1.
He said he made a mistake with the price and is going to list them higher, I and the others will get them at the original price.
That's bloody good of him. Nuff respect to that man.
2. The arm weight things is true, but learning DB (if you’ve come from an electric bass background) is a challenge. It is all about arm weight but your strain is going to be about building up some strength and stamina to be in what’s likely to be a new position and unlearning, to a degree. The habits and memories of playing electric bass. You need to spend time playing, it’s that simple. And I do too...
3. I always used to use the Josquin de Pres sight reading for bass book. It’s a really great way to learn rhythm and sub-division. It takes dedications (a few 5 minute practices every day) but progress is very quick. Worth a try at least.
4. To be fair, the chap does say no breaks to the body...
5. I always hate it when a bass sounds more like a bag of aluminium cans being kicked down a hallway.
6. Hi all, I've been given a set of love Evah Pirazzi upright bass strings, but there's no G string. I'm not even going to smile at that because I'm the grown up and it's the truth. Does anyone have a spare, used G (doesn't need to match) ? Any help gratefully received and I'll either swap something from my parts/music book draw or stump up some cold hard cash. Alternatively, if anyone has an old set of Spirocores, that's what I use on my upright, so could buy them... Cheers!
7. Poor guy. Hope he finally gets his bass at some point!
8.
(Also the brand is Squier...)
. Everyone is a critic!
9. Can't seem to upload them for some reason - PM if you want them! Will send this for £55 as I want to get rid of it.
10. I've got a Chinese Bullet Squire for sale. It's in good condition, sunburst. The tremolo unit has been screwed down to sort intonation. There are two small holes in the back of the neck near the bottom of the , I've never discovered why. Doesn't affect playing. I'll send this to you for £60 (neck removed).
11.
I've been buying and selling here for 15 years and 99% of the time folks are 100% reliable, but I would not do a trade deal overseas, far easier for one of you to sell their respective instrument and buy the other's
Agree 100%. In fact, the last deals I've done have all been in person. It's brilliant meeting Basschatters in person.
12. My brother used to work with roni Size bassist Si John at a film company that turned out to be a VAT fraud operation with a sideline in corporate tax avoidance.
13. Hi all, i've got the stuff from Carol Kaye. Rather than post an open link, if you want me to share it with you, then pop me a PM. All free etc.
14. Fantastic. I've got the Brun book and I agree it's fantastic. Its actually quite rare. I've not managed to track down the Elgar book yet, but I'm sure I will. Thanks for the kind words. The book is in development, so no structure yet just research. Will update in the new year when it's taken more shape. Keep the recommendations coming people!
15. When I used to claim mileage allowance for cycling this classed me (in my mind at least) as a professsional cyclist. I've played and recorded with professionals, was semi-pro for a while and it's all the same. It's the same as a sense of humour, if you have to demand a pro attitude it's likely you don't have it.
16. Suggests on his Wikipedia page (100% reliable of course) that his tone was created by plucking then palm-muting. I find that hard to believe given the attack. I reckon it's a stick of foam under the bridge like Herbie Flowers and the UK session guys. It's a great sound though. Same sort of thing runs through the 60s funky Italian soundtracks. Also a lot of early Lalo Schifrin / west coast jazz has the same tone. Carol Kaye who played on a pot of this stuff definitely had a foam mute.
17. Usually a Fender Bass with flatwpunds and a foam mute. In some cases they're double tracked too (upright Bass and electric simultaneously). One of the best bass tones I've ever heard is Herbie Flowers on Serge Gainsbourge's Melody Nelson.
18. I'll stick it all in DropBox tomorrow and post the link.
19. Hi all, I'm about to start researching a book all about double bass and need to increase my library. This isn't so much about playing, technique etc (although useful) but about history and construction. I know some of these books can be expensive and rare, but let me know what you might suggest as I certainly don't have a comprehensive list just yet. This isn't a wanted ad (I have posted one), but about crowd sourcing appropriate sources. I won't go into detail, but feel free to DM if you want to chat or have any recommendations etc.
20. If anyone is interested I interviewed Caroline Kaye about this stuff, but never published the article as I didn't get around to writing it. Anyway, can post the stuff somewhere of anyone is interested? Includes a load of her handwritten transcripts, contracts and stuff as well.
