I'd imagine just software. You can buy all kinds of sound sets, world percussion, jazz kits, big Phil Collins type kits so I imagine it'll be a load of those and functionality

It's a broad subject, this. Reading as a topic covers such a basic grasp as picking up licks, lessons and basic arps and scales from books and magazines all the way up to a full on chick corea score and beyond. For my money, I'm glad that I learned to read, because I'd like to know rather than be ignorant. Can you imagine not bothering learning to reverse in your car?

Learning to read isn't going to impart mystical musical wisdom. Nor will it get the girls, but what it does do is put you in a stronger position. As does learning a bit of theory. I have a bass player pal who almost falls asleep at the word "mode". That's a normal human reaction to an unknown quantity, to switch off. If only he would listen a little, he would realise that he's possibly already doing this stuff. If he could read, it would be an altogether quicker learning process

Oh, I hear that. My band are all self taught amateurs. I find myself having to explain basic things all the time. In fact I end up being mocked as a nerd

I've jumped ship from my usual rotosound to try these. 45-105 super bright nickel. I have to say, so far so good. Sound killer on my Precision, nice feel, good tension and more importantly, consistent tone across all strings. Anyone else a fan?

Who does the "work from home" thing, recording bass parts? What do you charge? Is there a union rate?

My Precision is a Squier affinity. Its the bottom of the range, but sounds so good. I don't know its pedigree but I am pretty sure it has aftermarket pickups and tuners. I've installed a wilkinson brass saddle bridge and a roughly done decal. That's for everyone else's benefit

I have to say, regarding the 60 or so years of pedigree that is claimed in the sales blurb, it doesn't really interest me. It certainly wouldn't sway me either way. I love the way P bass sounds, looks and feels.

That's brilliant! I've met a few grown adults that can't read or write English. I find that quite alarming. Not necessarily a drawback for them but it makes you think how much richer their lives could be if they could read a book, or a bass mag, the local paper or a set of instructions
