  1. String lengths are (in centimetres): G - 149.5 D - 158 A - 154 E - 163
  2. I'm in a similar position to your friend. I'm in two bands and I do one rehearsal every week with one, and the other is every couple of weeks. Bands are odd things. It can all get a bit emotional, however what worked for me was telling the guys that I was finding it difficult to manage everything and I needed a breather. People are usually pretty reasonable (if you give them the chance to be). It can get a bit fraught though. This week I'm doing a practive at 7:30 - 1- and then a gig at 10:45, so it's not ideal!
  3. I reckon this thread is at risk of going the way that any thread about jazz does... Music is entirely subjective and where one may hear unstructured noodling, another may infer a beautiful and melodic piece that challenges conventions with every chord change. (I'm the latter). Jazz is no better or worse than any other genre, it's just different. Back to the thread, this has inspired me to pop along to my local jazz jam this month. I'll let you know how I get on (badly, I imagine).
  4. If this is all about losing money then I could have bought Bitcoin pretty early. Biggest annoyance was not buying a pre EB stingray for £500 and a refinished 64 jazz (£2000) and One of Steve Harris’s Jazz basses he have a tech at the end of a tour (£750). Every other guitar I’ve wanted I’ve bought.
  5. This is terribly sad. I've never seen what this guy does, but the briefest glimpse makes my heart sink. I'm particularly struck by the headstock 'decal' that's done with a bloody Bic biro. It's for the unsuspecting parents and relatives or the new guitarist who is conned by this rubbish. I once got scammed on a vintage Fender when I was first starting out and I'm still a little bitter about it (I didn't lose money, some strong words sorted it out).
  6. This is a great bass driver / DI box. I got this recently and have used it a few times for practice and as a backup for a couple of gigs. However, I prefer to use my Fishman as I’m mostly doing DB stuff now. These are unbelievable value for money... i cant attach photos (will do what I can).
  7. Amen to that! Hope it all works out for you. It’s so exciting to unwrap it and start playing. Took me weeks to get over the initial delight and into the set up and tweaking.
  8. If you’re getting a bass built for you it’s understandable that others may not find the same sizes and specs to their liking. I’ve got a couple of custom instruments and they were always bought with the belief I’d keep them forever. While one is a well known DB builder (and an appreciating asset) the other probably lost 50% of its value as soon as I’d plucked a string.
  9. These are a really decent set of Spiro Weichs. These were fitted to an SLB 100 and used for a period of about 15 - 20 hours before I sold the bass (to someone here on BC if I remember rightly...) The shop that fitted them snipped them, so they’re probably more suited to an EUB. I can measure each string if you want / need me too. Just let me know. They sound great, obviously. I think £80 including delivery sounds fair. Cant seem to upload a picture as it’s too large. Will sort that!
  10. Hi Darren. The Schaller type ones are on the middle. I’ll have to get another pic up tomorrow. Will DM you!
  11. Just a tuner and a couple of bridges left now... Prices don’t include delivery, but I’ll do it as cheaply as possible. Single Mex tuner - £5 (ferrule, no screws) TBC high-mass bridge - £9 No-name bridge - £7 2 x Genuine fender neckplates plastic surrounds and screws - £8 each Neck plate - £1 2 x black knobs - £4 Plastic knobs - £2 Wilkinson Strat Pickups (complete set) £15
  12. This is a lovely shirt-scale Gretsch Electromatic Bass. It’s a lovely thing that I bought on here for my daughters to learn on. They prefer 6 strings so I’m moving it on for what I paid. It’s in great nick, with the plastic still on the plate. There was a knock at the bottom of the horn which has been professionally touched up. Take a look! I’m based in Bristol and you’re more than welcome to come and give it a try. This is a great little giggable Bass. (The inflatable 3 belongs to my daughter and is not included!)
  13. That is a brilliant story! I may just about pluck up the courage to go to the one near me this month.
  14. I would thoroughly recommend getting a double bass. I gave up playing for a few years and it help to reignite my passion for it all.
  15. That’s exactly it - the satin-like coating. Thanks for letting me know. It gets on my nerves a bit but good to know it will just take some time.
  16. Hi all, quick question for people who have used Helicore strings before... The strings themselves feel like they have a coating on them which makes them feel very dry. Will this go away over time? I've only ever used Spirocore strings and never had this feeling with them. Just wanted to know what other people had experienced and whether this slightly 'tacky' feel will wear off over time.
  17. I'm selling my almost brand new Minimark 802. this is a really fantastic little amp with a huge sound, great projection and decent volume. I bought this brand new in June this year as well as a Roqsolid Powerbag for gigging (with fetching pink piping!). I bought this to use with my upright bass and it's great! However, I picked up a cheap BG150 in the recent Phil Jones sale and I can't keep this, my AER and that too (without risking a divorce), so this one is for sale. I've never gigged it or even taken it out of the house, so it's as close to brand new as I reckon you'll find. The amp was £535 and the cover £50, so was thinking around £425 for it seems fair. Happy to talk about trades, interested in classic basses and upright stuff. I'd prefer cash on collection in Bristol (or a local meet up within 50 miles), but I could send this if necessary. I have the bubble wrap and pretty sure I can find a decent box too. Take a look at the pics and let me know if you need more!
  18. That’s really interesting to know about the SLB. They’re lovely instruments. Im really enjoying the MK, but I bought it mostly for practice at home and after work. I think my band mates would prefer I use a real DB, but I think the MK would be perfect for gigging. I think if I were to gig it I would add another pickup.
  19. Interesting. I always though the recesses stopped it from moving. I only had an SLB 100 mind you.
  20. If you've ever had an Eminence the bridge can sometimes tilt forward slightly when you apply more tension to the strings. You just have to be aware this can happen. The MK does this as well. The builder warns this can happen, so I'm not criticising his work. Obviously, EUBs with a fixed bridge (the SLBs for example) then this isn't a problem. "Rock forward" is obviously an exaggeration, we're talking about millimetres, but it can affect the sound. I have a theory for why this may be the case, but who knows. It just means when I tighten the strings (or take it out of the case) I just check the bridge is firmly down in the right place. if it was a problem, I'd score the top or do something to ensure the bridge doesn't move.
  21. Further update: Pickup output is very strong. It necessitates the use of a preamp (I use a Fishman). Its actually quite incredible how close to a DB it sounds. Still breaking in the strings which feel high-tension. The bridge has a slight tendency to rock forward, but that’s natural on any EUB. Overall, still happy!
