  2. I heard them every day from about 1992 to 1999, so I’ve done my time. It just never appealed to me at all. I even saw them once in the inner circle bit at Ealrs Court (very close!) and it just left me cold. Hey ho.

  5. You don’t see these very often! This is a handmade ‘stick’ upright bass. Built by a truly lovely chap in Cornwall the Farwest EUB is beautifully constructed (full specs below) from premium components. This is a Redhead model and is in good condition, although it has been gigged. There is some wear on the side of the fingerboard and a few minor marks, but nothing major at all. There are two pickups that offer a decent approximation of an upright sound. The all important waist rest is a revelation and works beautifully, flexing as you get higher up the fingerboard. I bought this on eBay about 5 months ago. I swapped the strings and had the rest rebuilt by Farwest (receipt included). I’m selling because the MK bass you can see on the background of the picture suits me better and has a more authentic tone (at almost 4 time’s the price). Not all stick basses are made equal. For little more than the price of a Stagg you can have a boutique handmade bass. Im always interested in trades. I’m up for anything! Price is £675. This is about half the cost of the one for sale in London.   6. I’m talking about the U.K. where the forum is based. I used to sell Wals, Hiwatts, Sound City’s and other U.K. gear to the states so I know how some of this stuff is prized over there. I guess having been able to buy a Wal for £500 you think of them as £500 basses. They’re nice, often heavy, very 80s and complex. If you love Wals, it’s all good.
  7. I’m not sure that’s entirely true about Wals retaining their value. They’re popular now but future value is all conjecture and history has shown how the market has dipped before. Anyone buying now is at the top of the market. If a couple of industry guys start using ACGs on high-profile gigs then the value of those could soar too...
  8. Hard cases are notoriously difficult to store! I had a relationship come to an end because of a solid double bass case (she wasn’t a keeper) Personally I’ve always going a soft case reasonable enough.
  9. I think some people have seen the increase in value and assume prices will continue to increase. From the outside it looks like there’s not where left for them to go but down. Mind you, I said that when people were paying £2,000 for 70s Fenders and I obviously know nothing.
  10. This is a good tongue in cheek thread. And I like it. If there’s a logic it’s that you’re playing on instinct rathe mr than being conscious of the note choices. I spoke with an incredible player who was cranking out BeBop standards at 300bpm and he admitted that “at that speed there’s very little music!”. You’ll surely need to know your stuff before you start soloing. And serious jazzers are usually (not not always) happy and supportive and would welcome the chance to offer some advice on your playing rather than call you out for being a fraud.
  11. Televised sport of any kind is a killer. Watching a crowd flit between some inconsequential match on the telly and the gig is soul destroying.
  12. I’m really sorry, I don’t know! I got them fitted at a shop and they worked fine. I’ve double checked them and that’s the length.
  13. Nobody wanted them in the 90s. I’m not entirely sure why they’re so popular now to be honest after having owned a few.

  15. I think there are some great ideas here. Could It be worth chatting with some local studios or acoustic firms who may be able to help you? I’m not suggesting s begging letter, but companies may want to get involved to help.
  16. This is car boot sale crap. The vintage obsession is getting out of hand, especially when you consider you could buy a mega Ashdoen or Ampeg rig for the same price.
