  1. Haha, I wasn't bidding on this one. I bought the 12 string Taylor guitar. That's a great deal for a £900 guitar!
  2. Ahh were you there as well? I’ve bought a few bits from those guys and they’re really lovely.
  3. All of the basses you’ve mentioned will require a pickup. You’ll get no usable acoustic tone from an Eminence for example, but with a pick up it sounds great. In my experience, no EUB will deliver any sort of usable acoustic signal (aside from the Czech Ease, which isn’t an EUB but a cut down big dog). I have an MK Jazz which provides a wonderful tone with a pickup. And I’m selling it to, so feel free to message me.
  4. I did think part of it was auction fever. I’ve seen old Fenders being sold for that, but not Ricks.
  5. I attended an auction today (Dore and Rees) and picked up a few bargains. I was interested in a 1966 Rickenbacker until the price went above £10,000. I think the hammer fell at £11,000, with auctioneers commission of 33%. That’s the best part of £14,000. Are they that rare? It was a bit of a magical moment in the sale room (I was online, but even so).
  6. Where are you based? These sound like a lot of fun for winter but depends where you live.
  7. Even if it’s still working it’s still free…!
  8. I bought a 1965 jazz bass neck off Barry for £150 and sold it on a previous incarnation of Basschat for.... £150. Crazy days.
  9. That was Barry Matthew’s’ one wasn’t it? Bought a few things off Barry. Nice guy!
  10. Was this the one Andy Baxter had? That sold for £12,000.
  11. The only people who care about the brand of guitar you’re playing are other musicians. I just picked up a Squier Precision Special (matching headstock), and it’s genuinely phenomenal. Needed a few tweaks but it looks great and sounds amazing. It’s genuinely as good as any of the Mex Fenders I’ve had, although I would say that it’s been set up very well and played in. Music snobs are frightfully dull.
  12. I’ve always been told you can fix any wood break or split but this looks terminal to me!
  13. Ahh. The effects loop thing worked! So the amp is fine, it’s just the jack socket (or the preamp).
  14. Good question! I’ll check. Most amp techs here will charge you £40 to take a look, so not really worth it. But if someone knows what they’re doing, it could be?
  15. This is a Marshall 30 watt combo. It powers up but when you plug in an instrument it just buzzes. I’d love to fix it but who am I kidding, it won’t happen. collection from Bristol or it goes to the tip on Sunday.
  16. This sort of thing makes the forum. Great stuff guys.
  17. What bass is 280cm? There are safe limits to transport stuff, and you won’t find a commercial carrier that will take this.
  18. This is, quite frankly incredible, but a beginner should probably start by getting the basics down and maybe aim a little lower! As soon as you can play a few notes, get out and play with other people. There’s something very odd about DB, people just seem to love it - so give the public what it wants! In all seriousness, DB can feel a slog when you start but playing a few bluegrass tunes or folk songs with people builds confidence massively as well as keeping you going.
  19. It’s a good point. In the early 00s, one pound would buy two dollars…
  20. Import duties, raw material costs, wage increases, transport costs, lower production volumes… Anyone involved in selling stuff can tell you how costs have increased across the board. Moaning about how much a Fender costs is the same as my dad complaining that a Mars bar cost 9p in 1965. So what? Given Fender has laid off 300 people they’re hardly making a mint from building basses and guitars.
  21. I wouldn’t waste your time. He’s becoming ever more cantankerous and difficult. It’s less a shop, more a museum so That chances of him being there and selling you something are very slim.
  22. This is just plain horrid.
  23. Went to see Lalo Schifrin gig and it was incredible. Half were his iconic soundtracks and the other half his jazz stuff, mixed with some Latin stuff (as you’d expect!). I think Bullit and the Dirty Harry soundtracks are the best. My brother is a record dealer and he’s done a huge amount of stuff, much of which was ephemeral and hard to find. So much of the soundtrack stuff was incredible, very musically sophisticated and experimental.
  24. Good for you Andy. Sounds like a toxic setup. I’m thankfully in a band with people who all share the drive and commitment to do things properly. Rehearsals are booked, paid for and attended. Equipment is well maintained and songs learned. The difference is we’re a “dry” band - no boozing before, during or after gigs and rehearsals, but we all get together for a blow out when we can. Works so much better.
