It took me about 5 years to find a vintage Fender pre CBS bass I wanted. I reckon in that time I had about 10 70s Precision and Jazzes trading up over time. As people will tell you on here that some vintage Fender basses are great, but some are absolute dogs!

Which one is the bass that will end your GAS
Burns-bass replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in General Discussion
I find there's a difference between wanting something and needing it - I just need to figure out how to identify it. I have a room full of instruments, but play 3 old ones. For a decade I owned and gigged just one bass, a 66 Fender Jazz which did everything I needed. I could quite happily go back to that one instrument, but I could never sell it. -
I think where a lot of custom builds fall down is that the person commissioning the bass gets involved in all the wrong decisions, such as woods, pickups, electronics and hardware; when they should simply go to their luthier of choice and say how they want the bass to look, feel and sound and let them get on with picking the components that are going give the correct end result.
I agree with this. I nearly went down this route and discovered what I really wanted was a warm and friendly passive instrument (i.e. what I already had). Fair play to the builder that he was clear that I didn't actually need to spend huge amounts with him to get that. There are a couple of other issues too. Collectability/investment value is more in a vintage Fender than it would be in a purpose built bass. It's not a problem if you're planning to keep it forever, but if (like me) you look at some of your instruments as a little savings pot then it's best to spend on something that will accrue in value. The other thing is that people spend a fortune on custom basses in the hope they'll sound like Stanley Clarke. Sometimes a better use of a small fortune on a bass is to spend a grand on a bass and the rest on lessons and some free time and space to play it.
You want a 66 CAR Jazz with matching h/s and lollypop tuners. Well that's what I want anyway
I have one! It's spectacular and I've played it every day for more than a decade. I recently bought / invested in a great condition 64' Jazz for around the same sum you're looking at. Took a few years to find, but it completes my small collection. As others have said there's a lot of junk out there, fakes and ambitious sellers etc. You need to educate yourself on the market and buy something that works for you, your music and your aspirations. My next purchase? A 62' RI jazz bass I can use with my jazz trio, and that I'm not afraid to leave the house with...

This came with my double bass and has never been used. I don't know a great deal about it, but I believe it to be a J-Tone slap back pickup. He describes it as such: "This pick up unit is designed for slap back on the fingerboard and not for the general amplification of the instrument" http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2ed4685e65 Is it of interest to anyone? If so, how about £12.50? I don't play slap. I've also not tested it, but it is unused. If it doesn't work, you can have your money back.

I'm selling my amazing Hiwatt Hi-Gain 50 watt all valve combo. This is a great amp that really does nail that sound of the 70s. Think Floyd, Zeppelin and any of the other bands that only used Hiwatts. At 50 watts it's still obscenely loud, but can be used without a sink at home levels. It's a gigging amp though, and could easily power a decent size venue. In good working condition, no tolex damage and it has certainly had an easy life with me... Based in Bristol, I can't post this because it is heavy and fragile. A few people have asked about all of my ads. I'm not a scammer, I'm selling lots of gear because I have just bought a 64' Jazz Bass.

Thanks Marc! I think the bass defies attempts to classify it. It's the most unique instrument I've had since owning a Flying V Bassix upright bass about 15 years ago. I'm not out to make a fortune, like you I want to see it being used and restored. I have no time to do so, hence it being for sale here...

Anyone got a wing/clicky pickup to shift?
Burns-bass replied to AndyBass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I have a J Tone slap bass pickup for sale if you're interested? -
All original, black 1974 Telecaster Custom - exactly the same as Keith Richards' Tele (was probably in the factory at the same time!). Listed on ebay, I'm sure you can find it. I have LOADS more pictures and details, just send me a message here. Available at a substantial discount to a fine Basschatter.

I've got a basically brand new Sire Marcus Miller V7 Alder-5 AWH for sale. It's this version in white, and still has the plastic on the scratch plate. I can't get on with 5 string basses (string spacing), but this is a lovely guitar. The bass is this one, and can send pictures on request (or when I get time and the baby stops crying!): https://www.thomann....alder_5_awh.htm I'm based in Bristol, cash on collection preferred...

Ormston Burns upright - help with value
Burns-bass replied to Burns-bass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Had a few PMs about the bass, and I've uploaded images and advertised for sale at £650. Take a look, see what you think and let me know if I"m being bonkers about the value... -
Not sure if this is of interest to anyone, but here's my beautiful 1974 Fender Stratocaster. This is the hard tail model, with no tremolo. It's in lovely condition as you can see, and plays fantastically. The pickups are strong, the guitar feels great and plays amazingly well. This is the desirable model with staggered pole pickups which are agreed upon to have the best sound. The guitar has had the usual 5 way switch mod at the same time the pots were changed. The tuners have been changed to new reissue tuners to ensure the guitar plays well. Finally, one of the pickup covers has been replaced, this was because it cracked. It's a good, honest strat that plays amazing well and sounds great. The couple of changes make the guitar more usable. This guitar plays beautifully I have to say, low action and the maple neck is fantastic. The sustain is great, in part because of the hardtail bridge. Blues and rock lines sound fantastic. The guitar come with a modern Fender moulded case. Feel free to come and take a look if you're in Bristol. I can post, but would prefer collection. If this isn't your thing, I do have a 74 Telecaster Custom for sale too...

Here we have a wonderful and I believe quite rare Ormson Burns upright bass. As you can see this is something of an oddity, but it's certainly full of character. I think that there were only 8 of these ever made, which makes it rare. I have estimated the value of the bass as a result of feedback from people here, but happy to chat if it's something you will want and actually use. The bass is completely all original, and actually plays and functions. The bass has some damage to it which the previous owner used Umbrol paint to touch up. It's a shame, but it's actually just in a few places, mostly on the bottom of the bass. The pickup is in good condition, and is housed on a foam base which seems to be fine. The bass fired up when I played it around 18 months ago, but since then has been doing nothing. The chrome on the bass and the scratchplates are all original and seemingly in good condition. The F-holes aren't real holes, they're bits of black plastic stuck on the front of the bass (it was the 60s, eh?), but they are all original. The neck fingerboard isn't real ebony, it's some sort of ebony-style veneer. This has, in some places cracked a little bit, hopefully I've pictured that. I've had the bass endpin built by an engineer, and it performs beautifully. The original was sadly lost somewhere through the sands of time, but the replacement is a functional improvement. To my eternal shame I bought this to finish, but never bothered and now I have to make way for a very expensive new bass. It does however require a little bit of work to get it into tip-top playing condition. I'd suggest:

Re-wiring the bass.
New pots, or at least a clean
New nut (the strings sit on this and function well, but
Full set-up
After that you'll have an incredible bass that will certainly turn heads. I believe one was for sale a number of years go, which you can see here in all of its glory: http://www.daydreamg...NS+UPRIGHT+BASS Price wise I'm happy to chat through options, but I'm not desperate for cash and I don't want trades too. A price of £650 was suggested to me as a fair one in a PM, so let's go with that. Hopefully someone will want her! In terms of postage, I've considered it but I think it might be a bit of a hassle, so I would prefer collection from Bristol. I work for myself, so you can view and collect at any point. It's certainly something. I'm not sure if call it music mind you.
-
I can help with this too. Can bring along some vintage basses if anyone is interested.
-
I should point out he was playing a gig, not enjoying a pint.
-
Having seen Mark King in a small pub once, I reckon you could give him a £20 Encore and he'd make it sing...
-
50s and 60s stuff is all based on arpeggios, so just make sure you learn major, minor and dominant arpeggios and you should be fine. If you know the route and 5th, just add the 3rd, 7th and octave and you should be fine!

I have no meaningful advice here (I play, or rather 'attempt' jazz), but she sounds like a great woman and what a lovely present. The band look fantastic, and I bet will be brilliant. I'd say not to worry too much. I've played gigs at weddings and you'll have an amazing time and everyone will be rooting for you. Get the start and the end right, and you'll become a legend! Hope someone has some better advice, but good luck from me.
