1. Heads up to anyone interested - there's a Maruszczyk strap for sale in the classifieds...
2. True Al, the drooling is entirely based on specs/performance. Re: 2-way vs 3-way designs, more components doesn't mean a better cab. My understanding is that the fewer sound sources you have in the cab the better. The ideal scenario would be to have a completely full range signal being produced by a single driver but that's very difficult to do as it would require one perfect driver taking on all sonic duties, hence the compromise of a 2 or 3-way design. I probably haven't explained this all that well and there are points I'm sure I've missed but that's my limited understanding based on having read posts by such folk as Bill Fitzmaurice, Phil Starr, Stevie and others. Having said all that I'm looking into a new 3-way cab from TKS at some point in the future Actually, back on the subject of Yamaha cabs, one thing I love about their design is the rounded sides. To the more knowledgeable among us, are rounded sides a disaster in bass cabinet design?
3. If Alex put a load of effort into making his cabs look a bit cooler I'm sure people would be drooling even more than they already are but I fear that the offer of nicer finishes would mean a significant price hike which, frankly, I don't know if I'd be prepared to pay. As it is a simple silver cloth grille is a £40 add-on. Saying that, how hard would it be to offer 2 or 3 simple but classy tolex options? Or forgetting tolex, since the infrastructure is already there for making grille cloths, how about more cloth styles? I dunno. Anyway, there are cab builders out there already catering to the more stylish among us, coming in at a very similar price bracket to the Barefaced stuff and with similar performance.
4.
These??: https://www.andertons.co.uk/p/GTHR10/combo-amps/yamaha-thr10-compact-guitar-amp They're only 10w.
Ha. Yup. As Daz says, they sound surprisingly good! I got a genuinely nice sound even in a busy shop. Admittedly I was playing a five string and there was definitely some steep drop off happening around the low D on the B string and below. To be fair, for its size, I expected that. I'm actually considering buying a used one off the 'bay but I'm kicking myself for missing out on a deal on a PJB Double Four sold by Musashimonkey of this parish a while ago - I hear they deal with the low B quite well. No inbuilt effects like the Yammy THR10 though...

Played one of these in Yamaha Music the other day. Very nice bass and very nice tone! GLWTS.
6. The other day I visited the Yamaha Music shop in Central London with a friend so he could check out their selection of electro-acoustic nylon strung guitars. We were assisted by one of the staff who plugged my friend into one of their THR5 tabletop amps. Sounded good. My friend was noodling away and I was knob-twiddling on the little amp when along comes a random guy who starts switching effects on our amp. I was a tad speechless at the balls of this guy to just walk over and start messing with an amp that we were obviously playing through. Anyway, it quickly transpired that he was Martin Adam, product marketing manager for Yamaha Europe! He just happened to be in store that day checking things out and we were in th right place at the right time. He spent a while chatting about the THR5 amps and after a while I asked if there was a model that'd be any good for bass. His eyes widened and he walked over to another part of the showroom where the THR10 amps were set up. I picked up a BB1025 off the wall (home sweet home) and jammed away for a bit talking tech all the while with Martin. Once I finished jamming we took a wander around the rest of the shop floor and I caught sight of these THR amp heads and THRC cabs: There was a stack consisting of one single channel head and two of the 212s on display which looked stunning. I then spent about 10 minutes attempting to convince Martin to start developing bass versions of this amp series. I know it would take a load of new R&D on their end - apparently the heads are based on pretty cutting edge valve emulation tech and building good bass cabs requires more brains than building good guitar cabs - but if anyone has the money to do it it's Yamaha. I want to see this handsome rig available to us low enders! Is it just me that thinks these heads and cab are aesthetically gorgeous??
7. Just browsing through Thomann and stumbled upon this: https://www.thomann.de/gb/mooer_red_truck.htm?ref=search_prv_7 It's very much a guitar oriented pedal but seems to offer a lot more control per effect than the Tech21 FlyRig or Valeton equivalent. Now they just need to release a bass version!
8. If you're at all considering going down the separate head/cab route, there are a couple of Genz Benz heads for sale in the classifieds here at the moment for decent prices I have zero affiliation with either of the sellers BTW, despite one of them having an alarmingly similar name to me!
9. I literally have one of these sitting next to me as I type but with no means of accurately measuring it! Shambles. What are you looking to fit into it? For what it's worth I currently have a Yamaha BB1025x snuggled inside, which is a rather large bass both in body size and in headstock size. It's pretty snug at the headstock end actually as the tuners are massive and being a fiver they stick out of both sides of the headstock...but it just about fits. Hope this helps!
10. Adding my 2p worth, and following on from what has already been said... The super twin isn't particularly coloured, neither is the BH800 (I own one myself) so chances are the tone you're hearing is predominantly the bass itself. It seems the precision sounds just fine whereas the jazz isn't quite right to your ears - my suggestion is simply not to be afraid of turning knobs. Whether on the amp head or on the bass. It might even be worth getting a preamp pedal with the EQ dialled in fine tuned to get the J sounding how you want. Then just stomp the EQ on/off when switching basses. I'd use my MXR m81 preamp pedal for this exact purpose. Ultimately, in my opinion, knobs are there to be turned so explore what's possible.
11.
Nice one, thanks for that, yes, I am a GK fan, had a 700rb and 1001rb and the tiny double bass combo, the mb150. Love the sound, especially the low mid control but haven't tried the new class d stuff. On a slightly different note, why are the, although awesome, GK mb150 combos so expensive relative to the new stuff? I also love Gen Benz but during my 4 year sabbatical as a drummer they went bust while I wasn't looking I have patience as I've got to sell all my drum gear to fund new bass and combo
From what I hear, the GK class D stuff is well respected and seems to be solid. Re: Genz Benz, fear not. Their spirit continues in the form of Genzler amplification. Give them a search. Genz Benz stuff often pops up for sale here though so if you like the sound it'll be a cheaper option than the new stuff.
12. You might have read these already but in case you haven't: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/gk-combo-shootout-mb210-vs-mb212.650362/ https://www.talkbass.com/threads/gallien-krueger-mb212-ii-report.968217/
13. I haven't played through this specific combo but have lifted the 210 version in a shop and it was pretty damn light. Can't comment on what it sounded like but any half decent 2x12 combo or cab should handle the low B at decent volume without complaint. I guess it boils down to whether you like the "GK sound"? If so then I imagine you can't go too far wrong here. For the price you'll pay for a new one though you could bag yourself a deal on a good quality used amp stack here or on various Facebook marketplace groups. That may require patience.
14. The new TC Hall of Fame 2 has a shimmer setting using some of the octave up algorithms from the Sub n Up. Check out this demo from around 6:10 onwards - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YdoVPpkm1k8 Shows the MASH switch controlling the shimmer intensity in real time.
15. Ah, that would make sense. Good thing they're dirt cheap and easy to find replacements for.
16. I have a Comfort Strapp and love it. Has anyone compared these to the Neotech straps? Based on construction alone I suspect the Comfort Strapp is probably sturdier feeling and perhaps less bouncy. Might be worth trying out? I think The Bass Gallery in London usually have them in stock. Edit: seems Bass Direct also have them in stock. Also, I've just been drooling over those Maruszczyk straps - they're gorgeous!
17. Glad to hear you're enjoying the BigHead Andrew! BTW, I bought mine new about a year and a half ago and it came with feet too. How old is yours Danny?
18. This is reassuring to hear as I love Hercules stands and buy them pretty much exclusively, whether it's instrument stands, mic stands etc. They're solidly built and now I know they'll be easy to deal with should something go wrong. Cheers for the heads up folks.
19. I once had to learn 4/5 songs in an afternoon for an impromptu recording session later that day. Thing is, I was told about it when I didn't actually have my bass to hand, so I had to kind of learn the songs through listening on YouTube only until I could get home and physically play them. None of the songs were all crazy difficult and I have a good ear so it all turned out fine in the end. Not perfect, but certainly passable. Looking back it was really quite a fun experience.
20. Of my two main basses, I own one for tone and feel, the other for utility. My Yamaha BB1025x gives me the sound in my head plugged straight into the amp, while my Ibanez BTB33 is very useful as a solo tool which I tend to douse heavily with effects.
21.
Testing each component one at a time is the only way to go!
This. It's laborious as hell but a necessary evil. The feeling of satisfaction afterwards is worth it! Edit: also, just to be anal/thorough, is your power supply plugged into the same wall point as your amp?
22.
I wasn't bothered about the body wood; I chose my V7 for purely aesthetic reasons, as I love maple/pearl block necks.
I'm very much the same when it comes to choosing a bass. Couldn't care less what the body wood is unless it's a natural top with a nice grain/pattern, but body colour and fretboard are big factors for me. If a bass doesn't sound the way I want it to I'll blame the pickups and preamp long before body wood.
23. Rich that looks great! Lovely colour/scratchplate too!
