South East Bass Bash No.10, Surrey, Saturday 24th September 2016
bigjimmyc replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
I will be there if humanly possible, might bring some lefty love! -
I just bought a nearly-new BH800 to replace my ABM500 (thanks traders!), and so now I can tell you that the new amp/cab combination is AWESOME! Much cleaner sound than the ABM, punchier too. Can't wait for rehearsal tomorrow to test the additional headroom. My rig has gotten smaller and smaller but the sound is just the opposite. JC
Based on what's around I'd say maybe £800 is a touch high, maybe low £700 would be about right (from the lefties i've seen come up anyway). Defintely not just a funk machine though, the first Rage Against the Machine record was recorded with a Stingray! Also Brian Marshall from Alter Bridge is a fan of the Stingray 5 (amongst many other people). If you've got nothing to loose, go try it out!
Thanks mate! Will let you know how I go on. Love RATM!

Hi lefties. A bloke near me is flogging a 2005 US Musicman for £800 including the hard case. Condition is apparently good except for a fingernail sized chip on the bottom of the body. I fancy it but have never played one before. I play finger style heavy rock - is it more of a funky slapping machine? Can anyone offer advice on whether this is good value or not? Cheers Jim

Cheers for all the input. I suppose I was hoping for a "practical" solution rather than go buy another pedal (or new pickups which would be even more expensive!). Just wondering though, how best to calibrate the solution? I'm guessing it's by ear for most of us, but is there a better way?
-
Yeah - I think you've got a point there S.P. I looked at fx or channel switching to solve it. Small fly for the ointment though - I just changed my amp to a TC BH800. Much simpler than my ABM 500, but with tone print stuff to figure out. Part of the justification is to scrap my pedalboard altogether! Perhaps this will save me (when it arrives).

Hi all. I'm looking for a little advice from the category of "I'm sure I'm not the only one...." I play three basses across our current setlist: -5 string Peavey Millennium (passive) tuned to standard -5 string Peavey Millennium (passive) tuned to Bb -4 string Tobias (active) tuned to D I bought the Peaveys thinking there would be mileage in having identical instruments - boy was that a big assumption - but it turns out that the output an tone differs substantially between the two. The Toby actually puts out significantly lower signal that the Peaveys (yes, I have changed the battery!). So this is the problem: how best to compensate for different levels when changing basses? I've tried a few things: - obviously fiddling the input gain on my head is the first one, but not ideal during a gig. - changing pickup height - kicking in a compressor I don't tend to use the volume and tone on the bass. Set to full and leave alone! Anyone come up with a better idea? There are no dumb answers to this question, so please give me both barrels! Jim

I think I see your point. You have the new driver and are hoping for more power by swapping out the existing driver. There's some mileage in this if (a) you're not going to use a second cab and (b) this 600W 4ohm driver is a big improvement on the existing 300W 8 ohm one. It will allow you to use your amp's full output capability. However, not all cabs are "compatible" with all drivers. Thermal efficiency isn't the only variable which could scupper your plan, but the only way to know if you've got a winning combo (excuse the pun) is to try it. I would! Tons of advice available here. I suggest you post as much info as you can about the amp, the drivers, the cab itself etc if you want to leverage the assembled brains.

Hiya. Time to part with my little used but still lovely Jackson guitar. I've had it for more than 10 years but I believe the vintage is early 90s. This is a good Japanese model, with a Jackson licensed Floyd Rose. The neck is wafer thin, and the action is still amazing. No nicks or damage worth mentioning. Everything works perfectly and it makes all those guitar noises! Collection in Hampshire or delivery by arrangement and depending on the agreed price! Open to bass-related trades or other offers! Please purchase my lovely English-made ABM 500 which is in great nick and very recently serviced by Raphael Sutcliffe. Valve preamp, classic tone shaping malarkey, no faults or niggles, looks awesome too! Genuine cover included. Open to offers, located in Hampshire and I'm prepared to ship or deliver depending on the price we agree! Cheers Jim

Sounds dicey. Forcing it in would worry me about getting it out again! Also, filing the bridge has to be a last resort - probably plated isn't it? Good luck!

Martin - I almost reached for the soldering iron, but the keyboard was closer! Found this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/lead_foot_fs2.htm and this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CLC9CH2 ...and came to the conclusion that my skills should remain retired. Given that these come with the cable hard-wired I don't think I can go far wrong, do you? Cheers Jim

Hi all. I'm not that new now, so I guess my intro is overdue. I'm based in Hampshire, but originally from Yorkshire. I've been playing (badly) for 30 years and am currently in a deafening rock covers band where most of the members are younger than my gear, never mind the setlist. I'm a lefty, so any time I see a decent bass I buy it. This has become a proper eBay gumtree habit which is not sustainable! Hope to meet up in September. Jim

Good work! This is the info I need!! Were the switches the latching type? I'm guessing yes to that one. Cheers!

Appreciate all the input on this thread. However, probably time to put it to bed now. I decided to flog the cabs and bought a BF 410. Very pleased with how this worked out - just much more handling from this cab. I had the ABM serviced too, and it seems happier. For what it's worth, I suspect that it played up a bit due to standing on the cab at high volume. With it located elsewhere I had no trouble. Cheers all.

+1 for this discussion. I forgot my earplugs last night (rehearsal) and am still ringing. So who wants to recommend their favourite earplug solution? I've got some but I can't recommend them cos I've forgotten where they came from!

Hi. I've got an ABM500 EVO II here with no footswitches. On this model, you need two 2-way switches for sub/valve and eq/shape. I've got a search out on eBay for the FS-2, but they don't seem to come up much. Oddly the 4-way FS-4 does. Do I really need 2x2-way or is there an aftermarket or DIY solution? Maybe I could get a 4-way and hack it up? This can't be rocket science and I'm not afraid of the soldering iron! All ideas welcome! Cheers Jim
