  1. Agreed. These will increase in value better than your pension fund.
  2. Just Pizz. What you’re experiencing is common. I’d say that when a pro looks at it and does the work we’ve all had done the bass will sing. They really are lovely.
  3. Snap! I had exactly the same work done by Martin Penning.
  4. I had this issue and it was a poorly shaped and fitted bridge. The legend that is Martin Penning sorted it, and the bass now sings (or rather it would of it wasn’t hidden away in my spare room to stop the kids destroying it).
  5. Or they’ll assume you’re the Blues Brothers pretending to be the Good ole Boys and you’ll be fine. Rawhide!
  6. That's a shame. I bought a bass from Barry Matthews about 20 years ago. It was a late 60s Jazz body with a 65 neck which was played by John Entwistle. I had all the pictures to support its provenance. Sold it when I gave up playing in 2008. Shame. Would love to see Barry's 66, but the link doesn't seem to work.
  7. That's why I said your advice was better than mine 🙂 I just turned up and played the songs (badly).
  8. This is much better advice than mine.
  9. The songs are your intellectual property, so by that token they're protected whether you register with the PRS or not. If Ed Sheeran decided to nick a chorus, you'd be able to prove that he'd stolen it from you and take him to court for it. If you feel this could happen, then sign up for the MU who offer legal protection. When it comes to royalties, PRS can claim these for you if your songs get played. To generate anything like a few pence, they'll need to be played thousands of times. Having had these conversations before in bands (once when Vodafone nearly used one of our songs for an advert*) the classic response to this is, 0 spilt 10 ways is still 0. Personally, I'd only consider registering with the PRS if there's the possibility your song will receive airplay on the radio, TV or be featured in an advert or whatever. Until that point, I'd consider it a generous gift to the universe. (*Vodafone didn't use the song and the German label we were signed to sent us back thousands of unsold copies of the album which still remain festering in locations throughout the UK.)
  10. I'm selling my Double Bass gig stand. It's an undisputed classic of design, and built in the UK. It's been used (for gigs and sessions) but does the job. It's this one: https://www.alangregory.co.uk/music/Double_Bass_Gig_Stand.html How about £15 collected from me in Bristol?
  11. It certainly is. I imagine my daughters (1 and 3) would find it frightening!
  12. He may have been lying. We’d had a lot to drink by this point. I’ve just seen some of the show and it’s truly dreadful.
  13. I was told by a reliable source that the celebrities pre-record their tracks and then it’s backing dancers in the costumes until the ‘big reveal’ when the celebrities finally don the outfits.
  14. Surely set up is a matter of preference too? Many shops assume that the factory QC would have done this.
  15. I went to PMT and was prepared for this experience but thankfully, the bass I played was well set up and the guy working there very helpful. I’d be disappointed if I’d gone to a shop and had this experience, but they’re not all the same.
  16. This is a painful one, but my beloved 1969s Boosey & Hawkes Artia has to go. Ive owned this bass since 2016, when I used it to start my DB adventure. I bought it from a professional who had used it in a Buddy Holly musical. It’s a completely ply bass I believe. Since then it’s had a series of upgrades. A new bridge, soundpost, re-shot fingerboard and a re-set neck all completed by Martin Penning (have receipts). It’s currently strung with Spirocores Mitts which suit this jazz bass down to the ground. The end pin is an upgraded carbon fibre post. The front has been stripped and the bass is covered in snicks, dings, dongs and smacks. It’s been used by me for gigs and by countless others too. Please don’t expect a new bass because this one has been used - A LOT, which helps to create a beautiful rich jazz sound. It’s really a well voiced instrument with a good, low action. I’m selling it because I don’t have room for two basses here and my hand carved Bryant bass is a beautiful instrument. This doesn’t come with the Realist pickup as I’m going to use that on another bass. There is no case with the bass either, but if you’re starting out I can source a good quality one as well as a stand too. Obviously I can’t post this, and I’d love you to try before you buy... Looking for £650.
  17. GSH was a great songwriter, lyricist and singer.
  18. I’m interested in shifting this now, so any offers for this super awesome piece of bass goodness?
  19. I'm decluttering in a big way and have gone through my CD collection and rationalised it. I appreciate that with streaming, YouTube and the like many people don't bother with CDs anymore, but I thought I'd stick these here to see if anyone wanted them. Prices are £2.50 for each CD, unless a boxed set, and I've included a price for that. Bulk discounts etc. All are in good playable conditions but have been used. Some may need a new case. They're in the order they came out of the shelf, so I can't list them alphabetically (or rather, can't be bothered.) Grant Green: Alive The Verve Album Tower of Power Donald Byrd: Street Lady Donald Byrd: Places and Spaces Jaco Pastorious: Word of Mouth John Coltrane: Blue Train Herbie Hancock: My Point of View Brother Jack McDuff: Double Barrelled Soul Candido: Thousand Fingered Man Deodato: Os Catedraticos 73 Lou Donaldson: Quarter/Quintet?Sextet Frank Sinatra: Come Fly With Me Grant Green: Am I Blue Donald Byrd: Electric Byrd Shuggie Otis: Inspiration Information Herbiew Hancock: Fat Alberta Rotunda Houston Person: Goodness! 20. Paddy, they’re free - just send me a couple of quid for postage! Im decluttering at the moment as we’re downsizing. Everything on here is all for nothing, as long as people want it and use it!
  21. As soon as my new Fender jazz turned off, I swapped the Roundwounds for Flats. This model was never on show in the shop, so the strings have never been used. Don't know what age, gauge etc but they're yours if you want them for a few quid postage. If you let me know this weekend they can be in the post Monday...
