Weather report - cannon ball transcribe with B sharp?
Westenra replied to Westenra's topic in Theory and Technique
The Eb is noted in the key signature (as are Bb and Ab).
The opening riff is B C E C, I was questioning that natural E as diatonically it doesn't belong so would it be counted as a passing note? -
Weather report - cannon ball transcribe with B sharp?
Westenra replied to Westenra's topic in Theory and Technique
The phrase the OP is querying occurs in bar 6, the chord here is an Ab major chord in 2nd inversion (i.e. the fifth of the chord, the Eb, is played as the lowest note). An Ab major chord consists of the notes Ab, C and Eb so we can see that Jaco plays a chromatic approach note (B) to the major 3rd of the chord (C), then the perfect 5th of the chord (Eb), then another major 3rd (C) an octave higher than the first. This major 3rd then becomes the major 13th of the following chord in the next bar:
Just a quickie, maybe it's because I'm looking at it through novice eyes but there is no Eb, it's a natural E. I guess this is another chromatic note? -
Weather report - cannon ball transcribe with B sharp?

Thanks for the indepth answer guys, I'm so used to reading diatonically that it stuck out to me like a sore thumb. -
Get the source audio aftershock and then you've got distortion/overdrive/fuzz and many more at your disposal. Using the app too you can tone them right down so that they just had a slight edge to your tone.
The TC BG250 is perfect for your use case I'd say.
No where local stocks them yet. Tried a Fender Rumble 100 over the weekend and was surprised at the nice sound, preferred it over the GK MB200. They didn't have any of the GK combos in though but their other store stocks Markbass so I might make the trip.

Weather report - cannon ball transcribe with B sharp?
Westenra replied to Westenra's topic in Theory and Technique
That is a natural sign not a sharp sign .
Oh dear, at a glance on my phone it looked like a sharp! Thanks for the quick help, but this begs the question why would a B natural be in an E flat key? Shouldn't it be B flat? -
So testing my sheet reading skills I'm going to try and learn cannon ball by weather report, seems fitting as it was Jacos first time with them. Found a transcribe but the intro says to start on B sharp with the next note being C. The key is E flat and I'm having trouble with what note is suppose to be right. Playing the B sounds right but the person who did the transcribe is obviously more advanced than me and would've done it for a reason. Anyone want to help me out? So my jam buddy is moving away which makes my medium sized rig a bit wasted as for the foreseeable future I will just be playing at home, which is a new build flat with paper for walls.... As a result I'm looking at getting a little combo which I can use till someone complains about the noise and then switch to headphones. Been looking at the GK MB112, Markbass 121, TC BG250, even an Ampeg B100R (which i now regret selling), any others worth checking out? If they don't have headphones out it isn't a deal breaker as I could just get a little mixer but it would mean disconnected the speakers. Same as aux in for a metronome as I could just use line in. I like a warm tone, play finger style only on a passive bass (Yamaha BB424x), and not ruling out a head/cab set up either, maybe a Gk MB200.

New Yamaha BB basses at lots of price points
Have you tried a new one?
Nope, simply going on looks alone. I'd try a new one for sure but the older models have a certain appeal about them which I don't feel on the newer ones. -

Why Lower Stage Volumes Means Better Shows........
Westenra replied to paulmcnamara's topic in Amps and Cabs
After nearly a decade of going to hardcore shows I can safely say that loud/boomy volumes bands where I can't differentiate the instruments/vocals are not enjoyable. I know that's part of the scene, to be loud but still, if all I get is air thrusted in my face as a paying fan I'm not impressed. -
Vanderkley are better than Barefaced cabs, right?!
Westenra replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've got a Vanderkley 12EXT and a barefaced compact (15") and some days I prefer the BF and others the Van. Both top quality cabs and both look fantastic but the Van is just over half the size of the BF. The only downside to the BF is it can get a bit too boomy for my liking, but I figure that's down to the 15" driver. Downside to the Van is that it can be quite coloured, which like I said on some days I like and others I don't. -
Id be keen to buy, but i would like to try first. I have a 405 yamaha at the minute and its just about perfect in feel and balance. Im wondering would a set of better pups be a wiser spend. Anyone played a new fiver yet ?
Don't the original pups have weird screw locations which makes swapping pups more cosmetic? -

This guy is pretty popular on the old YouTube; https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3FzFK8wgl8Y I'm pretty sure all tracks are prerecorded and he's only playing for the camera which might answer the question - how does this guy mute with his right hand? In some of these scenes he's got no muting points on the A string, or am I missing something here? In other scenes he's using the thumb anchor but not always.

Tried a VM4 today and wasn't all that impressed, maybe it was the setup (thought the P pups were too low), or maybe it was the flat fingerboard, it just didn't feel right!
I love my passive California TT... it's got the thermo and vibration treatment and plays smoOoth! Sonds killer through a GK 700RB MKII... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7Mdi89ncAM
That sounded lovely, gonna hit the Gallery and GuitarGuitar this weekend to try them out, it's a shame most UK dealers are too far.

I doubt I could afford a full on brand new California so just sticking to the second hand market for now. All them photos are making me want to sell all my gear though and invest! Might have to take a trip somewhere and try one out in person, hopefully there's no more GAS when I have one in my hands!

Looks like those humbuckers found on their dimension bass range.

Whoa wasn't expecting such love for the Bergs! Could the VM emulate that jazz bridge solo'd sound? I'd personally like to have a "Swiss army knife" bass where it can be super modern, then with a twist, probably into passive mode, have a old school P sound and a solo'd jazz one too. What kind of amps are people playing them through? Caving into the Aguilar TH350 pressure!

Currently (quite) happy with my Lakland 44-60 but I've been seeing Sandberg's a lot recently and the VM4 has grown on me massively, what am I missing out on by sticking with the 44-60?
