  1. Yep. Love the new styling of the guitar cabs. Can’t see any reason why similar styling wouldn’t work with the existing bass cab range. Gives them an aesthetic which fits with the boutique price tag.
  2. I asked about the stock strings over on Talkbass and was told they’re D’Addario EXL Nickels. If and when I change strings I’ll be sticking a set of the exact same ones on again. I think there’s something in the action being just a touch higher than normal for me , plus the strings being nice and malleable under the fingers. Makes the bass very fun and responsive to play.
  3. These are absurdly good basses. I haven’t played mine in a little while but just plugged it in and was blown away all over again. The neck is sooo nice, the pickups have *that* tone and the preamp is very well designed. Even the stock strings are lovely. I’ve just said this in the “Yamaha BB Mega Thread” but my 735a genuinely gives my Dingwall Super P a run for its money.
  4. Now there’s a bold statement! In other news, my Dingwall Super P is having some work done at The Gallery in Camden (replacing the original tone knob with a Tonestyler) so the BB735a has been promoted to “main bass” position. Just been playing it for the past half hour and my god - I’d forgotten how good it was. It still has the stock setup and strings as it played so well out of the box...and I’m in zero rush to change anything. The action is actually slightly higher than I would have it if I were setting it up myself but it just works! The Dingwall better watch its back I’m currently in the market for a passive 5 string Jazz and, to my shame, I was actually contemplating selling the BB to raise funds. Not gonna happen now. The Yammy is going nowhere in a hurry.
  5. This intrigues me as I feel the direct opposite about gloss necks. Playing them makes me feel like I’m wading through treacle! Goes to show, different strokes for different folks.
  6. Wise words. Just looked on Thomann and a 5 string set of medium gauge Sunbeams are £39.45
  7. This actually looks really bloody good!
  8. Bloody hell. That ain’t cheap! Wow...
  9. Will do! But everything I’ve heard already indicates it may be hard to go back to a “normal” tone control once I’ve used the Tonestyler
  10. I just ordered a Tonestyler 10 from Bass Direct and I’m gonna have it installed in my Dingwall Super P5! Looking forward to it
  11. Just bought some 5 string Maruszczyk Nickels from Bass Direct. Nicely priced at £25. Shame Maruszczyk don’t seem to sell their pickups separately.
  12. Which of the two had more of a hollow, woody bark to them in your experience? I’ve spent the morning listening to Maruszczyk’s YouTube demos to try and compare between the Häussels and M’s own pups. Both sound great and definitely in the same ballpark for me.
  13. Ah, makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up!
  14. Ah, yes, sounds like you may be correct here re: Häussel pups! I didn’t see any logo or branding on them so assumed they were Maruszczyks. Might have to get me some Maruszczyk strings now. Thanks for the heads up.
  15. Just to add that in the past, when using the Maruszczyk configurator online, I’ve always spec’d my fantasy builds with “upgraded” hardware and pups at extra cost. My experience today has convinced me there’s zero need to do so. If the bass already feels and sounds that great with the in house parts then why bother spending more money?? I should also say that the strings (presumably Maruszczyk’s own brand) and setup were sublime too. It was genuinely effortless to play. It’s been said before but setup makes such a difference when picking up a bass in store and can easily make or break a sale. I’ve oft walked into a music shop ready to spend money and been turned off buying great basses “on paper” because the strings and setup are poor.
  16. Played a Jake L4pj today at The Bass Gallery. Finished in a rich metallic ocean green colour with a white guard - more green than “ocean turquoise” but certainly in that ballpark colour-wise Frankly, I was blown away by the playability and the SOUND. My god. Lots of output, proper barky Precision tone with the P pup solo’d and was able to blend the J in to taste with the passive V/V/T wiring. And - very importantly for me - a tone pot which was useable across the entire sweep of the knob. To top it all off it weighed next to nothing too as it’s a chambered construction. Sub - 8lbs! It felt like it had rolled fingerboard edges too. Hardware/pickups seemed to be of the standard Maruszczyk variety and all looked and felt top notch. Suffice to say if the shop wasn’t closing I could have sat with it for a good while longer...at under a grand I had to give my wallet a serious pep talk.
  17. They’re being discontinued already?! That’s mad. I actually played one today in @thebassgallery and very much enjoyed it. I can confirm that there was absolutely zero “relicing” on the neck whatsoever, until the headstock began. Played really nicely and sounded great through an Eich head and 112 cab - proper P thump.
  18. Yeah they’ve definitely shaved off a bit of bulk here and there. Looks fantastic. I’m a bit jealous
  19. This is lovely. Not sure I’ve seen one of these used before!
  20. I do love me some Anderton’s. They’ve always been great for me.
  21. +1 to all of the above. So much to like in that photo!
