of how much rosin on the bow is the ideal and possibly which make of rosin is best for your bow, style, strings, bass. Good luck. -
I did take my bass back to Neville Whitehead a couple of times to have the radius/ curvature flattened out, it was too much for an electric bass. Unfortunately, that refit and subsequent ‘invetsigations’ into bass guitar led me into design and building basses, much nail biting, cursing and happiness has ensued!

I used to bow my Gibson EB3 via a (Roland maybe) space echo way way back in the day!
-
I think his was the first and maybe mine was the second that Neville converted.
-
Looks like an old bass too….many years ago a DB repairer called Neville Whitehead who lived around the corner from the original Wal Bass workshop up in High Wycombe was fitting ‘ex’ DB fingerboards onto Fender basses. I saw a bass being prepared for bassist Dil Katz, fancied one myself and Neville replaced one onto my P bass. It sat all the way up to and partially around the P bass pickup…..yep, you couldn’t play it up there! I eventually cut the over length back.

I’m not so sure these are router ‘marks’. I thought I could see in close up, the wood grain of the neck slot mark. A router head is much wider than these marks.

Hand , arm, wrist exercises - advice please
mybass replied to Waddycall's topic in Theory and Technique
Try and find a really good Osteo/Osteologist…..I’ve seen an excellent one for years in NE Hampshire. We often have injuries or pain that affect or can be affected by other parts of our bodies skeletal network. A doctor may get an X-ray done to see if there is any ongoing bone or scar problem and therefore may be able to refer you for NHS physio. An Osteopath may well see something else needs ‘fixing’ to help that knuckle problem. Good luck. -
Difficult to tell from 'out here' as a viewer but I think the bridge is slightly off centre itself....I'm trying to gauge this by the way the strings are positioned over their individual bridge pieces. Looking at the D string of where the bridge has the channel for that bridge part, it just looks slightly to left (in the pic) of the centre pickup pole pieces. Also the edges of the bridge unit don't appear to 'line up' with the bridge pickup edges. Can you put a straight edge ruler from the centre of the bridge to the pickup's central pole pieces and also the outsides of bridge to the bridge pickup and see what the alignment shows up there.

Aaaargh....forgot I had an old Peavey cable tester in the 'stores', I should have tried that first....will now keep it out of storage!!
-
Cut the ends off and re-solder…..I found a single strand of the earth woven wrap was causing intermittent volume drop, took weeks to spot it on the well used cable, now working as new.

Vanished places where I wish I had gigged
mybass replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
I missed all those early clubs (bit of a long trip from NZ!) but have played later versions of these clubs…and Fillmore West….where the ‘smoke’ off the audience went totally against the huge lettering on the wall saying ‘No Smoking’ ! -
You will very likely not be allowed to carry the carry on board, unless you can purchase another seat for it. I have in the past had my bass inside its soft case and then inside the wheeled SKB ‘flight case’ with locks on it. Good luck.
