Hmm, sounds kind of similiar to an impedance mismatch, a sort of garting effect at the start of the note, but as far as I'm aware the Blowtorch is fine with actives. My only other thought is intonation really, check your intonation is perfect on every fret. Another thought if it's 5'th fret (and sorry if it's a very simple thing and i'm condascending you), but when you play 5'th are you muting the next open string? Id an open string is the same pitch it'll resonate, that could cause some nasty phasing issues.

Most godawful tuning you've been asked to play in
Nope. I'm in my 32nd year as a bass player now and I've never got into a situation where I need to detune to play in a particular key. I've got all the notes - if it's a problem getting to/from them then I just have to work a little harder.
Maybe I just have lazy technique but I hate not been able to use open strings, if you can't use open strings you're physically limited I find. Take the F# example, just half a step down and all the open strings are available to you. -

Don't you find only playing in one tuning limits they keys you play in? Standard doesn't really lend itself to every key, something like F# negates all the open strings in standard. I also find my fretting hand is drawn to the same places, dropping tunings can help capture a completely different mood. Maybe it's a style thing, I just don't use standard anymore, D standard, Drop C and Drop B for me.
i have just tried this for the first time ever and its crazy!
I must admit I'm not a fan of Drop G, it renders the low string unusable, there's no cab that can reproduce it. You can just use D standard and have all the same notes availble just in different octaves, which helps cut through. -
I'm kind of wrestling with this, just got a proto-band together, had a few jams and it's been really good, we're all on the same page musically and they all know their stuff. I'm looking to make serious effort of it, I want to practice, write and gig a lot, basically get as far as we can, so do the guitarists. Only problem (problem seems a bit unfair but you know what I mean) is the drummer lives much further afield and has a 3 year old. He's said he's as committed as the rest of us but I have visions of having to cancel practices and turn down gigs because he can't make it. I feel pretty bad about having doubts because he has a kid, it seems kind of petty, but he's older than the rest of us too and has a full time job. We're so in tune musically though we want to try and make it work, but I have a sneaky feeling he's going to have to bail on us in a few months hopefully when gigging gets regular.

So sad, so very very sad. And some rough song ideas from a potential guitarist for a potential band. I forgot that some guitarists are actually good, I'd more or less given up hope. -

What the hell does "In the pocket" mean anyway? I know what people mean when they say it, but I don't see the relevance.

Christ, that Sykes fella must be rich, the band ain't bad but I've heard better metalcore singers in bands of angry 15 year olds. They've got lots of very nice gear, so they've got some money behind them, and they're on an indie label, so yep, he's rich.

If you can find a Johnny Shredfreak that's my wholehearted suggestion. They're basically Diago Powerstations (I read somewhere that they actually are the Diagos just without the badge, but that's not confirmed) but they cost £12 new. Unfortunately the Johnny Shredfreak site has an intermittent supply of them, you could try eBay or the classifieds here. The shredfreak puts out 1.5A with no problems at all, it will go to 3A but you're liable to get hum. The pitchblack doesn't draw 600mA, my DD-20 is basically a mini-computer with an LCD display and that only draws 200mA. 1.5A will power 50 average pedals easily.
Why anyone would want that as their first dance song is beyond me!
I went to a wedding where the first dance was Cowboys from Hell.....

My favourite trick, if you're playing in a drop tuning, and have a big long ringing open low note, make it into a three octave chord (play the open, then 5th fret on the next string, open on the next and 7'th on the last). Your heaviness quotient has just increased by a factor of 40. Also depending on how loud it is one or more speaker cones may have blown. We all make sacrifices.

The current paltry 10-pedal board: I sold my Groove Regulator because I wasn't using it, now it looks like I'm starting a band where a filter would be very useful. D'oh. I don't wanna get one I've had before though, so I'm thinking of importing a xenograph.

I saw a band of 14 yeard olds do song 2 at a BOtBs 5 years ago, it was better than that.

Not for enjoying themselves (that's a little cynical even for me) but I used to be in a weird instrumental band, there were no other bands like us around so we never fit in on any bills, so no one really got what we were doing. Plus most of the time the audiences were mostly the other bands and their friends After a while we stopped trying to get people to like us and we got quite dour. We usually ended with the traditional "We are Tangent, and you are a f***ing terrible audience. Good night."

Wounded paw does a range of blenders, they do a simple 4 channel mixer in stompbox format up to really complicated parrallel loopers with phase options and all sorts.

A teeny-tiny band from royal canadia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OLZsbmg16w It's an amazing EP in it's own right, but for a first release from a young band it's astonishing. I really look forward to their future releases. -

Tool, what's happened to them
bobbass4k replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Lateralus and 10,000 days both took 5 years so they'll only be a year late, I think they're writing/recording it now so it's probably aimed for a 2012 release. Knowing them it'll probably be themed around the Mesoamerican apocalypse. It's coming, be patient.
