  1. Scale length, weight, string spacing, design, aesthetics. And the fact that you’ll look like an 80s sideman. I’ve tried playing them and it’s just not needed (for me). 5-string basses are like Land Rovers in that 90% if users will never need the extra capabilities.
  2. I had some lessons with the incredible Greg Cordez and an hour of his time for a few weeks transformed how I played. Would love to go back but I just can’t find the time at the moment.
  3. This book (for me) was a game changer and helped me to completely rethink playing guitar. I’m the end I had to stop as I’m gigging 70 times a year and have no spare time, but I’ll definitely get a copy in the future should I want to push myself forward. Book includes delivery for £10
  4. Any offers for this? It’s a really exquisite bass but it just won’t get used.
  5. When I had injured my arm (43 year old men probably shouldn’t play football two days before a gig) and I swapped to Golden Slaps which we met fine. I now play Orchestral Spiros now so slightly lower tension than Weichs and sound rich and full bodied.
  6. Makes sense. Whatever has happened it’s still, for me, is one of the best periods for Fender Precision necks.
  7. I was expecting a thick neck but then when I got to the shop it was really thin, which is what I wanted. It’s flats all the way and I’ll weigh tomorrow. Shop had it as 9.5 pounds and that feels right.
  8. And we’ll do it positively, constructively and without arguing or contradicting ourselves (as they do on other forums!)
  9. Did you buy it new? The interchangeability of Fender parts makes it hard sometimes. The accepted age is the newest part. While people love the idea of Fender having bins of parts and spent time cobbling together basses from bits, it’s nonsense. This was a factory with stock and inventory management systems and (for them) modern production techniques. This isn’t a workshop where they’d sometimes just build basses for the fun of it out of whatever parts were there. If you had the cash I’m sure they’d build you a custom order, but that’s about it. It was a production line process. It’s more likely that yours is a 69 body and bits and that someone has swapped the neck.
  10. Fascinating, thanks – as always – for your help and advice.
  11. Yes, you're right it has the longer pickup poles for A and D. The pre amp is epoxy coated which is interesting. Do you have any idea why they did that?
  12. Picked this up in a trade + cash deal. A light and all original 77 Stingray. Almost no marks or damage just a little wear on the body. Lightweight, pencil thin neck and plays as good as and Musicman I’ve ever played. Happy days!
  13. He’s no longer the worlds best bedroom bassist, he’s off on a global tour with a funny name. https://www.academymusicgroup.com/o2academyislington/events/1486781/bernth-tickets Not my thing but good luck to him. He seems like a lovely guy, good sense of humour and all that.
  14. Still for sale. Just bought something naughty and I need to recoup some cash.
  15. My wife bought me some really cool retro Fender T shirts. Admittedly you need to like Fender but if you do, they’re cool and cheap.
  16. True. Some experts here. You face a couple of choices here. You can try and achieve the highest price, which would require having detailed information on dimensions, strings, string height, structural condition, breaks, splits, damage and more. Or you could price it at a level where someone is happy to take a punt on it. The location of the bass is, unfortunately, against you. If it's been unplayed for 8 years and stored somewhere I'd say it'll need a complete overhaul in any case, which is never cheap and (in some cases) can be so costly it's terminal for the bass. Don't want to be negative and I'd help if I could but I have no idea of the used market, values and so on. Where are they in South Wales?
  17. This is really interesting. The stopper on the post is a standard 1" fitting and at 50p a time is hard an issue to cut off and replace when needed I guess.
  18. I still don’t get it. But the idea of a stripped down bass is cool.
  19. I bought a 75 reissue jazz neck on here from Chris at a reasonable price. Finding one like this would enable you to try it and have the same aesthetic while you find a genuine 4-bolt 70s neck.
  20. Physically injuring a cellist won’t win you many friends! People probably wondering why I bother, but I had to cancel a gig once as someone broke a carbon fibre end pin on my bass. (Hated that thing, far too much flex)
  21. To be fair, I’ve not played it long enough and anywhere other than my carpeted room. I’ve glued the stopper in place and it seems solid but you’re right that it will inevitably wear out over time. On the metal spike (which I’m still keeping and will always take to gigs) I use this: https://www.thomann.co.uk/wolf_super_endpin.htm?glp=1&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADuDMCX8xPj0-8EnpxBIKWRya_On0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlpLIpazpiQMVnJpQBh3oIAkwEAQYASABEgKIPPD_BwE
