What are you listening to right now?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsrGycCuMTo Possibly the best lyricist of his generation. -
Not sure it's necessary to be honest, i've had plenty of good deals with people who've only had a few posts, in fact the only bad deal I've ever had on here was with an "established" member. A lot of people find sale threads on here through google and register to buy stuff, in fact that's how I found bassworld back in the good 'ol days. As long as you're sensible and exercise caution I don't see the issue in dealing with new members.

Decided to part with my slap bass again, it's just not getting used. I can take specific pics if anytone wants but it's in this board shot: It's in very good condition with box. For those unfamiliar it's a weird overdirve, it's basically a compressor with a drive control and very dramatic eq controls. I'd actually ity's more like a preamp than an overdrive, it does twangy clank and round smooth bass , i've never come across another pedal like it really. Looking for £45 posted, not after trades.
yeah, would be way easier if they were all in own boxes. As it is they are a little bit of a project. I suppose I could offer to get enclosures and the parts for them but then wouldn't be able to let them go as cheaply... the muff as a circuit and bits, it works but wouldn't be in a box so would need an enclosure and a few parts to finish the true bypass circuit.... BTW I'm not PMing anyone back yet but making a mental note of who got there first in terms of dibs.
Not wanting to turn this into a sale thread but that's no problem for me, got a drilled and enclosure and loads of jacks lying around.
-
Yup, I'd be tempted by the muff for the right price, drop me A PM. As long as they work people will buy them.

Do you consider yourself an "expert" bass player?
bobbass4k replied to Jam's topic in General Discussion
Someones probably told him he's the best bassist they've ever seen or he can play a few Vic Wooten tunes. True masters recognise that there's always more to learn. -
There must be a total of 3 bass pedals that sound good to my ears - the rest sound .......well, crap - and yet I keep seeing 'em held in high esteem by some people.....(Big Muff springs to mind)..... Surely if you've got a good basic rig, a preamp, chorus and compressor that's all you need?? Am I missing something or is it just clever marketing by manufacturers?
[sigh] It's a matter of subjective test and the music you're playing. Take away Justin Chancellors pedals and Tool won't sound like Tool anymore, he needs the sounds the pedals create to play the music that they play. You obviously don't think those kinds of sounds are good and don't play music that requires them. That's fine, for the vast majority of musical styles and bassists, bass > cable> amp is the sound they need and want. But please don't assume that you're right and those of us who use pedals are wrong. There is no right and wrong here, just subjective taste. [/sigh over]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJK3KwmExMk I currently operate on the principle that anyone who dislikes this song dislikes music. Naughty language/nonsensical lyrics warning: not for those of a sensitive or overly sensible disposition. -

Sometimes it is justified, a bassist friend of my housemates came round once and I let him have a jam on my gear, for some reason I assumed he knew what he was doing. He plugged in to my tube amp and flicked both switches on simultaneously and then complained there was no sound coming out. After that no one was allowed near the gear without an extensive and patronising lecture.

My view has always been if the bypassed signal chain is affecting the tone so badly that it affects pitch then somethings wrong, my tuner always gives the same reading at the start or the end.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UifrckJBjS0 I love his bass tone, it sounds kind fo flappy and badly recorded but it cuts through perfectly, not an easy thing to do with 3 guitars. -
Boss DD-3/6/7 probably has the best features to size ratio. I don't think my DD-20 is that big, it's smaller than a time factor or a dl-4 and I think it's got the most features short of a time factor

The current setup, actually mostly happy, except for the lack of a filter and I' hankering for a mastotron again. If anyone has the very specific desire to swap a Mastotron for an Ultra Fuzz let me know...

Best strings for de-tuning a semi-tone down on a 5-string...
bobbass4k replied to SimonH's topic in Accessories and Misc
DR DDT's are the perfect thing, by some engineering witchcraft the tension doesn't really vary that much. I go from D# standard to drop B quite regularly with mine and I've never noticed a tension difference. I have a 0.05 to 0.11 set and the 0.11 is perfectly playable in B, flaps a little in A, so a 0.125 should be fine in A#. The intonation is perfect in evey tuning, and they make lows a lot more distinct. -
Hmm, sounds kind of similiar to an impedance mismatch, a sort of garting effect at the start of the note, but as far as I'm aware the Blowtorch is fine with actives. My only other thought is intonation really, check your intonation is perfect on every fret. Another thought if it's 5'th fret (and sorry if it's a very simple thing and i'm condascending you), but when you play 5'th are you muting the next open string? Id an open string is the same pitch it'll resonate, that could cause some nasty phasing issues.

Most godawful tuning you've been asked to play in
bobbass4k replied to Nibody's topic in General Discussion
Nope. I'm in my 32nd year as a bass player now and I've never got into a situation where I need to detune to play in a particular key. I've got all the notes - if it's a problem getting to/from them then I just have to work a little harder.
Maybe I just have lazy technique but I hate not been able to use open strings, if you can't use open strings you're physically limited I find. Take the F# example, just half a step down and all the open strings are available to you. -

Don't you find only playing in one tuning limits they keys you play in? Standard doesn't really lend itself to every key, something like F# negates all the open strings in standard. I also find my fretting hand is drawn to the same places, dropping tunings can help capture a completely different mood. Maybe it's a style thing, I just don't use standard anymore, D standard, Drop C and Drop B for me.
i have just tried this for the first time ever and its crazy!
I must admit I'm not a fan of Drop G, it renders the low string unusable, there's no cab that can reproduce it. You can just use D standard and have all the same notes availble just in different octaves, which helps cut through. -
I'm kind of wrestling with this, just got a proto-band together, had a few jams and it's been really good, we're all on the same page musically and they all know their stuff. I'm looking to make serious effort of it, I want to practice, write and gig a lot, basically get as far as we can, so do the guitarists. Only problem (problem seems a bit unfair but you know what I mean) is the drummer lives much further afield and has a 3 year old. He's said he's as committed as the rest of us but I have visions of having to cancel practices and turn down gigs because he can't make it. I feel pretty bad about having doubts because he has a kid, it seems kind of petty, but he's older than the rest of us too and has a full time job. We're so in tune musically though we want to try and make it work, but I have a sneaky feeling he's going to have to bail on us in a few months hopefully when gigging gets regular.

So sad, so very very sad. And some rough song ideas from a potential guitarist for a potential band. I forgot that some guitarists are actually good, I'd more or less given up hope. -
