What new high-quality PA system for pub band?
crez5150 replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
The problem with the Bose system is that it was original designed for their pro-sound core market which is Hotelier trade. It was designed as a speech reinforcement unit for conference rooms and alike..... Then decided to market it into the mi arena.... I've heard it work well with acoustic acts but it's never gonna compete in a real life band situation -
I worked as a sound engineer for a while with a really good guy who hired loads of gear and also ran large PA's for touring bands. The first thing he ever told me was that you have to mic a kick drum for it to actually sound like a drum and not a dull thump. Of course, after that he told me a lot more stuff - if only I could have retained his 30+ years of live sound knowledge, lol.
I always wonder why bands do this.... they seem to roll all the top end off a bass drum and create some wooly 'wump' sound. No definition..... let's hear some click ;o) -
That's my point really. The EV's he is looking at are engineered to a price and there is a limit to their capability as a result. In this case the efficiency. I'm making no comment on the internals I can only see what is on the EV website. EV say the amps are the same power, are you saying that is a mistake? I'm not knocking EV whose stuff I generally like, I've just been singing through my EV mic, so much better than the SM58. I've recently said its a make to look at. One of the ways in which manufacturers can save a little on costs is to cut the size of the speaker magnets which has implications for bass power handling and efficiency. With DSP the excursion limiting is not going to damage the speaker but the bass will probably be more compressed with this model compared with the more expensive EV or some of the rivals. Most speakers in this market boast output figures around the 130dB mark, this one is 4db lower so maximum volume is going to be noticeably less. Since we don't know what maximum volumes the user will need or whether bass is going to be a problem I'm not making a recommendation but I just wanted the OP to know what to look for, and what they would get by buying the next model up or an alternative. 126dB is seriously loud but a tad short of current standards, it may sound lovely, you can send me one to test if you want I don't work for EV or anyone else .
Just because an amp RMS power rating is the same doesn't mean that the SPL figures will be. The thing with SPL figures is that most manufacturers do not give enough information as to how they are achieved. 130dB at what frequency/distance/period.... not many will give you true info on that. RCF and JBL give true figures.... EV and Dynacord also. Not many other manufacturers do though. As I said earlier its a completely new product... so new Amp module, speaker, cabinet.... new speaker baffle design.... completely different to anything else in the range. I'd suggest you go compare a ZLX 12P side by side with any other speaker on the market in this price range..... it will compete with the more expensive products easily in terms of clarity, SPL and efficiency. The bass extension on the 12P is quite something compared to the other manufacturers....
Just one man's experience here, but I bought an EV ZLX-12P active cab. It quickly developed a buzz/fuzz type of sound, but only when the cab was on it's side (in monitor position). The first runs of this model have something of a reputation for having a speaker lead touch the cone, which is what I assume was happening to mine. I sent it back for a warranty fix. It returned back, a month later full of loose rattling buts/bolts whatever !!! Not impressed with EV here. Thankfully Andertons were very reasonable and gave me a no quibble full refund.
Yep there was an issue with an early run where the cable to the illuminated badge on the front was too long by about 2 inches.... which meant that when oriented into the monitor position it laid against the speaker causing a vibration. This batch was recalled an customers offered either a replacement or refund if they were not happy. They are covered by a 3 year warranty so any manufacturing issues in that time would be covered. Interesting to hear that you had it returned with rattling bolts though....
Budget after disposals around the £750 mark....but happy to add stuff (sub etc) later. Those EVs do look blinding Crez...do you have personal experience of them?
Yeah I have.... Though I do work for EV so I would expect you to think me biased. For the money there is nothing that can touch them. A really good quality low cost active speaker. My advice is to go and have a listen at your local dealer..... They have become our best selling product which is amazing since it was only launched at the Messe this year.
Don't get too carried away by the power rating, if you look carefully the output in decibels is 126dB underneath is the ELX with the same power rating but 132db output which will be noticeably louder. The RCF Art 312 is rated at 400W but gives out 127dB. 126dB is pretty loud but this is obviously fitted with their less capable speakers compared with the elx112. If that is what you can afford then there's nothing wrong with that but just be aware of what is on offer and compare dB not watts. The great thing about all of these is the protection given to the speakers by having DSP, they should prove to be more reliable as you won't be able to overload them. I've not used the EV's but a lot of bands do use them round here and I've heard some nice sounds coming out of them, not sure they were these models though. you might find this interesting http://www.soundonso.../yamaha-dxr.htm and there might be reviews of some of the other offerings on the same site. All of these are going to sound much better than what you have. Make a short list and go and listen to them before choosing.
Couple of things.... it's a very different product to the ELX... thats got a different power stage, speaker and enclosure. ZLX is a completely brand new product in every respect. They are plenty loud enough for use on their own or as a mid/high top in a system. From every dealer we demo'd these too they all agree they give the RCF boxes a good run for their money. The RCF boxes are excellent but the EV ZLX are approx £120 per pair cheaper than the RCF units
Great! Verdine was one of my bass practice 'tutors' in that I sat and played along to him, copying some great licks. He's a wonderful bass player, even if (in my opinion) a bit tasteless when it comes to some of his solos on Youtube. I'll look forward to seeing him too. Gonna be a great show for bass players!
I agree.... listen to the songs and he's brilliant..... on his own its all over the bloody place.... how does that happen?? -

What new high-quality PA system for pub band?
crez5150 replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Amps and Cabs
Nobody needs 18" subs. One or two decent 12s would suffice. However if all you want to mic is vocals then just go for two middle of the road powered tops (Mackies or yamaha's as mentioned by JTUK would do nicely) and some nice reverb / delay. You'll be EQing out most of what a sub would cover anyhow. If you're only running vocals through a PA then anything spent over about £1k is a waste of cash in my opinion.
Really...... well I guess it depends on the type of pubs you play.... most of the ones we play you need to have a decent system and there's no way I'd go out with just a pair of 12" tops...... -
So, to clarify, having owned them and for whatever reason had to sell them, you would buy one again for £700? I always thought it was just fans that made it the stupid price it is, not actually based on the pedal! It was £85 new! Happy to admit i bought mine following a muse obsession, found that there are a million other factors defining Wolstenholmes sound and was completely disappointed. Then it developed a fault whilst I had it and sold it for around £150. 7 years on from selling mine, I would quite like one back, and may even pay in excess of £200 as it is good for the sounds it does, but £700? The cost of a decent second hand synthesizer? Or a second hand Roland setup? Or a pretty decent bass? Or Amp? Or a complete pedal board? I just don't get it, but then again I guess I don't need to, each to their own
I'd like not to have to pay £700 but I'm lucky enough to have two of them so if my stage unit does finally fail I have a back up...... If I was in the position where I needed one then I probably would pay the £700. I guess it's an exception considering the type of music my band plays
You're quite right. But I think that with our new drivers you could use two tops and a 2U rack with a class D DSP amp, plus whatever you use for monitors and that would be it. No need for subwoofers unless you're going very loud. If you need a subs we could make a single lightweight sub and build a 2U rack into it, thus making it effectively an active unit which will replace two typical active subs. However, we'd need to see how much bottom our drivers can bring when up on stands and thus losing the boundary reinforcement off the floor.
I'd like to believe the 'no need for subs' quote but I'd have to hear it. I think this is gonna be a relatively expensive system so I would have a good look at where you think you are going to sell this. Are you developing your own DSP and Amp or are you think of third party equipment and concentrate on the cabinets ? -

Ok... perhaps dire is a bit too strong.... but I don't rate them at all (just my opinion) there's far better to be had for a lot less money these days. They had them at the PLASA shootout last week and they were pretty underwhelming. Some of the DB technologies stuff was far better and for the same sort of money -

It all depends on your budget at the end of the day.... some people are happy with the said Mackies and to be fair for pubs its probably adequate. most of the pubs we get involved with we use two subs and two mid/high as we want a good full sound. small pubs we just use one sub. I'd definitely go active as it's less hassle and the weakest point in any pa system is always gonna be the cables..... small gigs we use 1 x dynacord Powermate desk thats man enough to drive 2 x 18 subs and 2 x 12+cd Med gigs we use 2 x active 18's with dynacord TS400 tops..... functions is much the same except we add another two subs.... Anything bigger than that we hire in a sound company -
YEah I'm sure he used a Stringray 5 for this..... Black with Black scratch plate
No, but we've been using Mackie SRM450's for years and they are excellent IMO, if a bit heavy. I'd be very surprised if anything Mackie makes is "dire", but perhaps folks can chime in with first-hand experiences. I have heard QSC K10's and they sounded excellent.
The older srm450 MK1's were pretty good.... but the later versions were a bit.... meh! If it were my money.... RCF, EV, Dynacord, -

yep ditch the Bose..... ok if you are an acoustic act but it's never gonna work well in a band scenario...... We've just gone down the Dynacord route...... -
I'm quite surprised to hear this. I would have though AV companies would be running digital systems over channel 38. That's what I'm doing with the ULX-D. Mind you, that's some seriously pricey system and locked to ch38 so not so good for worldwide usage. I'd be taking the DWZ in those cases that I work abroad. The DWZ is astonishingly good - given their history in wireless transmission, I don't understand why anybody would go for anything else in that price bracket. Given the fact that their 1/2 rackmount and corresponding pack can do encryption also its a bit of a no brainer. Battery life is good too. In fact, the whole range is great - even the mic with the interchangable heads.
Hotels and function houses get a bit funny when their systems start dropping out....... I visit around 10-15 AV rental and toursound companies a week and I'd say 90% are running UHF....

Plus sticking the PA Behind the Band is not going to help....... -
We've had the DWZ complain about RF intereference - yet it didn't actually have any impact on the performance. I know that some guys have stated that there can be issues in conference centres and hotel rooms with wireless networks... but I have to say, I've played a lot, a lot, a lot of these venues and I've never experienced any drops outs. (Mind you, we could be playing havoc with their network !)
It's exactly this...... this is why a lot of the AV companies haven't gone digital yet and are still using UHF (Though the New Sony DWZ range is changing that) it's not so much interference with your system, the line 6 unit was prone to knocking out wi-fi and other networks in hotels/venues if used within a certain range. If you're just playing down the pub it won't matter so much

Having owned most synth pedals on the market. The SB-1 is pretty hard to beat. Is it worth £700..... to me yes as there is no other pedal or pedals that can re-create that sound. If you don't use synth sounds very often the probably not so much. When Mark Bass brought their synth pedal out I had high expectations.... but it just didn't work for me. The tracking was dreadful and the sounds were thin. I was lucky enough to acquire two of the SB-1. One lives as new in its box..... just waiting for the market to peak ;o) The other thing to mention with the SB-1 is the tracking..... even tracks great on the low B so you get super sub from that if needed

Local band (The Rising) played a gig in Benfleet on Saturday night...... bassist was using a mesa boogie head and cab. The cab actually caught fire and had to be dragged out of the pub!! I'm hoping to see some pics today
