    I am selling my much-loved Fretless Warwick Thumb BO 4 string. Body and neck - Ovangkol Fretboard - Tigerstripe ebony German made in 2006 34" scale length All original and in good condition Weight - 4.5 kgs (according to my luggage scales Comes with - Warwick gig big, in good condition, all the gubbins and case candy that came with it when new, loads of Warwick wax Has schaller straplocks, but will supply original Warwick straplocks Has Warwick EMP (coated strings) on it, but will also include some not-very-used flats, if you want to try them out. Great bass, but doesn't get used any more as I'm gravitating from fretless/active to passive/fretted/shortscale (more conducive to bedroom noodling)... so I'm hoping for a good home for this one. It would be ideal if prospective buyers came round to my house and gave it a proper twang... then handed over a bunch of twenties and took it away. Good eggs will get fresh coffee... ugly geezers will get cheap kak. Otherwise I'm happy to courier it for an extra £20. Meeting up somewhere is not a great option for me. I don't have any Basschat feedback, but I can provide prospective buyers with my Ebay name... so you can do an advanced search on other stuff I've sold over the years. Have I covered everything? Dunno... you'll have to ask questions if I've missed anything. Now to see if I can download the pesky pictures....     Played a wedding in a marquee in the middle of a torrential rain storm once. Although there were duck boards down in the marquee the boards in our corner started to sink into a very large puddle... probably due to the combined weight of our gear. I was playing sax into a mic on a stand, so I wasn't directly touching anything electrical. The concensus was that we just carried on. Them were the days.

[/quote] I would say that the bass player serves both the rhythmic and harmonic content of the song. It's a good thing if the guitarist and the rest of the band can hear both.

    I tried that spread thing once (with Mark Bass gear, as it happened) and didn't notice any particular advantage. There's probably a good reason why stacking is the conventional wisdom. In theory, bass frequencies are less directional (I think) so it shouldn't make much difference... as long as the speakers are in the same plane to eliminate phases issues. Thinking about it, even if you were coming through an enormous PA, the speakers would be in front of you, so it would still be a backline/monitoring issue. I think your guitarist needs to be a bit more savvy when it comes to ensemble playing.

    What the hell is going on with that guy's bass? Monster pedal abuse, I think... maybe a looper or two. He's playing basslines, chords and lead guitar on the higher frets.... and singing too. His strings were twanging like elastic bands... don't know if they were really loose or he was hitting them really hard. The drummer was awesome... which helped. I was looking out for a couple of guys with guitars around the back... didn't spot any.

    I would think, reasonably, a 5 string NT Thumb, maybe £1500. Maybe he'll get a pal to pretend to buy it so he can say I told you so. Anyway, he's messin' with the combined might of the basschatters here... never seen everyone agree on something before. ... and who the hell is Bass Jesus? Can I get one of his albums?

[/quote] Not a lot to add to this. I settled down to watch the whole thing, even though a lot of it was not my style. Hugely impressed really. The bass in the "house band" was excellent. Liam right at the end... worth waiting for.

[/quote] I've never played sax all the way through a song, in fact it was a shock when I started playing bass and found I had to play all the time in every song (except "All Right Now") heh! heh! At the other extreme, you feel a bit of a knob if you have to shake a percussion thingy all the way through a song... and a waste of a perfectly good sax. It's all down to song choice... some Stones and Floyd can be very saxy... or you can try a bold new arrangement of something well known, but the punters might not like it.

    Couldn't believe it the first time it happened to me... is this guy really trying to talk to me while I'm playing? Luckily blanking people is my secret superpower.... I don't even realise I'm doing it most of the time. I remember someone engaging the vocalist while he was trying to sing once. He told us later that the conversation was something like..."you're a f*****g pretty boy aren't you... I'm going to throw you off this stage and jump all over you..." etc etc... insert extra effing and jeffing as required. There's always Pete Townsend's response to Abi Hoffman at Woodstock... although I think Mr Townsend now denies it ever happened.

    I played sax in various bands for years. Can't fit it into classic rock IMO. I've played mostly in function bands and soul bands (as part of a section), some jazz funk (great fun) and in a Springsteen tribute band (Clarence has big boots to fill). Other scenarios which are possible and I'd like to try are George Thorogood style rock n roll and ska. But some of the more obvious pub band fare.... no... unless the sax player is very handy with a tambourine. I actually took up playing bass to get more local gigs playing the... erm... classics. To answer your question, if I heard of a local band playing the likes of Lizzie and AC/DC with a sax player.... I think I'd give it a miss. Good luck anyway...

    I was fine with my MB 121 combo. I even sold a 15" extension cab as I never used it. But I was usually DI'd through a chuffing big PA.

    With regard to bum notes, bad tuning, bad fretless intonation, they say that you are the first to notice... if it's a bit worse your bandmates notice... and if it's really bad the punters notice. It was apparent to you because you're a bass player yourself. I think the punters mostly listen to the vocalist... if they're listening at all (depends on the venue, I think).

    Another vote for the Roland Microcube. Couldn't be better for bedroom practice/noodling... but depends on whether you have any other requirements.
