This is a lovely shirt-scale Gretsch Electromatic Bass. It’s a lovely thing that I bought on here for my daughters to learn on. They prefer 6 strings so I’m moving it on for what I paid. It’s in great nick, with the plastic still on the plate. There was a knock at the bottom of the horn which has been professionally touched up. Take a look! I’m based in Bristol and you’re more than welcome to come and give it a try. This is a great little giggable Bass. (The inflatable 3 belongs to my daughter and is not included!)

Finally pushed myself to go to the jazz jam

That is a brilliant story! I may just about pluck up the courage to go to the one near me this month. -
I would thoroughly recommend getting a double bass. I gave up playing for a few years and it help to reignite my passion for it all.
-
That’s exactly it - the satin-like coating. Thanks for letting me know. It gets on my nerves a bit but good to know it will just take some time.

Hi all, quick question for people who have used Helicore strings before... The strings themselves feel like they have a coating on them which makes them feel very dry. Will this go away over time? I've only ever used Spirocore strings and never had this feeling with them. Just wanted to know what other people had experienced and whether this slightly 'tacky' feel will wear off over time.

I'm selling my almost brand new Minimark 802. this is a really fantastic little amp with a huge sound, great projection and decent volume. I bought this brand new in June this year as well as a Roqsolid Powerbag for gigging (with fetching pink piping!). I bought this to use with my upright bass and it's great! However, I picked up a cheap BG150 in the recent Phil Jones sale and I can't keep this, my AER and that too (without risking a divorce), so this one is for sale. I've never gigged it or even taken it out of the house, so it's as close to brand new as I reckon you'll find. The amp was £535 and the cover £50, so was thinking around £425 for it seems fair. Happy to talk about trades, interested in classic basses and upright stuff. I'd prefer cash on collection in Bristol (or a local meet up within 50 miles), but I could send this if necessary. I have the bubble wrap and pretty sure I can find a decent box too. Take a look at the pics and let me know if you need more!

That’s really interesting to know about the SLB. They’re lovely instruments. Im really enjoying the MK, but I bought it mostly for practice at home and after work. I think my band mates would prefer I use a real DB, but I think the MK would be perfect for gigging. I think if I were to gig it I would add another pickup.
-
Interesting. I always though the recesses stopped it from moving. I only had an SLB 100 mind you.
-
If you've ever had an Eminence the bridge can sometimes tilt forward slightly when you apply more tension to the strings. You just have to be aware this can happen. The MK does this as well. The builder warns this can happen, so I'm not criticising his work. Obviously, EUBs with a fixed bridge (the SLBs for example) then this isn't a problem. "Rock forward" is obviously an exaggeration, we're talking about millimetres, but it can affect the sound. I have a theory for why this may be the case, but who knows. It just means when I tighten the strings (or take it out of the case) I just check the bridge is firmly down in the right place. if it was a problem, I'd score the top or do something to ensure the bridge doesn't move.
-
Further update: Pickup output is very strong. It necessitates the use of a preamp (I use a Fishman). Its actually quite incredible how close to a DB it sounds. Still breaking in the strings which feel high-tension. The bridge has a slight tendency to rock forward, but that’s natural on any EUB. Overall, still happy!
-
Agreed this. Don’t use a sock to mute the bridge but a bit of old foam. It’s what the pros do!
-
I had the same. People will laugh me out of the forum when I say that the Mexican standard jazz I picked up earlier this year sounds and plays better than every other vintage bass I’ve ever owned aside from a totally original 64 I sold on here (which was incredible on every way) and the 66 I still own. I’ve never lost money on any bass to date, but the time I spent messing around with dusty old Fenders could have been much better spent!

That was exactly my set up too... TNT130

I can destroy your band...from a distance.

I had to cancel a jam session and a jazz band practice this week because both of my kids have diarrhoea. Didn’t really feel the need to give them the details but I’m sure they’ll think I’m just as useless and unreliable. -
Do you consider reading music important?
Burns-bass replied to greghagger's topic in Theory and Technique
The difficulty comes when you try to learn how to read music after playing bass for a period. You're trying to impose a framework onto something that you've already learned. It's difficult - but not impossible. I think reading music is a fundamental skill that musicians can benefit from, but it's obviously not essential - particularly given the incredible music that's been written and recorded by musicians who can't read music.- 115 replies

I meant when I started. Now I can afford boutique basses and all that, but I knew no better. It was a revelation when I picked up an Aria Pro II The Cat Bass. Loved that thing.
-
Ok, update... Set it up with a set of Helicore Hybrids and it feels great. They’re pretty high-tension, which is nice. The frame is fantastic and the full-size bridge makes it really feel like a DB with the correct string spacing which I’ve always found a challenge on other stick basses. The resonant board makes it sound like a double bass. It lacks the genuine warmth of a full sized beast, but that’s to be expected. Is it the best EUB I’ve ever used? I’d say it most definitely is. Its probably not as well made as the Yamaha, which is factory assembled, but it’s a lovely artisan product that I’m sure will be enjoyed by me for a long time. I bought mine without seeing one or playing one, but based on the reviews and views of players (mostly American). I’d say it’s definitely worth it.
-
Crikey. That’s a bold claim! Having a terrible, heavy bass with a thin sound and poor set up never stopped me playing. I went to a jam session this week and there was an Axl jazz Bass there which was equally poor, but that didn’t stop a steady stream of players (good and bad) having a crack.
-
I’d hazard a guess that this is 10 times better than the Kay P-bass I paid £25 for in 1997. Adjusting for inflation I’d hazard that’s about the same price, but an awful lot better bass...
-
This is the most un-rock and roll thing I’ve ever read. I’m sure it’s a great gig though!
