I can’t see the images there on my mobile, but you might be right. The neck and body join look good and so does the scratch plate. Occam’s razor and all that.

1978 Gibson Ripper - Last drop – On Hold - *SOLD*

It’s a standard Siennaburst Fender. only obvious change is the knobs (as these would be strat ones) These were notorious for being absolute monsters in terms of weight. I had one that I reckon was over 5kg. Sold it for £750 in 2004. Reckon this is about £2000 to expensive. AB had a late 70s jazz on for £2k, for example.

Sad one this, but I didn’t play it… Here’s my 1978 Gibson Ripper bass in the glorious black. This sounds absolutely amazing. It’s been in the BC family for years (original FS ad posted below). The bass has a couple of necessary changes. It’s wearing straplocks (standard) the bridge cover is a replacement and the pickup and cover are Kent Armstrong like-for-like swaps. The bass sounds *incredible* and it’s got a lovely, full and rich tone. It’s currently wearing flats which inevitably add to that. Gibsons notoriously have low frets and this one is no different. The reason for the (relatively) low price is that the frets at the nut are very low. A dress will help but it may be worth considering a replacement in the near future. The bass is marked a Second. After asking some experts, consensus was it was likely a minor blemish. Could it be this freer marker dot? Quite possibly. The bass comes with a Hiscox case. I will send the bass to you but you’re more than welcome to come and try it (encouraged, even!) Price is £1895 £1650 £1550 which is reasonable for a bass that I admit may need a little work in the future. Images here. More on request. I’ll be sad to see this go but my roof work is taking longer and costing more.

I used to use this one with the students when I was teaching A-level music (or the vocational equivalent). I found it was really good.

Here’s my lightweight, super powered bass cab friend: the Barefaced Super Compact. This is in good, gigged, condition. There are marks on the tolex and some on the grill. Overall, it’s in good shape. You may have seen my post on the Amps thread. The 2 x One10 is a better modular solution for me so this is for sale. Price wise, I think £450 is fair (but please PM me if this is too much as I’m out of the loop.) I have the boxes to package up but would prefer collection from Bristol. More images if requested.

I won’t be soliciting advice for a price as I’m a law abiding, fee-paying, upstanding member of the BC community!

Yes that seems correct. Ok. Looks like we know what it is then!

I think it’s an old one. I’ll measure tomorrow - appreciate both of your help.

Hi, I have this cabinet which is excellent but I’m going to sell (as the 10s do the job I need). I will advertise it properly and ma a subscriber. Can anyone tell me precisely what cabinet it is?
-
Likely to be the valves but an amp that old should be looked over by a tech and serviced to avoid any issues. Might need a re-bias etc. Valves aren't cheap and it's never a good idea to mess around with electrical devices unless know what you're doing.

My wife named Alex James and Paul McCartney. She had a huge crush on Alex James who admittedly was a very beautiful man in the 1990s. (Not so much now)

If you’re getting the sound you want, that’s the only thing that matters.
-
Ahh so you bought one and it works? Thats excellent. Will invest if nobody buys the bass in the next few months.

This was the advice I was given by Thomann. The 1/4 was just a little too small.

Quite agree. I should say, my question wasn't so much about how to manage this financially, but socially – to ensure that it's positive and friendly, not acrimonious.

This is what we did with the original PA. I bought it and stored it until we jointly paid it off. Resale value is £0 I'm sure. The point, I guess, is that the musicians (singers, don't get upset) spend thousands on gear, including ongoing maintenance, consumables and the like. Singer's outlay = 0.
-
I play in a 4-piece band. We gig maybe 20-25 times a year. We bought a used PA from the lovely (and incredibly helpful and warm) chap here, but it’s showing it’s age. The singer wants us all to invest in a new, lightweight PA. This is purely used as a vocal PA (bigger gigs we’ll rent one). The drummer isn’t happy. He’s not hugely well off and his argument is that we (bass, drums and guitar) all spend thousands. I’m taking £5k of gear to each gig, for example, so I can see his point. So, how have you guys navigated this?

Great pub and some fantastic images!
