1. If you don't want to buy expensive isotonic drinks, make your own. 50/50 fresh orange juice and water with a pinch of salt.
2. For standing around on hard floors you could try gel insoles.... either more expensive named brand ones or cheapies.
3. The only bass I actually hated was a Yamaha BEX4. Looked lovely when I bought it, but after one long rehearsal it felt like my left arm was going to drop off... just didn't work. I currently "hate" my MIA jazz... because it's not a P. I think it needs a P sibling, then I'm sure they'll both get along fine.
4.
A few years ago I would have said the same thing. These days, however, I'm happy to veg in front of the TV to the exclusion of pretty much everything else. I feel a lot better in myself too since I stopped forcing myself to do stuff just for the sake of doing something.
I agree. Sometimes I can't even be arsed to put the tv on... depends how far away the remote is.
5. Putting my fretless bass up for sale soon... now (thanks to this thread) a Mustang is back on the lust list. Got to go on holiday first... so we'll see how me fancy takes me when I get back.
6. Sounds like they will be reverting to a duo. Can't believe they manage to keep a supply of replacement bassists and drummers tbh. Better off out of it.
7.
One of the most versatile and amazing sounding basses you can buy!
Absolutely true. Amazingly versatile. On the other hand... for gigging... I always had everything on full... marvellous!
8. Totally agree. I'm 61, gigged for years... playing sax and bass. Doesn't seem like it, but it must be ten years since I quit my last band and I have no intention of joining another. I have a guitar playing chum who is really good, thought about playing some stuff with him, but what he really wants is a drinking partner... play for half an hour then "lets go to the pub". I feel quite happy I've ticked that one off, as you say.
9. Some excellent mods... this is a real player's bass. I used to have a fretless Status neck on a p bass, played beautifully, dead stable and looked as cool as you like... another one I should have kept. GLWTS
10. I'm sure B&Q do large tool boxes on wheels, made of abs plastic. Worth having a quick look at B&Q or similar.
11. I wish someone would buy this... its very presence is torturing me, but I just can't get another bass at the moment. GLWTS
12. I had a MIJ version... wish I'd never sold it and even thinking about getting one of the latest ones. I'm 6'2" and never had any issues with the size (or the tone). Used to use it for long rehearsals and also alternated with my p bass for gigs.
13. Never use them on mine. Set everything flat and get a killer sound via my EBS pre-amp. I bought a Markbass as I needed a lightweight combo due to arthritis... more lightweight choices nowadays, but I have no regrets about the set up, other than it looks a bit silly perched between two Marshall half stacks. However, I recommend you have a good old twiddle and let your ears decide. On the positive side, they enable you to get a ball park tone very quickly (vintage or scooped).
14.
Playing (and reading music on) fretless is no harder than playing on double bass/cello/viola/violin/trombone/french horn etc, but obviously a step harder than fretted bass. So its worthwhile taking a logical approach to it, for example take a leaf out of double bassists study material and read up on what "1st position" and "2nd position" is, then find some music which is graded to only use (eg) 1st position, then slightly more difficult, then the half positions etc. Break it up too, approach "shifting" as a separate skill to learn. If you perceive yourself as slipping in intonation as a piece goes on, how are you determining this? If you're playing along with others then its simply down to listening to both yourself and the others while playing. If its based on seeing your hand move up and up, then don't be afraid to add tape to the neck, or dots, or whatever to help with getting a solid and consistently accurate hand/finger position.
Excellent advice this!
15. I got a fretless Status neck for my p bass, put lightweight hipshot tuners on it and it worked really well. I still had the original neck to put back on... although not the sort of thing you'd do mid gig. I eventually sold the neck and the p bass... how stupid was that. For the record, I now have irrational p GAS.
16.
Good shout. I don't have a music stand, I just use my desk. Its going to be worth getting one. The hours will come. It's difficult to fit them in sometimes but that's life for you!
Get a proper music stand. I spent years with one of those nasty collapsable ones that keep trapping your fingers when you try to adjust it. About two years ago I bought a proper heavy duty one... money well spent.
17.
Therein lies the difficulty, I do like all of them.
If you don't need the money, then keep them. You can always sell them in the future. Review it all in a year's time. I've sold quite few basses, but there were three (a Precision, a Mustang and a Zoot bass) that I definitely regret selling.
18. As with most things, when you experience it done badly, you realise how good it is when it's done well.
19. I used to have a black $$ and noticed that areas of wear would look "polished"... most notably where I rested my thumb above the front pickup. But the polished area you show is a bit weird... I'm guessing the previous owner may have rested his hand there and used a pick. If it is just polish/wear I wouldn't worry about it... it's just roadworn and mojo'd. Other people may have better answers, but if not you may want to try the Warwick forum.
20.
Ahh butt is it the fault of the trousers for having no arse or the wearer?
I see what you did there... Alas, flat-arse syndrome is very common in my family... a bit like having a "two pack" on the wrong side of your body.
21. Onwards and upwards I'd say. Sell the DB, buy yourself a great electric bass and get stuck in to something new and challenging. You can always buy another DB (as mentioned above). Post some pics if the bass you buy, and best of luck with the change in direction.
22. If they did a relic'd version I'd buy one like a shot.
23. I assume from the fact that you've been overwhelmed by replies that no-one else has a clue either. Seems to me like "not rock solid". I made an assumption it was to do with timing, but you mention articulation, which may be a better bet. I'll make a bit of a guess and say that: as this is an instruction meant to aid your interpretation of this piece of music, then do just that. Bear it in mind and go along with it, depending on the piece of music itself, until it sounds good to you.
24. Another vote for the Comfort Strapp. Always used one.
