Difference between a jazz guitarist and a rock guitarist
Burns-bass replied to Leonard Smalls's topic in General Discussion
Not true at all. Jazz is all about clarity and articulation. Rock is mostly about attitude. Just because jazz players know the notes, it always sound like something from Rock School. -
Comedian’s ‘tortured’ relationship with DB
Burns-bass replied to Richard Jinman's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Was very funny. The allure of playing jazz is always there but the reality is very different, I guess. I enjoy DB but it is hugely impractical. -
Daddario Chromes are my favourite. They’re easy enough to bend but have that vintage thump you want.

Slapping, popping and percussive bass
Burns-bass replied to Burns-bass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I realised the sound required was (as is suggested above) a percussive style of pizz. I must admit, I struggled a lot at the start, but setting the bass up properly helped. It’s a useful tool to have (although I prefer playing jazz). Gigs done, money in the bank, booked for more. Can’t ask for more then that. -
I’ve worked in factories (and my dad used to build them) and these things happen on production lines. The odd missing stamp isn’t much to worry about I wouldn’t have thought.

The Blockheads featuring Norman Watt-Roy
Burns-bass replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
I did my first ever gig supporting Norman Wattroy as part of Wilco Johnson’s band. He used all my gear and was absolutely lovely to me, a callow youth. Watching him then plan was an education. Absolute monster player and phenomenal stage presence. -
What promo efforts work for your band?
Burns-bass replied to dclaassen's topic in General Discussion
We use a booking agent to manage everything. I don’t know if that’s the case for all venues, but I know that many now use them to arrange their live music. Its almost impossible to approach venues “cold” - but since we started gigging, it’s an awful lot easier to pickup gigs. In rural areas, I guess nothing replaces dropping in for a pint and a chat. -
Smell test. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Why not message the seller and ask to take a picture with today’s newspaper (old school way) or some other way to prove ownership. To me, this looks all off.

The Aluminium/Aluminum Double Bass **Mega Thread** :)
Burns-bass replied to Beedster's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Second gig just done in a very busy blues pub. Fed back obscenely until I stuffed the F holes with tea towels (never leave the house without them!). Paid £100, so I’m now 57 gigs away from breaking even… -
I’d replace the whole set. Check out the ads (err, Sprirocores are good!)

I totally get your point with new music. Personally, I’ll always try and see gigs, and buy merch direct as I’ve been told this is the best way to ensure the band get the most return. When it comes to stuff I’ve bought in multiple formats I have fewer qualms with it.

Did he buy it after playing it? (Genuine question)
-
Yeah I get that. Perhaps I’ve inhaled enough of the musky smell from old cases not to become intoxicated by it. As an instrument, I can’t see it justifies the premium. As an investment, it’s too illiquid in a fragile market that is (let’s be honest) dominated by men of a certain age. I think your 1971 bass, for example, is the perfect spot. Reasonably priced, great story, 100% genuine, and it’s out playing music a few days after you bought it. But if someone here buys it, I’d happily pay £50 for an hour!
