As I've said I dont't like the jazz fusion he played but I love the classic sound of the fretless bass and for that he must take much of the credit
-
Once I got past 40 I thought I'd try and 'mature' my music tastes by learning to appreciate classical and jazz. So I got hold of a job lot of CDs, started tuning into Classic FM and Jazz FM and see where it took me. For a while I stuck with it even making myself sit through some turgid Mahler symphony and going to some events at Cheltenham Jazz Festival. However, try hard as I did I just can't get into either. I quite like a fewer shorter pieces of CM usually 'obvious' popular tunes like Barber's Adagio and Satie's Gymnopedies, and some jazz influenced stuff like Saint Germain and Down To The Bone but that's it. Just wondering if others here have got to a certain age and thought that praps they'd give CM and jazz a go but have not really taken to either.

More Beatles more Beatles more Beatles
Barking Spiders replied to roceci's topic in General Discussion
The bands I named were more or less knocking around at the same time as The Beatles during their heyday before Led Zep, Black Sabbath etc starting making inroads. Viz the theory chat chat going on here I'm all for knowing about time signatures, chord patterns and keys but beyond that as i dont earn a crust from playing music I'd rather get a few score tunes I like under me belt than spend loads of time studiously learning about the finer details of music theory. Fine for the pros here and there but for amateurs who like to gig now and again for fun it's a bit of a waste of time ..IMO -
Another excuse for unfettered consumerism. Why do Brits slavishly like to copy every fad that comes out of the US? Anyway, it's no secret that sales events are a scam whereby retailers hike up prices in preceding weeks and then 'slash' them back to their original levels, get rid of obsolete or unpopular lines and buy in shoddy toot specifically for them. After all, despite all the saccharine marketing cow poop about the customer being # 1 blah blah the question everyone should be asking is what's in it for the retailers?

When you look at who else knocking around in the 60s you should be able to appreciate why The Beatles have been so lauded. There's was loads of dire twee pop in the vein of Herman's Hermits, Freddie & The Dreamers , hand me down white boy blues like The Stones and loads of other now obscure dross you can hear on Sounds of the 60s on R2 of a Saturday morn. -
Self Awareness and the ability to play
Barking Spiders replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Playing bass and other instruments is just one of half a dozen things I like to do when I'm not working . As long as I can nail a few dozen classic basslines that can get me gigs in a band that'll do. Way back when I was a callow youth, used to have crises of confidence when I saw better players than me but now I'm careering towards 50 I couldn't give a monkey's left tit how I compare to others. -
For me by far the most important thing is a band's ability to be able to make a connection with the crowd and to get them so buzzing it all ends up being a big party. I could never play the type of music that is for seated audiences that listen attentively and clap at the end of songs. So I guess it's a big win for passion.

Apart from some jazz funk and Django Reinhardt I detest jazz in all its forms., especially jazz rock/jazz fusion However, I acknowledge Jaco as one of the truly great players of his instrument as I do John Coltrane and Gene Krupa. Because there are so many technically great bassists in the jazz fusion genre I 've tried to overcome my utter dislike of the music but I can't get beyond about 30 seconds whether it's Weather Report, Return to Forever, Tribal Tech whoever. I get a tad irritated when people suggest I should give such and such time to sink in then I'll appreciate it. B*llocks sez I. I don't like noodly , widdly instrumental music of any sort whether classical, jazz, rock, electronica...

ya never know simes, he might get some business here! You gonna use it for gigging? You'd certainly draw attention away from the singer or lead guitarist

Excellent and inspiring. Being pretty eco minded anyway I like that it's made from scrap. 'Nice one 'to your mate
-
Same for jazz and classical. I guess whoever programmes Wagner for classical gigs overlooks the fact he was a notorious anti-semite. For myself even if someone is a bit of a run of the mill douchebag I can't listen to their music without prejudice so I'd rather be ignorant about the people behind the music I like.

How very dare they!! And as for that Bono! Using his fame to raise awareness of human rights and other worthwhile causes! Outrageous! And also using his fame to help invest Lithuanian in shopping malls to avoid tax...allegedly!!! And also using his fame for investing in Lithuani -
20 Greatest British Rock Bands
Barking Spiders replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
True greatness surely = originality+ talent+ influence+ big sales+ werldwide fame+long lasting legacy. Based on this The Beatles score on all counts as do a few others. Others may disagree but then again words like 'great', 'classic' , 'legend' , 'genius' and 'hero' have been badly debased through overuse -
20 Greatest British Rock Bands
Barking Spiders replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
While I've no issue with the term 'rock' used for the 20 bands here, I don't know what the basis is for this sh1te list but most of the bands in it don't qualify either on the basis of sales, long lasting popularity or significance/influence. The likes of The Kinks, Blur, Stone Roses, Super Furry Animals, T Rex, Roxy Music and The Jam are barely known outside the UK and even within Britain their sales are pretty modest, and probably unfamiliar to most people under30. I can't abide Radiohead but I guess they should be among the top 10 while both The Who and Queen (also non faves) are probably top 5. -
Once we have tunes up to gig standard I don't listen to them again. Most tunes suffer from a bit of creep and if I listen to the originals I start to notice things that we have naturally arranged slightly differently to suit our line up. Plus there's so much music out there, why would I listen to the tunes I play several times a month? I don't think I even listened to recordings of originals bands I've played in. Thinking about it, I'm not really an active listener of music. I tend to listen to all my music in the car rather than in a darkened room. In fact I'm not even a very active TV watcher, most of the time I'm on the internet with the TV in the background. Think I need to go on a meditation course...
+1 here. my in-car CD player has a higher spec than my one at home. Yep, I'm an old fashioned f@rt who still prefers CDs to streaming, vinyl, MP3s. BTW does anyone now ever just plug in and sit through a whole album while doing nowt else?

20 Greatest British Rock Bands
Barking Spiders replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
The only band I like here are The Smiths and a positive dislike for most of the rest clouds my objectivity. I much prefer US rock bands even though I'm not American. I'm no fan but am surprised Maiden and Judas Priest aren't in this list considering their sales, influence and longevity. But why the Stone Roses? Just two albums proper with the second being widely panned and largely irrelevant outside the UK -
Does the music you play in your bands differ from what you like listening to for fun? When I used to be in bands I'd rarely ever listen to the tunes we covered for fun. I enjoyed playing them on stage but not listening to for pleasure. These days I mostly listen to electronica but there's not much bass guitar there so it's a bit difficult finding bands who wanna cover Orbital, 808 State etc

How many BassChatters have never ever gigged?
Barking Spiders replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I wish I could be in a decent gigging band again. I'm in my late 40s and three times divorced but it's harder finding that band than it has been finding myself another good woman. And that's no exaggeration, having spent 6 months on dating websites till I met my current partner. I moved to Gloucestershire in early 2000's and in Cheltenham there used to be many good venues but with so many former pubs now Costa Coffee , housing etc and what with more and more people preferring to stay in and stare at screens opportunities for gigs are thin on the ground -
I've a Cort B4FL which I'm very happy with and am thinking of getting a fretted model. Excellent VFM. I've now taken quite a fancy to the looks of 3 in the GB series; 74JJ, 74JH and 54JJ. Anyone got one of these and are happy with it?

Hysteria..a bass album, seriously
Barking Spiders replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
My post was about your 'Def Leppard's synthetic, sterile mush that is Hysteria' comment. I dont feel this way about it, so therefore we have different opinions...which is good. Personally i find Vic Wootten, Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller as boring as hell to listen to, not my type of music at all, so again, we have other opinions. You cant please all the people all of the time so its not worth loosing sleep over.
Ah but if you re-red my last post you'll see that like you I absolutely have no interest in the music of Wootten, Miller and other noted bass virtuosos. -
Just goes to show we all have different opinions, and no matter what the Bass chat collective thinks, there are people out there that dare to like other things.
It's not about whether people like this album or not. It was in the article as a'classic bass album', but the basslines on it are pretty functional to my ears. Functional is absolutely fine and I've no problem with that if it serves the song. I'd never plump for owt by Vic Wootten, Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller etc as a fave bass album as their music doesn't interest me. I'm more likely to choose albums where the bass is distinctive and drives the songs along not where there are flashy licks e.g. Sulk by The Associates, Lexicon of Love by ABC, Black & White by The Stranglers, No Rest for The Wicked by New Model Amy, Songs In The Key Of Life, So by Peter Gabriel, Graceland and What's Goin' On. -
Great gear you've moved on and wished you hadn't?

Not a bass but I did sell a white American Tele two about half a dozen years ago, which I now deeply regret. -
Saw Von Hertzen Brothers last night, great show. Exactly the sort of thing Jools should have on to pep things up while they are in the country. Never happen of course.
I was once pleasantly surprised to see Mastodon and Underworld some time within the last few years though not on the same show. These aren't the usual sort of band Later shows however
-
My main beef with Later is they always play it safe, with the same old tired , identikit indie guitar bands, sensitive folky strummers and beardy Americana geezers. All very tame and inoffensive. Just wish they'd book some acts with a bit of balls that could tear the place down like some bonkers metal band, a hip hop combo with a bad attitude or cutting edge electronica. There's quite a lot around to choose from.
