  1. Got no time for their 20th century albums thanks to the vocals and poncey lyrics but then I heard this tune and thought, why couldn't they've have done stuff like this before? Less oblique word salads and ..gasp...GL singing perfectly ok! No need for all that witchy caterwauling. Basswise I usually prefer some swing in the playing as you get with funk but as far as rock bassists go IMO his style is better than most in the genre esp Steve Harris. To my ears his galloping style with that clanky tone is like nails scraping down a blackboard.
  2. Hah hah knowing how you feel about Coldplay that is some condemnation! But I agree. I've seen some vids of Scott's fave players and to a man they're pretty much all jazz fusion types who spend most of their time widdling above the 12th fret. The only thing worse (by a head) are 80s 'neo-classical' guitar shredders
  3. Just been driving home with this belting out of the in-car stereo. The ultimate pedal to the metal song IMO. Never ever tire of this tune...
  4. While electronica is my musical bread and butter I do enjoy a fair bit of acoustic folk and bluegrass. Never heard of these guys till here but I've checked more of their stuff on YT. Really good. Their vids are getting really strong viewing figures. The above one has 370 million views over 6 years which most big name pop and rap acts would be envious of.
  5. I was at school in the 80s and we still had geog teachers that looked somewhat like him.
  6. She had a phenomenal voice and as an individual she stood out from the crowd. I didn't always agree with her politics but at least she had a genuine conviction and commitment to her causes unlike so many phoneys in showbiz. Very sad her losing her boy at such a young age. I guess she felt she couldn't carry on anymore without him. A bad week what with Trevor Francis and George Alagiah also gone. More good people going before their time🙁
  7. I prefer Godley and Creme's duo stuff as they seemed to have the more interesting experimental ideas than the other two geezers. 'Under your thumb' and 'Cry' are a cracking pair of singles. Kevin Godley was the best singer in 10cc IMO
  8. In the drive to work I've been playing my mix CD of classic rave/techno tunes from the late 80s/early 90s...Shamen, S'Express, KLF, Italian house and this gem from Liverpool duo Bassheads
  9. Right now it's the Kruder & Dorfmeister remix of the slightly sinister but great A Mother by The Herbaliser
  10. When Gypie Mayo took over from Wilko I thought they got even better and they had their biggest hit with him
  11. I like to transpose a lot of dance music low ends usually done or a synth or a software program onto the bass guitar. So while looking on YT for some ideas I came across this. Sandstorm by Darude is a long time fave trance tune of mine so I was interested to see what Charles Berthoud would do with/to it. Now, there's no doubting the guy's monster talent and I like his channel. However, for my money this doesn't work. The double thumbing is fine but IMO should be an octave lower. Problem is when he throws in tapping and starts jazzing around. Whaddya think?
  12. being listening to a fair bit of William Orbit including his Bassomatic days. Here's a little beaut that appears on a fair few downtempo/chill out comps
  13. Flip that 180 degrees and that's where I am. Not so much intolerant but happily oblivious about as I never listen to music radio or go to gigs unless the band is a big fave of mine. The only time I'm exposed to stuff outside my comfort zone is on Rick Beato's YT show.
  14. I'd probably join a band my mrs, kids and mates wouldn't bother to go and see. I could then get away with being shyte. Saying that, IMO it's better to be in no band than in one whose music you don't give a monkeys left t1t about. In my younger days I did play in bands whose music I wasn't that fussed about just to be in a band but I never stayed long.
  15. Do you mean a tune where bass is the only instrument, is bass led (e.g. Stanley Clarke) or which a bass solo in it? The first two do little for me and am not much of a fan of the 3rd except for the short solo at 2.21. Louis J shows how to do it just right. Now OTT showboating here.
  16. Not seen any mention of the hugely underrated Sugar here till now. Much prefer them to Husker Du. Copper Blue is great but I prefer the Beaster EP. What are you listening to? Currently have the new release by The Black Dog, The Grey Album, which is great. Recommended to those who fancy a bit of Warp type electronica
  17. Only came across this recently yet it's been out for 10 years but it's the most interesting new bit of music I've heard in aeons
  18. ..ok then here's another 15 and so.....Generation Sex (Billy Idol and Steve Jones both 67, Tony James 70, Paul Cook 66), Johnny Marr 59, Glen Matlock 66, Rick Astley 57, Steve Hillage 71, Robert Fripp 77 & Toyah 65, Steve Earle 68, Richard Thompson 74, Billy Bragg 65, Paul Carrack 72, Glen Tilbrook 65, Neville Staple 68, the Damned mid-late 60s I'm guessing. Didn't know they were even still going. And there were loads more guys from the electronica scene in their 50s. I'm not saying it's wrong for these older musicians to be there. I'm just surprised at how many bands from my youth and toddler years are still active. I don't buy music mags or read Pitchfork etc and nor do I listen to music on the radio so have no idea what's going on in the music world. I only listen to my CDs.
  19. Is this the most senior citizen Glasto ever? Candi Staton 83, Debbie Harry 77, Sparks 77 & 74, EJ 76, Cat Stevens 74, Chrissie Hynde 71, Neil Barnes of Leftfield 63 or 62, Axl Rose 61, Fatboy Slim, Duff McKagen and Barrington Levy all 59, Slash 57, Dave Grohl 54. Take heart, BC posse. there's plenty of time yet to get booked 😁. BTW I'm a slip of a lad of a mere 52 summers
  20. On my boat kicking back to Music Has The Right To Children (That be Boards of Canada to the uninitiated) featuring
  21. Learned how to read music and all that jazz (well not jazz per se) while studying clarinet and alto sax between 11 and 16, years of age that is.. not o'clock. Then it all went t1tz up when I discovered gurls. Picked up guitar, drums and bass, initially thinking they might help me get to 4th base. Didn't happen but still kept up with them. The phrase 'self-taught' is a bit high-falutin in my case. More a case of fumbling my way up and down fretboards over the years.
  22. Judging from the full line up it looks like nearly every band in Britain is playing there this year. Is yours?
  23. In this glorious weather I generally prefer listening to summery, laid back, beach vibes such as ...
  24. I don't know either but she's pretty fit
