1. I've already posted elsewhere but realised I hadn't posted here, so: Currently I'm in Oxford (for the last 20 years) and was in Dundee and Edinburgh before that, playing jazz in various bands, both bass (when possible) and guitar (badly). The last one was all scientists and that folded a decade or more ago when we lost the pianist, trumpeter and saxophonist to new research contracts elsewhere. I've not played since then (too many other demands on my time, such as fencing) but I'm thinking that it's about time to get back into practice. Perhaps in another few years I may get some more gigs, but even if not it would be nice to play for personal enjoyment.
2. Apologies for the delay - it seems I'm not getting notified by email of responses to threads here. Indeed, "nice, but too expensive" is what I normally hear. ;-) As to the truss rod I don't think it does have one but I'd have to check, which I can't do at the moment. AFAICT it wouldn't need one, though.
3. Very nice! In addition to that, and an S/H offer above, I also found some promising components on Ebay as suggested by EliasMooseBlaster. Furthermore, a colleague mentioned that there's a local company who will do setups/assembly and so on, so it seems as if something will be available eventually. Assuming, of course, that there is someone out there who would find my upright of use to them!
4. Thanks for your replies - I'll take a look a the various suggestions above, though I suspect that the basses in the classifieds here will sell before I am able to pursue them. Those Warwick basses don't look too bad, though. I'm not much of a fan of the look of the fret markers and prefer the position of the dots on the instruments I've had, so I'd probably want to stick with the same format.
5. Years ago I owned a budget copy of a Fender precision (I don't recall what brand), fretless, and with only dots on the side of the neck as markers. Eventually I sold it to buy a fancy electric upright, but now find the latter too big to store and move around my small house. So, I fancy switching back to a fretless bass guitar, assuming I can sell the upright to pay for it. Does anyone have any recommendations for low-mid priced fretless electric basses without the fret markers? I've been looking around for something like the first fretless I had (though I'd prefer a Fender Jazz, Gibson SG or Flying-V body) and can't seem to find much.
6. Once again I'd like to try listing a Starfish Designs electric upright bass/guitar hybrid. It was made c. 2001 IIRC and cost me around £1500 then, I think. At the time* they made a fretless bass guitar that could also be put on a stand and bowed - this one is a one-off variant of their standard model with 5 strings and a longer 38" scale. As a result it's too large and heavy to play as a guitar (at least for me) and has to be played on the stand. There's one magnetic pickup and an active piezo pickup in the bridge as well. I've put some pictures here, in addition to the one below: Starfish Bass The sale would include the instrument, stand and case. There was a bow but that needs replacing. The case is solid though there's a little tarnishing on some of the metalwork. The instrument is in west Oxfordshire and I would very much recommend trying it if interested. I might well be willing to discuss offers. * I think they only do harps now.
7. I originally posted this elsewhere but it was suggested that this would be a better forum. I've got a custom upright bass made by Starfish Designs, c. 2000 IIRC, which I unfortunately don't get chance to play any more. So, I thought I might put it up for sale to free up some space and put it in the hands of someone who might make some decent use out of it. A friend suggested I try an ad on this forum. Here are a few pictures: https://dl.dropboxus...bass/index.html It's got a 38" scale length, 1x magnetic and 1x active piezo pickup (the latter in the bridge). There's a compartment for a 9v battery on the back for the active pickup. It can be bowed but the bow is knackered and a new one will be required. For playing it sits on a stand, which would be included along with the case. It's in Oxfordshire. Please let me know if you have any questions.
