Try a car boot sale, especially if you're prepared to let it go at knock down prices or virtually give it away. You'd be amazed at how eagerly some guys hoover all this stuff up... and you might be surprised when you count your money up at the end of the day. If you can find a specialist electronics fair... even better.

I used to be a mighty gigging machine... I bestrode the world like a Colossus. Now even bedroom warrior-ing is beyond me. I haven't played for years, but I am thinking of waxing up my Warwick soon (so to speak). I can't seriously gig again due to the oft-mentioned health reasons... I'll spare you the details... and I must say I don't miss it at all. Personally, I do find it difficult playing the bass when I'm not in a band, so I do spend my time playing the flute now... and I apologise for the huge amount of musical theory I've absorbed in so doing. I hope I got through all of that without resorting to internet cliches or making any startling grammatical errors (although I do realise that I've omitted the accent on the e). It's an interesting thread with its twists and turns.

I would quite like an Am std, sunburst with maple neck to complement my Jazz. But I'm secretly lusting after a Nate Mendel.

First song should be a rip-snorter, but also something that all the band can play with confidence.... it's not the time to be trying out your wonderful new interpretation of "Sympathy for the Devil".

I shall use the opportunity of this thread to discharge some bile for therapeutic effect (sorry if that's prompted an unpleasant visual image). Any attempt at any form of creativity was met with: at best, "don't bother me know"; at worst, "you should stop that bloody rubbish and get out and play some football". My elder brother (Trueno Major) has always twiddled with guitar and did encourage me in all kinds of ways. I have spent a lot of time since my mid-twenties playing different instruments, learning to read music, and picking up a lot of musical theory... I suppose there was no-one to discourage me then. As some others have intimated here, family is no big deal for me... may sound weird to some, but that's the way it is.

I hate black Fenders... unless they have a black scratchplate, which transforms them into things of beauty. Maple board is the icing on the cake. Lovely pair of basses.

Fender Jazz, window of Frank Hessey's, circa 1967. I now have the modern equivalent of that bass (bought about 2008) and it's a thing of beauty.

I've always used roundwounds on fretless. Currently have Warwick EMPs on my Thumb BO. Never worried about chewing up the board. Always had ebony boards. Does leave a few marks but after a while the marks don't get any worse. Tried flatwounds, halfrounds and tapewounds... but never liked the sound. The bass is there to be played... so go for it.

I was still playing with my action man and making airfix kits. I could also say I was watching Thunderbirds, but I'm still doing that thanks to the wonders of dvd. On the musical front, it was around then I first heard the Beatles "I am the Walrus". Even then I suspected that things would never be the same again.

Good list of questions. I just plunged in head first (when I was playing sax) and went straight from amateur to heavy gigging band almost instantly. Still great fun though... and I would ask those questions now. I won't be joining another band, but now I would ask about gear-hauling and tearing down. My main requirement, post-gig is to tear down and bog off home asap. My very last band would want to sit around drinking beer and luxuriating in the fans' attention... sometimes even coming back the next day to clear up the gear. Not for me.

Pete Townsend was not above booting Abi Hoffman off stage at Woodstock... if the story is true. I remember doing a corporate Christmas do at Chester race course, a few years ago now. The stage was more of a flat area at the top of some steps. They kept swarming up the steps with their arms outstretched... just like the zombie apocalypse. Scarey!

My bony arthriticky claws will only go one way... which is pretty much flat. I usually play fretless because I find frets tend to get in the way.
