I don't know how these scrotes' minds work (or if they have minds at all) but I wonder if you make the outside of the shed too secure it might advertise that there's something in there worth nicking.

Deaf School in the mid 70s. Renowned for having a stunning live show. When I saw them the live show was... stunning. Half gig, half theatre. Racing Cars also in mid 70s... but a bit later than above. Great thread... may even get some ideas here. Just on the drawing board at the moment, but I fancy a Nate Mendel... without the road worn appearance. Thinking of getting a MIM candy apple red P bass, swapping out a black scratchplate for the original white and putting on a new bridge... probably a Babicz rather than a Badass. I'd see how I got on with the stock pups, but I might consider something vintage (like 62s) rather than a quarter pounder. ... erm... not really like a Nate then but you get the idea. In reality, it would be very like the MIA P bass that I should have kept ten years ago.

Never seen a double sharp or double flat as a key, although I have seen it in music where it aids the playing of the music (or at least it does for woodwind).

Not ultra low... med/high action with 45-100 strings. Been playing mostly fretless (plenty of other threads on that one) to suit my arthriticky hands... but getting back into fretted... just set up my 2008ish MIA Jazz and it plays beautifully. Also thinking about short to medium scale... seeing that I'm now a bedroom noodler (oo-er) why make things difficult (although I have happily gigged with short scale before, so not having a go at short-scalers). PS, tend to play softly.

Never had any problems with scallers, even swapped out the Warwick locks on my Warwick basses.

Actually, there's loads, and they all achieve perfection in their own way for different reasons. If you're pedantic, that may offend your definition of perfection.

I must say to the 59 year olds that you do wake up on the morning of your 60th birthday feeling like the wisdom of the ancients has descended upon you overnight. You just wait and see... Don't give up on finding a band, one of my very best opportunities came out of the blue (that is THE blue... not to be confused with Milwaukee Blue). I'd just come back from holiday... a dreary week on me tod... and I got a phone call. I'd put an advert on the beat board of a local music shop (very quaint) and it had been mouldering there for the best part of two years before it was spotted. It turned out that the guitarist was being stalked by his on/off girlfriend... the girlfriend used to drag along her friend as cover... and that friend is now the current Mrs Trueno. It was a really good band as well.

I found that using the Mark bass velcro thing between extension cab and combo angled it up too much (although it was a 15" cab). So I made my own. I took a paint roller refill... or any circular tube type thing would do. I covered it in black cloth, then put two rings of velcro around it... the toothed bit so that it grips the carpet covering on the cabs. There was some leeway for adjustment as long as it's still stable. I found it angled the top combo just right for me and cost bugger all.

I'd be impressed if one of them said: "We all learn our parts BEFORE rehearsals... we don't use rehearsals for the drummer to catch up on his practise... or for the keyboardist to try out the settings on the new Korg he just bought that afternoon. We don't stop for a break every ten minutes and then spend half an hour smoking and indulging in idle chit chat." And while we're at it: "We won't lie to you about the number of gigs we do." All of those have been killers for me in the past. Number 1 sounds ok, subject to the above. I've always been paid waaayyyy more for corporate do's and functions than pub gigs... although I do like pub gigs as well. Number 2 may be protesting overmuch with the weird egos and drugs... so I agree with the alarm bells. I was once in an originals band... the main guy was very talented but would get "overstressed" and disappear on two week benders... even his wife didn't know where he was. Number 3... always fancied a country band, as long as I got to wear a fancy hat. Rather a lot of peple round here who would turn out for something like that. Worth investigating.

My last band played classic rock, I just turned up to the audition with the fretless and away I went... no comments, no complaints. Unless you play it to emphasise the fretlessness (depending on the type of music) I don't see that it makes any difference.

Yep... been waiting for this. I'm not panicking, though, as long as they don't use it as an excuse to jack up the prices (as if). I wondered if they might use heat-treated maple. Could use wenge, like Warwick, but I don't know how expensive it us. Don't know much about pao ferro. Having once had a phenolic Status neck I'd settle for that any day of the week. Funnily enough I currently have one bass with a maple board and one with an ebony board... don't have any rosewood.

You'll spend most of the recording session sitting around bored out of your crust while they are "mixing down"... I think that's the expression. Then the vocalist will want to re-do his bits, and add his own harmonies... then maybe add some of his expert tambourine playing. You'll probably get the bass parts down in twenty minutes, then you'll have to decide if it's undiplomatic to say, "do you mind if I nip off home now... I urgently need to watch some paint drying". This is why I always regarded myself as a 100% live player... and I absolutely hate recording studios... they are the most boring places in the world. In short... you don't have anything to worry about... it's a bit like a trip to the dentist, when it's over you've got all those lovely gigs to concentrate on.

I've only been affected by change of management. Great local muso pub, always a big home crowd. New manager just wants to do meals and b&b. Shame. Went there for a meal once... it was crap.

If you want a Mac a bit cheaper and you don't want it to be portable, consider a Mac Mini. You can get a compatible monitor, 26", very cheap (as opposed to Mac's own) and a keyboard for next to nothing. Or (as noted above) you can pick up really good deals second hand.

You might want to try the Warwick bass forum. I know you don't have a Warwick.... The question used to come up occasionally as the forum base was spread all over the world, Australia, South America, etc etc. There may be members on there with more direct experience of this. Good luck.

Great OP. Thinking about a p myself. "Definitely" want an F on the headstock and hate relics... but I wouldn't rule out a Sandberg like that or something similar. I'd have to draw the line at 5 string, though... strictly 4 strings here. Lovely bass.

Personally, I'd be quite happy with that as long as it was new/NOS. It would be preferable (for me) to have that rather than shelling out hundreds more for a new pro model... with the weird high frets. On the other hand, if you wake up at 3 in the morning fretting about it, I'd see if you can get your money back. Edit... sorry about the "fretting" comment, it was unintentional.
