1.
Don't act guilty at customs. ☺
Good luck with that one! Not one of my strong points.
2. Well, everyone has different tastes... but I just love that type of music, could listen to it all day long.
3. The inevitable BC question... what does it weigh?
4. Funnily enough... now I've quit gigging. I've even been thinking of joining a choir just to... erm... get my performing rocks off (so to speak)
5. The live voice arrangement is a great (but not always practical) idea, and it won't sound the same as 256 overdubs... which is interesting. Yes, it does make sense. Hands up... My own hang up is a generational thing. I remember being totally outraged when that newfangled "sampling" business started. I regarded it as a type of cheating (and still do). I was in in an originals electronica band once and we had all kinds of arguments about that... I thought we might as well play one massive backing tape and mime to it. My apologies to the OP... got rather off the point.
6. I've had push-pulls before, on my zootbass, for example. They work and have a satisfying clunky feel to them. The S1 didn't feel as sturdy and didn't work on my first p bass when I got it home... put me off them for good... I could see it packing up when one day out of guarantee. But... didn't do anything for me on the P anyway, but I am warming to the idea on my J, if I ever need to mess about with the electronics. If I'd kept the P I would have swapped it out, I think.
7. Seem to remember the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion had no bassist, but maybe a baritone guitar.
8. I'd be interested to try it on my Jazz, but it would have to be on a mini toggle.
9.
Ah, we're getting somewhere then. I'll try and make myself clearer - Brexit and all the uncertainty about it caused a fall in the pound's value. This fall is insufficient (by a factor of two or three) to account for the entirety of a 30% price hike. Therefore, although Brexit is partly the problem, it's also being used as an excuse to profiteer.
A good summary IMO
10. Just curious... not seen any mention of these, or featured on the basses for sale (not the ones I've seen, anyway) I bought a Precision... about 12 years ago. It had an S1 switch and I hated it. I never used the extra sound from pressing the button, but what I really hated was the switch itself. If it had been a simple pull up switch or a mini toggle it would be ok, but my first one didn't work so I got the bass changed. At the time I think that if you wanted a brand new MIA Fender you had to get one with the switch... so I got it. On the J bass I think it was a series switch... supposed to make it sound more like a P. Maybe that worked a bit better. Just wondering if anyone had a happy time with this switch and thought/thinks it's great... or anyone had it taken out. A switch that makes your P bass sound "not like a P bass"? If I'm missing the point let me know.
11.
Now I like the Feelgoods, but.... SERIOUSLY???? guitar thrashers versus kitchen sink.
My comment wasn't meant SERIOUSLY!!!!
12. I expected to see/hear some sort of creative re-imagining of the song, bearing in mind they had four voices and instruments in a live situation. Barclay James Harvest did summat like that with "Medicine Man".
13. I saw them live in the mid 70s and I was really looking forward to how they were going to deal with it. Well, they just had a backing tape and played over the top of it. One of my first big disillusionments in life (musically speaking). Went off them mightily after that. Luckily I also saw Dr Feelgood around the same time... none of that sort of nonsense with them.
14. I know that there are probably different ways of approaching this... but for myself, I'd tell them to **** off.
15. Really looking forward to some excellent Zon photos...
16. One of my basses has "never been gigged", the other one is "elegantly mojo'd".
17.
I am very unlikely ever to own a Lakland (ugly oval bridge), MM Bongo or modern single cut bass.
That more or less defines my own ugly quotient.
18. Looks matter to me. But... My view on what looks good can change quite a lot. I never used to like the look of Warwick basses, but ended up a complete Warwickhead... but they definitely look better in the flesh than in a photo.
19. I'm no expert, but I understand that messing with valves can be rather injurious to your health, even when unplugged from the mains sometimes. I'd take it to a pro.
20. If I didn't live so far away I'd be tempted to come out of retirement for that one. Best of luck to you and the dude who gets the gig.
21. That is a beautiful bass... for all kinds of reasons. I am mint-green with envy.
22.
It's a bit more difficult when you're going for a post-apocalyptic style vibe but we're probably going to buy as close as we can and then alter them
Pair of scissors, needle and thread, scraps of leather, material, cogs, padlocks, chains... the world's yer lobster. I wouldn't recommend playing the fireman's ball when you're sporting thr full "leather 'n' chains" look, though... got the **** taken out of us good and proper.
23. My Warwick Thumb lasts for ages without a battery change, but I still wouldn't leave it plugged in if not actually playing it... having a mute pedal my EBS Microbass helps a lot to elimate thumps. The Thumb has active pickups and electronics, so once it goes it completely dies. The Warwick $$ I used to have had passive pickups, so had the ability to switch to full passive mid gig. Never came to that though, I was far too paranoid and would put new batteries in regularly.
