  1. Im still gainfully employed! All joking aside, it’s going well thanks. Something like 20 - 30 gigs a year which is about right for me.
  2. It’s all good. I wanted to say how amazing this bass looks and how incredible it must sound. Good luck with the sale.
  3. This is the bass in question. https://www.andybaxterbass.com/collections/bass-guitars/products/1965-fender-jazz-bass-sunburst-3 My early 1967 jazz bass has lollipop tuners. (Serial number is 1966 but the pickups have a 67 stamp date). I have no idea what the reality of this (and in all honesty, I don’t care), but it is interesting all these differences. My 1967 bass is totally original but doesn’t have a button on the back of the headstock. Why? I don’t know.
  4. It was on their Instagram feed few days ago. I’ve bought several guitars from Graham at amazing prices. He (and the rest of the people at the shop) are brilliant. Thoroughly recommend them to anyone.
  5. I’m guessing you bought the fretless from Badlands? Looked like a lovely thing at a fantastic price.
  6. I was selling one of these but it was so good I decided to keep it. Lightweight, vintage feel and a slim neck at this price? Amazing!
  7. Haha I did. Two natural wood ones and a blue one. Obviously being set up and new so I didn’t touch, but they looked great.
  8. In Bristol there’s a really vibrant musicians chat group. That’s where I found two bands I’m currently in. (Was 3, one broke up!) I’m guessing it’s a case of searching them out, but there’s nothing on Gumtree or Join My Band that compares. Perhaps if you said where you live people could offer some insight?
  9. Facebook is where it happens now, at least where I live.
  10. Yes, I can see from this example that you're right: https://www.kennysmusic.co.uk/fender-usa-international-series-p-bass-1979-82-pre-owned-p8462/s8462?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=fender-fender-usa-international-series-p-bass-1982-pre-owned-p2370498&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&cid=GBP&glCurrency=GBP&glCountry=GB&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw-5y1BhC-ARIsAAM_oKmv02ImyXvMmYicrN7W0bbn2kRkXQZ75VDAestt-yNptRSgXwLDsswaAgXzEALw_wcB Hope it's legitimate and the buyer gets a good price at a good price with no hassles!
  11. Wouldn't there still have been pickup and bridge covers even in the early 80s? Can't see any holes near the bridge or pickup.
  12. No, I’ve heard that. It’s the internal number that matters. Will get that today (and weigh it!)
  13. I’ve used both. The bass cube isn’t loud enough if you’re playing in a large outdoor space. The Street Cube is voiced for guitar and voice and isn’t for bass. (I sold one on here and have experience using one for outdoor gigs!)
  14. Depends on the type of music you want to play, but in Bristol there are several community jazz bands. As long as you can read to Grade 5, you can attend and play each week. They regularly gig and look like a lot of fun to be part of. This is a way to rapidly accelerate learning and development and the sort of standards they play aren’t hugely challenging. Perhaps something like this could be good for a year? (It’s how I started playing DB and got out playing very quickly.)
  15. I saw three Chowny basses being set up so yes they are still being sold.
  16. Fair enough. Where did you get the information on number? I’ve obviously read up where I can but I’m sure a new owner would be interested. There is a faint number inside and I’ll picture it tomorrow when I get a chance.
  17. I’m pretty sure I could get a semi-accurate measurement tomorrow. Leave it with me!
  18. Cheers Chris. They’re remarkable things and I hope someone loves it as much as I did.
  19. So, the day has come… I’m selling my 1930s Alcoa Aluminium Double Bass. The bass is from the 1930s and was built in the States. Fewer than 500 were made and only a handful survive. Rare in the States, this is possibly the only one in the UK. (Apparently not - see below!) I bought it last year and have loved owning it. The bass was set up by Thomas & George Martin with a new adjustable bridge. It was restrung and further fettled by Martin Penning. This has been worked on by the UK’s leading luthiers and it’s in wonderful playing condition. Currently set-up with D’addario strings. Size-wise it’s a *big* 3/4. Dimensions are listed below. It fits in a 3/4 bass case. The measurement from the nut to the bridge is 108cm - so firmly in 4/4 territory here. It’s not laser accurate but it’s not a typical 3/4 by any means of the imagination. Body length is 112cm, bottom bout about 68.5 (width) and top 53 width. Sound wise it’s an odd thing. There’s a metallic thump to it and it amplifies amazingly well (especially if you use a magnetic pickup). A piezo can lead to feedback. There are dents, marks and more on this bass. It’s 97 years old. The bass is structurally sound, stunningly set up and is unique. I’m selling because the gigs I have demand a wood bass and the Czech Ease does what I need it to. This is for sale at £3500 which reflects the purchase price, work and new strings. It will come with a used 3/4 bag. The pickup will be removed (or can be purchased with negotiation). I am interested in trades. A smaller 3/4 (wood, obviously) would be of interest. This is pickup only. No couriers, postage, pickup by a man with a van etc. It’s simply too valuable and downright cool to risk being damaged.
  20. This is good single cab solution. Me (DB), guitar and vocals go through it and loud enough for a decent size crowd dispersed over a reasonable area. https://www.gear4music.com/PA-DJ-and-Lighting/Mackie-Thump-GO-Portable-Battery-Powered-Speaker/41RC?origin=product-ads&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_kjLSaxkP62DvC4h1mplbB1_NhR&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5IXPhqbKhwMVU5JQBh2SQRS_EAQYASABEgIRofD_BwE
  21. I saw Embrace at some 90s Butlins weekender. They weren’t really a favourite band of mine (ok, I actively disliked them at the time) but they were absolutely fantastic. The show was excellent, the frontman was a consummate professional and they got the whole place up and jumping around. Much better than the critically lauded Lightning Seeds who really didn’t want to be there.
  22. Hi all, this is a question that I'm going to ask here as you're all players of the big beast. I've been using pedals with my electric bass and they work well. When I tried the same pedal assortment with DB it seemed to such all the bass out. It's odd. I'm using a magnetic pickup into an EBS pre-amp (Stanley Clarke) then through an octaver, fuzz pedal and delay (not all on at the same time!). Partly this could have been because the amp I was using was rubbish (Ashdowm RM 500 combo), so will try on the big rig when I get a quiet day. But any other ideas?
